LALIQUE: PLIQUE-À-JOUR ENAMEL, PEARL AND IVORY BROOCH, CIRCA 1900-1903The ivory plaque carved in high relief to depict the heads of three female profiles, the gold quatrefoil frame of sinuous stems with aubergine enamel, issuing green plique-à-jour ivy leaves, within ivy leaf relief, engraved to the reverse, mounted in gold, signed Lalique, pearls untested, two leaves with enamel loss, length 6.8cmFootnotes:René Lalique's relationship with sculpture was deeply intertwined with his mastery of glass and ornamentation. His designs often featured sculptural forms, blending fluid, organic shapes, echoing the artistic depth of sculpture, exploring themes of nature, mythology, and human emotion. In the mid-1890s Lalique began working with Sarah Bernhardt, an actress and sculptor, whose flamboyant personality acted as a catalyst on Lalique's fertile imagination. Whilst she is recognised as an enthusiastic and loyal benefactor of Lalique, she has not been credited in her capacity as a sculptress, in which she undoubtedly advised him.In the late 1890s, Lalique designed a series of jewellery and objets d'art inspired by the sculpture of Auguste Rodin. Lalique's sensitivity to form allowed him to translate Rodin's bold, emotive works into delicate glass and ivory examples, retaining the essence of the sculptural forms while introducing his own innovative techniques. One notable example of their creative collaboration was Lalique's interpretation of Rodin's famous sensual sculpture The Kiss (1882); which he reimagined more than once and in various forms. See Becker, V. The Jewellery of René Lalique, pl. 28-30.In this exquisite jewel, Lalique uses the smoothness of ivory, with its subtle translucency and notable resemblance to marble, to evoke softness and sensuality of skin, thus demonstrating Lalique's skill as a craftsman and his ability to evoke the same emotional resonance as sculpture, albeit in a more intimate and wearable form. For similar carved ivory jewels by Lalique, see Becker, V. The Jewellery of René Lalique, pl. 20-22, 24-30, 108, 112.Accompanied by a certificate from The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, stating that this pre-1918 item is of outstandingly high artistic, cultural or historical value. Y A FINE AND RARE PORTUGUESE MACAO CARVED IVORY DEVOTIONAL PLAQUE PORTUGUESE MACAO, MID 17TH CENTURY Depicting St Jerome kneeling before Christ crucified, gripping the cross in one hand holding a stone in the other symbolic of his asceticism, his hands and feet with the stigmata- a sign of his passionate Christian devotion, his cardinal's hat and robe hanging in the tree, God the Father in the clouds above a lion at the Saint's Feet above him two medieval church towers, the scene probably based on a European engraving, modern stand plaque 12cm high, 8.5cm wide, 1cm deep Provenance: Ex Private collection of the Berkeley Family, Spetchley Park, Worcestershire, catalogued in a 1949 inventory as 'A Carved Panel (4¾' x 3½") of St Jerome Kept in the Strong Room'. In 374 A.D St Jerome became seriously ill in Antioch and two of his travelling companions died. In this state he dreamt that he appeared before God's judgement seat and was condemned for being a Ciceronian rather than a Christian. He took this experience very seriously and became a hermit in the desert of Chalcis in Syria for five years. He gave up the Classics he knew and loved and learnt Hebrew in order to study scripture. Proficient in both Greek and Hebrew, he went on to complete the enormous task of producing a standard Latin text of the Bible which he revised according to the meaning of the original texts. He then began to translate the Gospels and the Psalter and over time produced all, or nearly all, of the Bible in what became known as the 'Vulgate' version. A passionate and devoted Catholic scholar, St Jerome had a difficult temperament and a sarcastic wit, but it has been said of him that his immense learning was unmatched by any other Christian writer except St Augustine. cf: Asian Civilisations Museum Singapore for a similar Jesuit plaque depicting St Jerome painted in bright polychrome (no. 2011 - 01507) IVORY ACT 2018: A certificate for a pre-1918 item of outstandingly high artistic, cultural or historical value. Y A LARGE WALRUS 'PENIS BONE' BACULUM HAND CLUB ARCTIC/BERING STRAIT, 19TH CENTURY OR EARLIER 59cm long Provenance: Ex Private collection Literature: Finch and Co, catalogue no. 6, item no. 15, for two ancient fossil penis bone clubs In 1604 Stephen Bennett, an English sailor and adventurer, brought back to London a living young walrus he obtained in the Bear Islands. It excited much curiosity: 'The King and many honourable personages beheld it with admiration for the strangeness of the same, the like 'whereof had never before beene seene alive in England'. Two years later Bennett killed between 600 and 700 walruses on Bear Island in six hours, and in 1608 a total of 1000 in seven hours. The figures are staggering and the overall slaughter so great that the walrus was practically exterminated in the area by 1613. Once known as the sea horse, 19th century naturalists believed the walrus to be the link between mammals of the land and those of the sea. The male walrus lacks any externally visible penis, and in order to control body temperature in freezing Arctic waters, it is internal and supported by a bone called a baculum. The Bering Sea Eskimo would make use of these natural clubs when hunting to dispatch caught seal and fish.
