Francisco Clapera (Barcelona, 1746 – Mexico, 1810)"Virgin and Child"Oil on copper. Signed: "Fco. Clapera".42 x 32 cmFrancisco Clapera was a Spanish painter who, after graduating from the Royal Academy of San Fernando in Madrid in 1768, spent much of his artistic career in Mexico, where he arrived via Peru during the 1770s. He participated in the founding of the Royal Academy of San Carlos, where he also taught painting. There, under the direction of Jerónimo Antonio Gil (the first director of the Academy), Clapera introduced European artistic techniques such as Contrapposto to Mexican painting. These techniques made "his casta paintings more dynamic than those of his Mexican contemporaries," as noted by Joy Davis in her work "Eighteenth-century dress and fashion in the casta paintings of Francisco Clapera" (2015).However, in 1790, "he resigned from his position as head of painting" at the Academy, as reported by art historian Clara Bargellini, who also states that "he is known to have created the altarpiece of Our Lady of Mercy in the Sacristy of Mexico." These two quotes are taken from the publication “Dos series de pinturas de Francisco Clapera” (1994) (Two series of paintings by Francisco Clapera), in the scientific journal Anales del Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas, where Bargellini reveals "fifteen paintings of the life of the Virgin and ten half-length figures of apostles [that] are currently in the bishop's office in the building annexed to the cathedral in the city of Durango"; two series bearing Clapera's signature that were previously unknown. According to the Doctor, "despite the Neoclassicism of the language, the artist's dramatic handling of light and shadow is striking."Francisco Clapera is also known for being the author of the only complete series of caste paintings in the United States and one of the few that remain intact in the world. It is dated circa 1775, in Mexico, and consists of sixteen oils on copper, two of which are signed (inv. 2011.428.1-.16).It has been on display at the Denver Museum of Art since 1996 and, as explained in its cataloguing information, "depicts families in domestic settings engaged in private activities, providing a rare glimpse into daily life in 18th-century Mexico. Others depict occupations and serve as a document of life in colonial times. The clothing, activities, and utensils reveal the hybridisation of 18th-century Mexican culture in its blend of European, Asian, and Mexican material culture."The collection was one of the main attractions of the exhibition "ReVision: Art in the Americas," organised by the Denver Art Museum (October 2021 - July 2022) and, in partnership with that museum, exhibited again at the Minneapolis Institute of Art very recently (June - September 2023). Reference bibliography:- Bargellini, Clara. English School. Midlands. Nottingham. Gothic. Circa 1350 - 1375."Mary Magdalene"Alabaster sculpture with remnants of polychrome and gilding.Measurements without plinth: 46.5 x 14.5 x 13.5 cm.Height with plinth: 57 cm.From the mid-14th century until the iconoclastic crisis, which occurred with the Anglican Reformation in the 16th century, alabaster sculpture workshops flourished in central England, especially around Nottingham. There was a great boom in monumental and funerary sculptures, as well as in reliefs or altarpieces intended for the local market and for export.Alabaster carving, mainly extracted from the quarries of Tutbury and Chellaston near Nottingham, took on industrial proportions in England between the mid-14th and early 16th centuries. The market for altarpieces and small devotional images was very extensive. It included not only religious foundations but also bourgeois classes. Hundreds of English alabaster sculptures were exported, some as far as Iceland and Santiago de Compostela.Similar examples to this one, representing saints in sculpture rather than the more usual reliefs, include, for example, the wonderful Virgin and Child, which is part of the collection of the British Museum in London, inventory number 2016,8041.1 (https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/H_2016-8041-1) with a face very similar to that of this Mary Magdalene. As indicated in the Museum's description of the sculpture we are comparing, regarding dating: "This places the statue at the very beginning of the period when alabaster began being used as a luxury material for sculptural compositions. The raw material was quarried in Derbyshire and Staffordshire and there is sufficient evidence to suggest that many of the early workers of the stone were based in the Midlands. The condition and technical finesse of this figure represents the highest levels of English sculpture in alabaster. The early artists who worked alabaster in the Midlands attracted the attention of King Edward III who in 1363 ordered a carved alabaster altarpiece from Peter the Maceon of Nottingham. These sculptures from the King’s chapel at Windsor, along with the majority of comparable pieces in situ were destroyed during the English Reformation.."Another sculpture from the mid-14th