Roman cockerel oil lamp circa 2nd century AD. Here we have a red slip pottery oil lamp decorated with a moulded figure of a cockerel on the tondo. The base is stamped with the makers mark. This item shows extensive damage and repair to the lower part of the nozzle. However, an oil lamp of this age which is signed on the base by the maker as well as a clear depiction of a cockerel. Also from a very interesting old collection with a very good Irish clan provenance. Ex. Collection: Baroness Ethel Inchiquin, wife of Sir Lucius Inchiquin, Prince of Thomond and chief of the O'Brian clan, Dromoland Castle, Ireland. Acquired in the late 19th early 20th century. Ancient Assyrian Terracotta Votive Figure of a Man circa 1200 BC. Belonging to the Assyrian period this bearded male is dressed in a long robe which is tied at the waist. On his head he wears a jester like cap with long platted hair. In fact it is likely he represents a musician or dancer. Both arms are broken off in antiquity as part of the ritual votive offering. The Assyrian empire was centred amidst modern day Iran with this artefact being discovered in southern Persia. A rare and very interesting item. Ex. Private collection: Michael Green, Devon 100mm x 65mm.
This is of a very unusual and rare form in the shape of gloved hand thought to be that of a falconer. Most likely would have been fitted as a dagger pommel to that of a falconer by trade. Falconry was one of the sports of kings. The item is well constructed with good detailed markings, and separation between the fingers and thumb. There is a slight depression to the bronze at the bottom of the front side, and a small lug can be seen on the inside of the hand. The item has a good dark green/brown patina and measures 60mm in length. Found in Norfolk England. Comes complete with an acrylic stand for display purposes. Private collection: Michael Green, Devon. 62mm.

Jeremy Thorpe's original press statement; a rare piece of British history. A photocopied typed statement, which reads; ' STATEMENT BY: The Rt. Hon. Jeremy Thorpe - I have always maintained that I was innocent of the charge brought against me. The verdict of the Jury, after a prolonged and careful investigation by them, I regards as totally fair, just and a complete vindication.....' The statement goes on to further detailed his thanks for his wife and family, and his wishes to momentarily retire from the public eye immediately after his trial. The statement is dated 22nd June 1979, and signed in biro by Thorpe ' With much appreciation ' to the lower corner. The 33cm x 22cm document with various folds. Provenance: The vendor's husband was head of Police security during the trial, and immediately after being read to the awaiting press, Thorpe handed this statement to the officer who kept it (and presumably had it signed later) as a souvenir. This is a photocopy of the typed statement, but is the actual one handled by Thorpe on the day (its presumed that several copies were made for distribution to the press etc). A rare item. John Jeremy Thorpe (29 April 1929 – 4 December 2014) was a British politician who served as Member of Parliament for North Devon from 1959 to 1979, and as leader of the Liberal Party between 1967 and 1976. In May 1979 he was tried at the Old Bailey on charges of conspiracy and incitement to murder, arising from an earlier relationship with Norman Scott, a former model. Thorpe was acquitted on all charges, but the case, and the furore surrounding it, ended his political career.
An incredibly rare and personal uncensored handwritten letter written by a John ''Jack' McDonald ( 213815 No.663 Company, ASC) whilst serving in the Army Service Corps in the Salonika campaign, in the Sturma valley. Also included are several photographs of McDonald and personal effects. The letter goes into great detail as to the condition of the troops and conditions during the campaign. The letter is frank and open, and very often deals with McDonald's fears and feelings, and the rumours circulating amongst the troops. The letter, covering some 16 lined sheets from his Army notebook, and his full history can be read here: https://www.maybole.org/community/citizens/pastandpresent/mcdonald/index.htm Along with the letter, several photographs and personal effects are also included. These items comprise: - a real photographic postcard of McDonald in full uniform - a ' We'll meet again' postcard which reads: ' Dear Meg, I do not know yet when we are going, however, when we leave here I shall post this card so that when you get it you will know I have sailed. Best love, Jack . T.4/213815 No. 663 Coy ASC, Horse Transport, Aug. 1916 ' - another postcard showing a group of Nurses sent home to Meg which reads ' How would you like to be in this group? I hope you are keeping well, Jack .' - several original photographs of McDonald during service, including one of him riding a cow. - a real photographic postcard of McDonald standing infront of a Turkish Mosque with a message to the verso which reads 'This was taken in front of a Turkish mosque which escaped the fire. You can see some of the fire ruins still lying about, best love, Jack' - a wealth of ephemera from McDonald's school days at Dumfries Academy, including his leaving photograph, various class report cards, merit certificate, his educational certificates, an entire folder of school reports and related materials. The final item within the lot is a taxidermy snake which was brought back from his service, with a label which reads ' Snake!! brought back from WWI by my Grandfather John Mcdonald .' A truly incredibly and historically important collection of items. (John McDonald was born at Lochfoot, Dumfries, Scotland. He served in the first World War with the Army Service Corps from 1914 to 1919)

