Papers from the archive of Nathaniel Bacon of Stiffkey, Norfolk, 1546-1622. Manuscript containing separate examinations of Henry Hopkins, Edmund Nicholson, Stephen Nicholls and Edward Warde. On 3 sides 4to paper, small portion of paper missing from spine fold. They are entitled that they are, 'Taken before Rice Gwyne Esq the xxvi th of May in the ffyth yere of the Raigne of our Soveraigne Lord King James [1607]'. These examinations seem to be Constable reports from which Nathaniel Bacon prepared the related item see No.31 (page 88) in 'Elizabethan Handwriting 1500-1650' by Giles E. Dawson & Laetitia Kennedy-Skipton. This manuscript is signed 4 times by Gwynne at the foot of each examination. The text here is considerably more detailed than in Bacon's printed text, interestingly recorded here Hopkins states he went to the house of Thomas Applegate where he tooke a pipe of Tobacco.Nathaniel Bacon (?1546-1622), was the second son of Lord Keeper Sir Nicholas Bacon and his first wife Jane, daughter of Thomas Fernely, a Suffolk merchant. Nathaniel Bacon took up residence at Stiffkey Hall with his wife Anne (daughter of Sir Thomas Gresham and Mistress Dutton) in 1578, just two years after building commenced. Through his family Nathaniel close conections with leading figures at Court, especially through his father, Lord Keeper to Elizabeth I, and his father in law Sir Thomas Gresham, who was the Queen's principal financial agent. In 1574, he was appointed a J.P. in Norfolk, an office he held for almost 50 years and which he discharged assiduously. A zealous puritan in religion, he was dedicated to establsighing the puritan ethic in North Norfolk, and through his methodical and meticulous writings amassed a superbly rich archive which reveals politics and religion in action. The Stiffkey archive and other collections, which, together, contain the papers of Nicholas Bacon and his five sons, have provided a unique glimpse into the extended relationships of an important sixteenth-century family. The collection as a whole has long been recognised as one of the main sources for our knowledge of local administration in the late-Tudor and early-Stuart periods. They illuminate the activities of an important county gentleman within a variety of overlapping and interacting communities, ranging from his household and parish to the national scene. (A. Hassell Smith et al: 'The Papers of Nathaniel Bacon of Stiffkey, NRS vol 46', 1979) Provenance: collected by Percy Milligan (died 1969), for over 30 years editor of the Norfolk Record Society; then purchased by Rosalind Brewer, historian and trader/collector of rare books, manuscripts & documents, of Winfarthing and later Eye; then by descent

Anti-Slavery: a creamware cylindrical tankard printed in black with a scene of a cudgelling (stick fighting) match between two Negros together with attendant figures within a border of exotic fruits, plants, a snake, an umbrella and centred by a figure wearing a fleur-de-lys crown, circa 1790, 145mm, the body cracked but away from the print* The scene depicted is a copy of the engraving by A. Brunias entitled ‘A Cudgelling Match between English and French Negros in the Island of Dominica’, published February 1779. See slaveryimages.org item number 1024. The Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade held its inaugural meeting on 22nd May 1787 and adopted, two months later, as a seal, an oval depiction of a chained slave entitled ‘Am I not a man and a brother’.Similar medallions widely produced by Josiah Wedgwood became quite probably the first piece of anti-slavery memorabilia.See Victoria & Albert Museum number WE.7825-2014.This mug, drawing its inspiration from the engraving published some eight years earlier must also rank amongst the earliest of memorabilia produced to widen the understanding of and create support for anti-slavery. Agostino Brunias was born in Italy in 1730 and came to England in 1758. A painter, he became acquainted with and subsequently personal artist to William Young who had been appointed to a government post in the West Indian territories. Following the end of the Seven Years War in 1763 Dominica was acquired by Britain from France. Brunias arrived in the islands in 1765 where he remained until about 1775 when he returned to England and where, in the late 1770s, he exhibited some of his paintings and also visited Europe. Returning to the West Indies in 1784 there he remained until his death on the island of Dominica in 1796. Although Brunias primarily resided in Dominica he also spent time in St. Vincent, and visited other islands, including Barbados, Grenada, St. Kitts, and Tobago. His romanticized and idyllic painting of West Indian scenes and slave life is regarded today as some of the most informative imagery to be found.# commemorative, commemorate, slavery, anti-slavery
1966 Vespa 180 Super Sport - Genuine un-restored classic scooter- Registration GFX 335D- Frame number VSC1TSRU3435 - Engine number VSC1M0019899.Successor to the 160 GS, the Vespa 180 Super Sport brought a new style (and ccs) to the GS foundation. The 180 SS had a 4-Speed, grip-shift, constant mesh transmission making it a perfect urban pocket rocket. This sixties icon was sold in smaller numbers compared to the GS and is often referenced as the Top Dog when compared between the two and only came in three different colours; white, blue and red. The 180s look was very distinctive with its clamshell speedometer and CM trapezoidal headlight being the centre piece to its beauty. Most of the front end in fact differs from previous 180s and rally editions - offering a unique but clean style to the viewer. Its owner Bill Drake, renowned Vespa Guru within the scene has kept the bike in dry storage for several years along with some of the parts and bikes within the auction. According to our specialist consultant, Bill built this scooter from new old Piaggio stock from his collection. The chassis designation SRU is reference to the fact that it is a Douglas factory exchange item. Dealers (completely legally) during the 1960s exchanged chassis when damaged for replacements in factory painted colours. Bill registered the built-up machine in 2011 for use on the road and covered 1024km before retiring it in 2014. The 180 SS continues to be extremely desirable within the scooter community, this retro classic will complement any collection and offers an exciting collectable which continues to rise in price.
