In 1538, the incumbent abbot, Clement Lichfield resigned after alienating some of the abbey's property, and Hawford appointed in his place. Hawford was seen as Cromwell's man and did much to help in the dissolution of the abbey, partly in the hope that part of it may be preserved as a college for youth, but to no avail. The abbey was finally suppressed on the 30 January 1540.
