DEVONSHIRE, Georgiana, Duchess of (1757-1806). A collection of 7 autograph letters signed ('Georgiana Devonshire', 'G. Devonshire') to the poet and biographer William Hayley (one), her banker [Jean-Frédéric] Perregaux (2) and others unidentified (probably also to Perregaux), Aix[-en-Provence], Pont Ste Maxence and n.p., [November 1792] and n.d., in English (one) and French, 13½ pages, 8vo and 4to; with a transcript of a poem, 'Fragment of an Heroic poem' annotated 'On Lady Eliz[abeth] F[oster] by the D[uche]ss of D[evonshire], Chatsworth 1789', and one other item. DEBTS AND COMPLICATIONS. The letters in French all in some way touch on Georgiana's famously involved financial affairs, worrying about payments gone astray, and trying to arrange settlements of debts to members of her circle -- in one letter, apparently written shortly after childbirth, she admits 'je crains que je serai beaucoup en votre dette ... je suis bien faible ayant ete un peu incommodée -- mais j'espere vous voir bientot et vous montrer mon fils', another begs Perregaux to be discreet about her financial affairs ('Je vous prie Monsieur de ne pas faire mention de nos arrangemens dargents &cc'), and especially not to talk about them in front of others; other topics include the organisation of a journey to Lyon for her servants and those of Lady Elizabeth Foster, and in November 1792 arrangements for returning to England 'notre malheureux necessaire'. The letter to the poet and friend of Blake, William Hayley, regrets that 'my troublesome head ach prevented my visiting [Hayley's estate at] Eartham', asking him to excuse on the same grounds her handwriting, 'my misfortune renders my eyes so very weak that I write with pain & difficulty'. CRYSTAL PALACE Scarce home Crystal Palace single sheet programme v QPR, 21/4/1917. The programme is for a London Combination game which was a League set up for London clubs during the First World War. This programme has extensive clear tape around the edges and across folds which suggest that it has previously been in four separate parts which have since been taped together. There are 3 small holes and the teams are slightly affected as Palace seem to have mislaid two full backs. The programme has to be truthfully described as poor but it is a rare item and may well be of interest to Palace and QPR collectors. As described

Ephemera – Airship Mail – The last flight of the Hindenburg scarce envelope postmarked May 1st 1937 bearing the stamp of the Hindenburg with the typed instruction that the envelope was to be flown on the Hindenburg and with further rubber stamp cancellation explaining that the letter was to be sent via the Hindenburg because of bad weather. A scarce postal history item. This is only the second such envelope we have seen in seven years. How this envelope came to be carried on the last flight of the Hindenburg is a story of fate. The envelope was addressed to a recipient in Stuttgart and at that time the German postal service was using airships extensively for domestic mail. It therefore should have been delivered via one of the domestic airships but bad weather prevented the flight. As a result a sack of mail was loaded onto the Transatlantic bound Hindenburg and then dropped by rope when the airship reached the German coast. The mail in that sack including the present lot was then distributed internally while the Hindenburg continued its flight to America. A few days later it spectacularly crashed on arrival in New York – one of the world’s most famous transport disasters.

