Roman Britain, ca. 43 to 410 CE. This is a pair of two beautiful bronze fibulas/brooches. These items were used to fasten the ubiquitous clothing item of cold, damp Roman Britain -- the cloak. Both show the particular influence of Celtic artwork on Roman British artifacts, especially the more delicate of the two which suggests an animal head in its shape. Size of largest: 2" L x 1.1" W (5.1 cm x 2.8 cm). Provenance: Ex-Estate of M. Reiniger, Chicago, IL Condition: Both have patinas; one is missing its pin; the other's hinge is frozen in place. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #111562
Britain, Holme-next-the-Sea, Norfolk, England, ca. 450 to 700 CE. This is a larger-than-average hammered iron spear point with a socket that seems to have been strengthened with additional iron in antiquity. Anglo-Saxons fought in a wedge-shaped formation with their king or leader on foot at the head of the wedge; heavy infantry, carrying spears like these, would have formed the point and the wings. Spear heads have been found either as grave goods or in votive deposits, which are often placed in rivers or other bodies of water for religious reasons that we do not fully understand today. A spear this large would probably have been a prestige item for its owner. Size: 18" L x 1.75" W (45.7 cm x 4.4 cm). Provenance: Ex-Private Young collection, Colorado Springs, CO Condition: For its age and material, this spear is in excellent condition. It has patina and rust but the shape is clear and the socket is in excellent condition. #111773
Western Europe, 15th to 16th century CE. This is a very large halberd that stands over 10 feet tall with its original wood pole! The halberd is a two-handed pole weapon consisting of an axe-head topped with a spike that became prominent in the 14th and 15th centuries and was used by various armies throughout Europe until the late 1700s. The iron head on this piece is attached to the pole by four sturdy langets. The shape of this head looks very similar to one from Sweden in the 1500s, but it could also have come from Germany or Switzerland. These weapons were cheap to make and could be used many ways in battle -- for hand to hand combat, for pulling horsemen to the ground, or for killing horses -- and famously were used to kill Charles the Bold in 1477 and, archaeologists have recently theorized, mortally wound King Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth. Size: 9" W x 105" H (22.9 cm x 266.7 cm). DUE TO LENGTH ITEM CANNOT SHIP INTERNATIONAL. Provenance: Ex-Private Young collection, Colorado Springs, CO Condition: Some cracking to the wood; some patina to the blade. #111783
Europe, 17th to 18th century CE. This is a pike, with an iron blade and a long wooden handle. The shaft is socketed, and reinforced with metal strips (langets). Pikes are one of the most basic weapons in the history of human warfare, essentially just a spear with a long pole attached that could not be wielded one-handed, and weapons of a similar style are known from the time of Alexander the Great until the 1800s. Indeed, pikes made from decommissioned bayonet blades welded to a steel tube were created to be issued to the British Home Guard in 1942, but were never introduced after public outcry at so archaic a weapon. Generally, they lost their effectiveness as muskets and other gunpowder-powered weapons became common on the battlefield. However, they also have a ceremonial role to play, and the Swiss Guard at the Vatican still sometimes carry them. This is a large, fine example with excellent detail on the blade. Size: 4.5" W x 91" H (11.4 cm x 231.1 cm). ITEM IS TOO LARGE TO SHIP INTERNATIONAL. Provenance: Ex-Private Young collection, Colorado Springs, CO Condition: The iron is in excellent shape, with very little patina; the same goes for the wooden handle. It is unclear if the wooden handle is original but it is certainly old. #111784
