Lot 3

Ce collier/diadème illustre les nouveaux bijoux en vogue en platine, plus légers, qui ont remplacé les montures en or et en argent, plus lourdes.DIAMOND NECKLACE, CIRCA 1910Designed as a stylised lace collar, the openwork foliate scrolls millegrain-set throughout with old brilliant and single-cut diamonds, suspending a diamond tassel with pierced navette-shaped drop with scalloped edges, graduating to the back as a single row old brilliant-cut diamonds, French assay marks for platinum, maker's marks, length 35.50 mm, weight 55.11 grams. The Belle Époque was a golden age of relative peace and prosperity in the West, lasting from the late 19th century to the outbreak of the First World War in 1914. During this period, the highest echelons of society were required to fulfil a number of important social engagements throughout the year and they were conducted on a grand, lavish and opulent scale. Protocol dictated the wearing of certain jewels and accessories for formal events. In particular, the tiara was a symbol of rank, worn by European royalty and the nobility at all court and state occasions. It would later become an essential item in every aristocratic lady's wardrobe, for wear at private dinners, balls and the opera. The tiara also served as a symbol of betrothal. Society brides would receive a tiara (or two) as a wedding gift to wear during the ceremony and see her through a lifetime of social obligations that she would be expected to honour as a married lady. During this era, transformable tiaras gave their owners the opportunity to invest in one jewel that could convert to other pieces, thus providing a range of adornments for any occasion. A tiara after all, was an expensive investment. Conceived at the height of the Belle Époque era, this necklace converts to a tiara via a detachable backchain. Over the years, it has become separated from its frame, but the screw fittings remain in situ throughout the reverse. The graduations of scrolls or plumes with foliate motifs and millegrain detail imitate the fine fabrics and fashions of the period and simulate a delicate lace collar when worn as a necklace. This could only have been achieved with the revolutionary use of platinum. A metal that is as light as it is strong, jewellers only began to understand how to truly exploit platinum from around 1900. This necklace / tiara exemplifies the vogue for new lighter platinum jewels that replaced the heavier gold and silver settings preceding them. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