AN IMPRESSIVE GEORGE II PORRINGER WITH COVER KER & DEMPSTER, EDINBURGH 1755 of traditional form, two loop handles, demi-fluted body, with similarly decorated lid and finial of knopped form, later Breadalbane marked to base and cover 22cm high with lid, 36.28oz The rarity of such a piece is due to a combination of two defining aspects; that of craftsmanship and that of provenance. The word Porringer is derived from the French 'potager', a vessel for stew, and porringers were common throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, but one of this scale of Scottish manufacture rare if not unique. The presence of the cover also enables us to view this item in its entirety to imagine the way it was utilised in the mid 18th century. While many porringers would originally had covers most are now lost or perhaps were not supplied with them in the first instance. The craftsmen Ker & Dempster are synonymous with Edinburgh silversmith's finest wares. After an apprenticeship with James Ker 1739-1742 William Dempster, married Ker's daughter and set up Ker & Dempster which lasted until William Dempster's death. James Ker himself had many connections with landed families in the borders of Scotland with his Mother related to the Earls of Haddington. A member of parliament for Edinburgh 1747-54. The unmistakeable 'Breadalbane' in script struck incuse confirms without doubt that this originates from one of the earliest and arguably most important collections of Scottish silver. That of Gavin 1st Marquess and 7th Earl of Breadalbane. His collection, while now dispersed, is perhaps the best known of the period, not by its contents alone, nor auction catalogue as testament, but by the virtually unique applied collector's mark he used on pieces within the collection. Breadlabane was among the earliest scholars of Scottish silver and helped in the discovery and attribution of many makers and town marks. Many of these marks and his attributions (some now considered erroneous) formed the main reference for the Scottish sections in Sir Charles Jacksons' first (and later) editions of English Goldsmiths and Their Marks in 1905. Gavin Campbell was born in 1851 and succeeded his father John, 6th Earl in 1871. The succession of his father in 1867 had not been a simple one as he was not descended from the main Breadalbane line and was a cadet branch, the Campbells of Glenfalloch. When considering the importance the family had in Scotland and the lands they held, in excess of 450,000 acres from Perthshire to the Atlantic Ocean, this five-year dispute set legal history. Educated at St Andrews he succeeded his father as 7th Earl of Breadalbane, Earl of Holland; Viscount of Tay and Paintland; Lord Glenorchy, Benederaloch, Ormelie and Weik; and Baronet of Nova Scotia. He was created Baron Breadalbane in 1873; and Earl of Ormelie and 1st Marquis of Breadalbane in 1885. He married in 1872, Lady Alma Imogen Carlotta Leonore Graham, the youngest daughter of the 4th Duke of Montrose. A favourite of Victorian society he held many important roles within the country, notably Lord-inWaiting to the Queen, Treasurer to the Royal Household 1880 - 1885, Privy Councillor 1880, Lord Steward of the Household 1892 - 1895, Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland 1883 - 1885, A.D.C. to King Edward VII, Keeper of the Privy Seal of Scotland, 1907, Brigadier-General of the Royal Company of Archers - the Royal Body Guard for Scotland, Colonel of the Highland Cyclists Battalion; Colonel of the 5th Volunteer Battalion Royal Highlanders, Chairman of the St. Andrew's Ambulance Association, Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Argyllshire, from 1914 and Member of the Fisheries Board. In 1893 he was created a Knight of the Garter and was also a Knight of Justice of the Order of St. John and a Knight of the Swedish Order of the Seraphim. His collection was dispersed after his death in various auctions, nay of the most important items now reside in institutional collections. This would appear to be the largest piece which is still in private hands and available to collectors. Provenance: 'Catalogue of the major portion of the choice collection of antique silver, formed by the late Most Hon. Gavin, Marquess of Breadalbane, K.G., P.C., now the property and sold by instructions of the Right Hon. the Earl of Breadalbane, M.C.' Dowell's Ltd, Edinburgh 30th and 31st May 1935, lot 360
THE HOPETOUN SALTS - A SET OF FOUR MID EIGHTEENTH CENTURY SALTS JAMES KER, EDINBURGH 1745 The slight bellied bodies with corded rim and with engraved monogrammed cipher and coronet above, raised on three stepped and hoof feet, the interiors gilded and with later liners (4) 7.3cm across, 12.8oz Provenance: Commissioned by John Hope, 2nd Earl of Hopetoun The monogram and coronet engraved to these salts is recorded on a fine Montieth by James Ker, hallmarked 1746, which likely formed part of this original commission which included these salts, see 'Silver; Made in Scotland' NMS 2008, item 4.37, illustrated page 80. Also Georgina Lee, British Monteiths p 106, item 310 The Hopetoun family for two generations, Charles and John Hope 1st and 2nd Earls, were perhaps the most important commissioners of silver in Scotland. Their influence on the Edinburgh trade appears to have not only given many valuable and important commissions but raised the challenge of the goldsmiths to new heights to create truly fashionable and important items. As with all family commissions the success of the family closely compares to the need for silver, the expansion of Hopetoun House and its formal rooms necessitated the purchase of new and fashionable silver from Edinburgh's finest makers. Although now, in parts, dispersed through auctions in 1953 and 1977, the collection of silver held within the house was vast and it epitomises the status that silver brought to families and the much discussed idea of wealth held in silver and reflected their status. No doubt much was re worked and melted over the decades into new fashionable wares but a number of key pieces are still extant. Important silver bearing this provenance can be seen within institutional collections, including a unique pair of wall sconces and a fine five-piece tea service both made in Edinburgh which form part of a wider collection of Hopetoun silver within the National Museum of Scotland collection (see Silver; Made in Scotland, NMS 2008 for illustration of these and other items) and a monumental wine cooler and cistern made in London by William Lukin, housed within the Victoria & Albert Museum. The importance having a client such as the Hope family cannot be over stated and the status this must have given the Goldsmiths would surely have impacted on their wider business. In the small world of 18th century Goldsmiths of Edinburgh it is interesting to note the choice of Hope to follow a 'family' of makers and support it for decades. This is seen with some of the earliest pieces by James Penman, perhaps the most influential maker of his time, who trained both Harry Bethune and Thomas Ker, who in turn trains James Ker and continuing with successful training and partnership of James Ker and William Dempster. All these makers are closely connected with the Hopetoun story and owe a great debt to this relationship over 50 years.