century, The Virgin and Child, is preserved in the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, with inventory number A.140-1946. (https://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O70632/standing-virgin-and-child-statuette-unknown/)Other comparable pieces, although from the 15th century and already characteristic of Nottingham production, would be, for example: the mid-15th-century Saint Fiacre, which is part of the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, inventory number: 25.120.227. (https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/472307) or Saint Jude, which is kept in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, inventory number A.60-1946 (https://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O70146/st-jude-statuette-unknown/) Bibliography:Cheetham, Francis. On the 19th, Sizer shared in the destruction of two Hs126s and damaged another, and the following day he shared a Do17. On this patrol Sizer was attacked by five Me109s and was shot down. He landed two miles from La Panne and swam across a canal before being taken to a casualty clearing station with facial wounds after hitting his head on a gun sight. He swiftly returned to his unit two days later and was back in the air immediately.213 Squadron flew constantly over the French coast during the evacuation of Dunkirk and, on 28 May, he destroyed an Me109 whilst on the 31st he shot down another Me109 and damaged yet another. He himself was shot down south of Dunkirk and made a crash landing in Hurricane P2434.The following day Sizer attacked an He III which had started bombing the beaches at Dunkirk and sent it away with engines ablaze. Three days later his squadron was involved in a furious dog fight when German fighters were escorting a bombing formation which were preparing to bomb the evacuation convoys. Sizer attacked another Me109 and shot it down but was himself attacked from the rear. He still managed to damage another Me109, but was outnumbered and his Hurricane was hit and set alight. He crash-landed south of Dunkirk and Sizer fortunately remembered to take his parachute from the wreckage. A man on a motorcycle and side-car rescued him, but then he left his parachute in the side-car and had to go back for this precious item. He arrived in Dunkirk still clutching his parachute and started to board a destroyer but, at the last moment was told to disembark and board instead the River Clyde paddle steamer Plynlimmon. As the paddle steamer departed, the destroyer was attacked by a swarm of Stuka dive bombers which blew the ill-fated destroyer apart. When Sizer returned to 213 Squadron he found that he had been posted as “missing” from the morning flight (an emotive account written by his wife Nita in May 1940 is included with the lot).At the start of the Battle of Britain, Sizer’s squadron was based at Exeter. German squadrons were attacking southern England, and, on 11 August 1940, Sizer destroyed a Ju88 when the squadron intercepted a large raiding force over Weymouth. The following day he shot down an Me110 which was heading towards Portland. On 15 August he shot down two Stuka’s and on 5 October damaged a Ju88. He was awarded the DFC (London Gazette: 8 November 1940).Sizer was then posted to 58 OTU at Grangemouth as an instructor and after a series of other positions with 56/57 OTU, he joined 152 Squadron equipped with Spitfires in April 1942. It went to North Africa in November 1942 and on 25 November, he damaged an Italian Mc202 and three days later a Ju88.Sizer was given command of 93 Squadron at Souk-el-Khemis in Tunisia from February 1943 and flew low-level sorties until the defeat of the Axis forces in Tunis, after which he was transferred to Malta to prepare for the invasion of Sicily. On 10 July 1943, he was leading his squadron over the beaches of Southern Sicily when he damaged a Ju88; he then damaged an Me109 on the 12th and destroyed another Mc202, probably another and damaged four more Mc202s on the same day, resulting in his award to the Bar to his DFC (London Gazette: 28 September 1943).He then remained in the Middle East as a fighter instructor and subsequently commanded a photo reconnaissance squadron in the Canal Zone.Sizer left the RAF in 1946, but rejoined two years later when he resumed his role as fighter instructor. In 1953, he commanded 54 Squadron flying Meteor F.8 jet fighters and later the supersonic Hunter F.1.After spending two years in Hong Kong before returning to the Air Ministry in 1961, he retired from the service two years later with the rank of Wing Commander.Once asked if he had enjoyed his wartime experiences, Sizer replied;Absolutely, looking back we certainly enjoyed it, in fact we enjoyed it then, because we were young you know, I mean we were only 19, 20 years old, crikey you look at them now days and they’re all doing silly things aren’t they. All the lads round here are knocking things down, driving fast cars or making a nuisance of themselves which is exactly what we were doing. Yes it was good fun, there were terrible moments and sometimes very upsetting. Wilf Sizer, April 2005.