Blunt (Wilfred) and W.T. Stearn. Captain Cook`s Fl original subscriber`s copy number 93 for Mike Walpole (subscribers` list loosely inserted) 30 plates printed from the original copper-plates original half black morocco by Zaehnsdorf cloth case folio Royal College of Art Lion and Unicorn Press 1973. ***Banks directed the preparation of the plates and had 3 sets of proofs pulled. These were used to make lithographic copies for Sir William Hooker`s Flora antarctica 1844-47. and James Britten`s IIlustrations of Australian plants collected in 1770 1900-05. Apart from the proofs the present publication is the only authentic printing of these magnificent copper plates. The full set (apart from 5 lost by the Royal College) were subsequently printed by Editions Alecto as Banks` Florilegium 35 vol. 1980-90; but the nature of the plates makes it clear that the colour printing used in this edition is historically implausible; see Bridson Printmaking 19. The only occurrence of Banks` proofs for sale seems to be William Pamplin`s closing catalogue part III Feb.1863 item 405 a volume of 28 plates lettered “Botany Bay plants by Sir Joseph Banks” pencil notes by Brown. It did not sell at a guinea and was lot 562 in J.C. Stevens` sale of the remaining stock on 13/14 Oct. 1863.
[Henderson (Claude W.)] [Some butterflies of New G manuscript title 8 leaves of thin card (265 x 420mm. ) with 23 watercolour figures unbound [Loughborough] c.1963. ***Exhibited: Natural history illustration 1485-1968...from the collection of Michael Walpole Loughborough School of Librarianship 1969 item 51 part of one sheet illustrated. This exhibition with a 16pp catalogue was the only public showing of MW`s remarkable collection (and he told me he regretted even that).
Pass (Crispin van de) Hortus floridus 5 parts in 1 vol. Latin text issue engraved title 2 other printed titles (summer & autumn) 5 frontispieces and 220 plates of flowers on 161 leaves texts on facing versos exceptions are all accounted for except for last plate of summer: cariophylus a few figures lightly coloured a nice if probably made up copy title mounted and a couple of tiny marginal defects some other margins renewed early 20th century dark green morocco gilt g.e. by Riviere bought from W&W cat.110 item 2266 for £180 in 1967 the original invoice (which lists much else) inserted oblong 8vo Arnheim Jansson 1614. ***Comprises; [spring] plate of garden with points of compass plates 1-41; Aestas printed title with Utrecht & Arnheim imprint garden plate plates 1-20; Autumnus printed title with Utrecht & Arnehim imprint engraved leaf Epigramma. Flora naturae. signed A.B. garden plate plates 1-25 + 25bis (the narcissus bulb) + Radix utriusque cyclamini (unumbered); [winter] garden plate plates 1-12 [altera pars] title “Cognoscite lilia agri” plates 1-120 all but 53 & 120 two to a leaf. Spencer Savage`s paper in The Library 1923 starts to attack the issue points of this complex work; however it can only really be applied to undisturbed copies in contemporary bindings otherwise brain fever ensues. “The most striking feature of the figures is the degree of atmosphere that has been achieved with so difficult and mechanical an instrument as the burin...In many of de Passe`s plates the plants are shown growing in the soil the artist`s eye-level being chosen so low that the flat Dutch landscape gives place to a plain sky against which the flower and leaves are firmly patterened. The book like Camerarius...thus anticipates Thornton`s Temple of Flora. Delightful touches of humour enliven de Passe`s work: bees and butterflies hover about the flowers; insects crawl among the leaves; a little mouse gnaws contentedly at an uprooted corn...” Blunt p. 109.
Redoute (Pierre Joseph) Les Liliacees 8 vol. first edition engraved portrait plain plate of Amaryllis bulb 486 plates printed in colours and finished by hand with the half-titles (except vol.2) and the rare dedication to Chaptal first state of plate 95 and both states of plate 428 (see Plesch sale lot 626) some minor offset or foxing but a very nice large copy uncut and the plate marks visible (they are usually trimmed away as in Hunt copy) half orange morocco gilt by Sangorski & Sutcliffe a printed livraison wrapper (mounted with slight loss) bound at the end of each vol. the Major Albert Pam copy (OBE 1875-1955 banker and collector) with his bookplate featuring the orchid Pamianthe sold Sotheby`s May 7th 1956 lot 83 to Sawyer for £900 (lot 84 was a Les Roses with plates in 2 states bought by Traylen for £1400) then item 394 in their catalogue (? 183) (cutting inserted; £5000) bought by MW from Traylen in 1972 for £9 500 with the original invoice inserted [Stafleu 8747 “280 copies”] folio (c.545 by 355mm.) Paris chez l`auteur 1802-16. ***When Major Pam`s books were sold the catalogue justly stated that his books were all selected copies in fine condition. He published an autobiography Adventures and Recollections in 1945 but it has only a disappointing half paragraph on his book collecting; it was perhaps one of those things that a gentleman did not discuss. The Jardin de la Malmaison and the Liliacees “constitute the highest peak of Redouté`s artistic and botanical achievment; both books are among the most important monuments of botanical illustration ever to be published...This magnificent publication brings Redouté to the top of his artistic career and amply justifys his fame as one of the most eminent botanical illustrators of all time.” - A catalogue of Redouteana exhibited at the Hunt Botanical Library 1963 p. 21.

Both movement and dial are in fine condition and clock should run and chime once set up correctly. Case is an early 19th century Scottish case and is in sound cosmetically restored condition with the only significant noticeable faults being vertical shrinkage cracks to the plinth base. The clock comes with weights, pendulum, case key and winder IMPORTANT NOTES REGARDING THE CATALOGUING OF CLOCKS Movements, dials and cases Movements and dials are described as relating to the cases in which they are housed in one of the following three ways: the case... we are of the opinion that the movement and dial started life in the current case. in a case... we are of the opinion that the movement and dial are in a case of correct period and type (and may well be original to the movement and dial), however there is evidence to suggest that they may not have started out life together. now in a case... we are of the opinion that the movement and dial are no longer in the original case or one of correct period and/or type. Pendulums, weights, winding and case keys Unless specifically indicated otherwise in the catalogue description it can be assumed that all clocks are sold with the requisite pendulum and correct number of weights (where appropriate), however we cannot guarantee that they are original to the clock. We do not indicate in the catalogue description whether winding or case keys are present with any specific clock. As many are consigned without keys please check with the department to establish whether they are present or not prior to bidding. Condition Due to the mechanical nature of clocks and the fact that most are of great age we cannot offer any guarantee as to whether they are in working order or free from major faults or restoration. Although we endeavour to catalogue items in a fair and informed manner, omission of any comments or observations regarding the condition or originality of a clock in the description does not necessarily indicate that it is free from significant faults, restoration or is in working condition. We would strongly advise any prospective purchaser to view the item in person or request a condition report and/or further images prior to bidding. Measurements Dial measurements are given in inches, other dimensions such as height are given in centimeters (and inches for English clocks). The measurement given for the height of a longcase clock excludes any removable finials in order to provide an approximate minimum ceiling height in which the clock can be accommodated.
