Memorabilia - Beatles Related - A Smiths Mechanical Timer from Abbey Road Studio No 2. This example was used in Studio 2 in the 1960s and 1970s and still has the strip of paper glued to the face which bears faded red writing 'NO. 2 STUDIO'. As many Beatles recordings were made in Studio 2 during this time it is highly likely to have been used by George Martin during those recordings and therefore a lovely piece of Beatles & Abbey Road history. Provenance: From the private collection of Andy Clark who was a member of the band BeBop Deluxe who recorded in Studio 2 in 1976. The item was gifted to Andy by Abbey Road Assistant Sound Engineer & Tape Operator Haydn Bendall as it was now obsolete and destined for the skip.

It was shown in the north room of the New Gallery at 121 Regent Street, London, as item number 169. The Studio magazine reviewed the exhibition, where they commended the 'quiet unostentation of the chimney piece proper and the iron grate it houses' At least two other examples of this fireplace are known to have been made. One was supplied in 1895 to the 3rd marquess of Bute's House of Falkland, Fife, Scotland for Lady Margaret's sitting room where it remains today. It differs only by being dated quite visibly on the right-hand panel. Another example (with Carrara marble) was used by the Scottish architect James Miller (1860-1947) in the Royal reception rooms of the Glasgow International Exhibition of 1901. It was possibly then relocated for use in a bedroom at Coupar Grange in Perthshire, also designed by Miller (completed 1902) as it can again be seen there in a photograph of circa 1904.

A New Military Map of Portugal..., Drawn by Captn. Eliot, Rl. Artillery, 1810, engraved map with contemporary outline colouring, sectionalised and laid on linen, some dust soiling and staining, 630 x 395 mm, contained in a contemporary card slipcase with a printed label to the upper cover, worn at extremitiesQTY: (4)NOTE:The first described item is a large and detailed folding map, published during the Peninsular War. Probably because of the war, Nantiat is most exercised with the borders between Spain and Portugal, especially the passes through which it was expected that Napoleon's army might come when the campaign season started in the spring. It is probable that Faden saw an opportunity to sell this detailed and large-scale map to officers in Wellington's army in Portugal, with the idea that it could be used as a reference for the campaign. In July of 1810 - six months after the publication of the map - the French military commander, Marshal Masséna led an army of 65,000 troops into Portugal, pushing on towards Lisbon, but was held back by the Lines of Torres Vedras a set of earthworks that had been built on the orders of Wellington. The campaign - significant for the emergence of large-scale guerrilla warfare - was eventually won by the British under the command of Lt. Gen. Sir Arthur Wellesley, later the 1st Duke of Wellington. It could be argued that the French defeat was sealed when Napoleon set out with a massive army on what proved to be the disastrous French invasion of Russia. This seriously depleted the French forces with the result that a combined allied army under Wellesley pushed into Spain, defeating the French at Salamanca and taking Madrid. In the following year, Wellington scored a decisive victory over King Joseph Bonaparte's army in the Battle of Vitoria. Pursued by the armies of Britain, Spain and Portugal, Marshal Jean-de-Dieu Soult, no longer able to get sufficient support from a depleted France, led the exhausted and demoralized French forces in a fighting withdrawal across the Pyrenees during the winter of 1813/1814. France, Napoleon and its European dominance would finally fall the following year at the battle of Waterloo.

Taylor to front free endpaper, a little spotting, a few scattered marginal and underscoring marks in blue pencil, original blind-stamped light brown cloth, slightly rubbed and soiled, spine a little darkened, 8voQTY: (1)NOTE:George Jacob Holyoake (1817-1906) was an English freethinker, co-operator and newspaper editor. Holyoake founded The Reasoner which ran from 1846 until 1861 and out of which came a new movement which in 1851 he called secularism. His acquaintances included John Stuart Mill, George Henry Lewes, Francis Newman and Harriet Martineau. Ellen (Eveline) Lallah Holyoake (1841-1919) was his second daughter who married Edward Praill.Holyoake was one of the first parliamentary candidates to give a prominent position to the woman question in his manifesto. He urged women like Harriet Martineau to start a woman-movement, even suggesting the title of a paper (Women's Journal) that was adopted later. A nice association item between Mill and Holyake for one of the most important treatments of women's rights in the nineteenth century.

A unusually large William and Mary walnut, fruitwood and stained ivory inlaid cushion framed mirrorLate 17th century, the crest possibly laterWith pierced cresting, above a bevelled mirror plate, enclosed by a profusely inlaid frame of birds and flowers, 92cm wide x 5.5cm deep x 137cm high, (36in wide x 2in deep x 53 1/2in high)Footnotes:It is possible that many of the late 17th century items in the sale were purchases and commissions for Thomas, first Earl Coningsby at Hampton Court Castle. In the 1690s, Coningsby remodelled Hampton Court at the same time that King William and Queen Mary were building the new wing, designed by Wren, at Hampton Court Palace. The changes turned Coningsby's inward-looking, defensible medieval manor house into a regional palace, looking out over its estate, with far-reaching views. Suites of rooms enfilade along the south front included one for the King (in red silk damask) and another for the Queen (in blue) including elaborate beds possibly by the King's maker Daniel Marot. Coningsby's King's bed is today on display at William and Mary's palace Het Loo, in the Netherlands; one of the chairs made for the same room is today, appropriately, in the King's apartments at Hampton Court Palace. With thanks to Catherine Beale for her historical guidance. The item within this lot containing ivory has been registered in accordance with the Ivory Act (Section 10).
