Lot 350

by Joseph Gloster, Birmingham 1905, featuring a scene in repoussé of Salisbury cathedral with a horse and cart in the foreground and a border of foliate decoration, monogrammed cartouche bottom left, with hinged cover, verso the same scene, 1.9ozt (Dimensions: w: 6.50cm d: 9.50cm)(w: 6.50cm d: 9.50cm)Footnote: Other notes: Along with the famous silversmith, Nathanial Mills, Joseph Gloster contributed to the popularity of the so-called 'castle-top' silver visiting card cases engraved with British landmarks and sold as souvenirs to tourists. He was a prolific Birmingham box maker at the time. These cases appealed to a public fascinated by novelty and became - and still are - highly collectable. Most castle top silver is made by die stamping (pushing the metal out from behind, using a stamp). Some scenes are quite common, such as Windsor Castle - however, the rarer the scene, the more valuable the item. The record for a castle top card case stands at £9,800, which was for a very rare example of The Post Office, Dublin.

Lot 603

the top section, originally probably a shallow dish or plate, with full London hallmarks for 1854, the panelled and fluted rim each engraved with alternate scroll and foliate decoration to a vacant field, the panelled base, with full London hallmarks for 1855, engraved to match, with fluted rim, signed to the underside of the plate, 22.6ozt (Dimensions: h: 9cm w: 26cm)(h: 9cm w: 26cm)Footnote: Other notes: Current UK hallmarking regulations allows (with some minor exceptions) for only one complete hallmark to be applied to an item. The fact that both the base and the top bear complete sets of hallmarks indicates that the item is constructed from two separate items and was not originally designed to be a tazza. It is interesting though, to note that both pieces have been made by the same maker and the dates are just one year apart. In Victorian times, the date letter at the London assay office was changed on 29th May, and not 1st January which is the case today, so articles submitted at the beginning and at the end of the same calendar year would have two different date letters. It is very possible that this is the case in this example with both pieces probably being assayed in the same calendar year. It is likely that both pieces were originally part of the same larger dinner service. (Reviewed and passed for sale by the Goldsmiths' Company Assay Office)

The first item is particularly curious; we have been unable to trace anything similar. We can only speculate what it was used for; perhaps holding accoutrements of a gentleman's dress (collar studs etc.), for storing dice, or maybe for holding sugared almonds or similar comfits. Whatever its ostensible use, its true purpose is clearly to amuse and titilate. The second item might appeal to anyone involved in the sale or management of property: "I have a little heart to let,/Depicted just above,/The fixtures are unvarying truth,/The Rent is - Constant Love...".