AN OVER LIFE-SIZE ROMAN MALE PORTRAIT HEAD OF CONSTANTINE THE GREAT (C.272 - 337) EARLY 4TH CENTURY AD Wearing the 'Imperial Oak Wreath' the decorative border of his 'tunic' can still be clearly seen on the left hand side, modern stand bust 38cm high, 24.5cm wide, 25cm deep Provenance: Ex Private collection, Cambridge, England Literature: Rinaldi Tufi, S., Yorkshire. Oxford University Press, 1983; 23, no. 38, pl. 12 In AD 306, Constantine was hailed emperor in the Roman city of York; he was the first emperor to convert to Christianity. Following his campaigns in the Eastern provinces, Constantine was recalled in 305 AD to fight alongside his father in the province of Britannia. After his father's death in 306 AD, Constantine was acclaimed as 'imperator' by his army at Eboracum (York) eventually being declared victorious after the civil wars against emperors, Maxentius and Licinius to become sole ruler of the Roman Empire in 324 AD. Constantine's Christian belief cannot be underestimated, establishing the foundations of 'Western Christendom'. In 313 AD he was influential in the proclamation of the 'Edict of Milan, declaring tolerance of Christianity within the Roman Empire. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the purported site of Jesus's tomb in Jerusalem, was built on his orders, considered the holiest place in all of 'Christendom'. Y A RARE LARGE GERMAN TURNED BLONDE RHINOCEROS HORN GOBLET 17TH CENTURY Old smooth silky pale honey coloured patina 15cm high, 12.5cm diameter A passionate collector of curiosities, the Emperor Rudolf II of Prague (1552-1612) owned a collection of 13 turned rhinoceros horn drinking vessels, one of which, now in Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen, he had made himself. He believed them to be unique in having the magical ability to detect the presence of poison. Goblets and wine cups made of rhinoceros horn became extremely popular amongst the Princely courts of Renaissance Europe, not only for their powers of detection, but because rhinoceros horn was also considered to be a powerful aphrodisiac, a belief that had already been held in the Middle East and Asia for centuries. A Charles II and later oak wainscot armchair with scroll-carved cresting rail, above a pair of figural brackets depicting Charles II in a mortuary pose, flanking a central lozenge-carved panel over a planked seat and swept arms, the base with heavy baluster turned supports and cross stretchers, 62 cm wide x 53 cm deep x 117 cm overall height, 42 cm height to the seat.A private Kentish collectorPlease note:I think the chair has been restored at some point and it is unclear if the side stretchers are replacements but they have been in place a long time, the drawer pegs are a little too flush with the surface possibly pointing to reassembly or replacements, and the seat has a strip of timber that is obviously a later introduction but again from old timber.I have amended the description to include "And Later" to reflect my concerns. The chair is of the period but to what extent elements are replaced with period timber a long time ago.is unclear. The chair is structurally sound and stands as a decorative item.

Théodore Géricault, 1791 Rouen – 1824 Paris„CHEVAL GRIS BLANC“ AUCH „CHEVAL ARABE GRIS“, UM 1812/ 1814Öl auf Leinwand.59,9 x 73 cm.Anbei eine Expertise von Dr. Bruno Chenique, (ehem. Villa Medici, Rom, Getty Resarch Institute L. A., Mitlg. De l‘Union française des experts. Reims, 1. A.R.
