Born in Glogau, Germany, to a Jewish family, his ancestors had returned with Napoleon from Russia from a town named Tykocin. He grew up in Dresden and after World War I, he traveled to Japan and immediately fell in love with the culture. In April 1927, he opened his first own gallery in Berlin. The entire family survived the Holocaust, and in the 1950s Tikotin slowly resumed his activities as a dealer in Japanese art. He became, once again, very successful and prominent, holding exhibitions all over Europe and the United States. When he first visited Israel in 1956, he decided that the major part of his collection belonged in that country. In 1960, the Tikotin Museum of Japanese Art was opened in Haifa.Condition: Shows few tears, material loss, and associated touch-ups, but still presenting well. (2)Kaihō Yushō (1533-1615) was a Japanese painter of the Azuchi–Momoyama period. He was born in Omi province to Kaiho Tsunachika, who was a vassal of Azai Nagamasa. At an early age he became a page at the Tofuku-ji in Kyoto and later a lay priest. He served there under the abbot and associated with the leading Zen priests of Kyoto. In his forties, Yusho turned to painting and became a pupil in the Kano School, either under the famous Kano Motonobu or his grandson Kano Eitoku. He then worked at Jurakudai, under the patronage of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the Emperor Go-Yozei. At first, he patterned his work after Song painter Liang Kai, producing only monochrome ink paintings, using a ‘reduced brush stroke,’ relying more on ink washes than sharp hard strokes. Later, he worked with fashionable rich colors and gold leaf. Artistically on a level with Hasegawa Tohaku and Kano Eitoku, he gave his name Kaiho to the style of painting he and his followers practiced.Kaku Shigi or Guo Ziyi (697-781) was a Tang dynasty general, known for his military conquests and progeny. He rose to fame when he led the Chinese army on several central Asian campaigns and then crushed the An Lushan rebellion of 755-63. Guo's eight sons and seven daughters produced so many grandchildren that, reportedly, he could not remember all their names. He became a symbol of longevity, wealth, and fatherhood in China and was popular with Japanese merchants of the Edo period. CAT AND BUTTERFLIES'China, 17th century. Ink, watercolor, and gouache on silk. Mounted as a hanging scroll, on a silk brocade coated paper frame with ivory handles. The charming painting depicting a crouching cat looking at a pair of butterflies, its tail appearing to dance in sync with the fluttering butterflies, beside a large blooming peony sprig. Provenance: French trade. Condition: Good condition with minor wear, some creasing and fading, tiny losses. The mounting in very good condition with usual traces of wear. Important notice: Please note that we will need to remove the ivory roller ends before shipping / handing over the item. The roller ends are not part of this offer. Dimensions: Image size 32.5 x 39.5 cm, Size incl. frame 114 x 52.3 cm Cats and butterflies are symbols of longevity. The word for cat in Chinese (mao) is a homophone for the word for octogenarian, and the word for butterfly (die) sounds the same as that for a septuagenarian. Thus, the combination of the cat and butterflies here conveys the wish that the recipient might live a long life of seventy or eighty years. Literature comparison: Compare a related silk painting of a cat, rock, and peonies in the Freer Gallery of Art, Smithsonian Institution, accession number F1909.245r.

An early Victorian hardstone inlaid Ashford black marble centre table1850-1860, in the manner of Samuel BirleyThe detachable top inlaid with a wreath of assorted flowers including forget-me-nots and jasmine, with an ogee moulded edge, on a ring turned baluster column with a lobed collar, the concave tripartite base inlaid with similar flowers, terminating in squat bun feet, approximate diameter of the top: 66cm; 76cm high approximately.Footnotes:An almost identical example to the offered lot, also described as being in the manner of Samuel Birley, sold Sotheby's, London, 2007, Important English Furniture including furniture from the Horlick Collection, lot 236. Whilst another very similar model sold Sotheby's, London, 15 September 2009, Fine English Furniture and Continental Furniture, lot 22. A further 'manner of Samuel Birley' comparable, albeit with more intricate and colourful inlay than the present one, sold Sotheby's, London, 5 March 2008, lot 115.The marble typically referred to as Ashford marble is in fact a form of limestone which comes from two quarries in Derbyshire, near Ashford-in-the-Water. When polished up, its surface builds up to a deep lustrous and glossy black and this can be clearly seen on the above table. Records indicate that Ashford marble was probably first used in the 16th century and the earliest instance of this was during the 1590s, where it was used in the production of chimney pieces for Hardwick Hall, Derbyshire. Thereafter, it appears to have been manipulated for both architectural and decorative purposes. The operations at Ashford and Derby are referred to in 'Glover's History and Gazetteer of Derbyshire' of 1829, where it is mentioned that the stone: 'is wrought into articles of domestic elegance and into monuments, chimney pieces are sold at various prices, from 30s to upwards of £60, and beautiful tables of black marble, enriched with elegant engravings, are also made there'. A further notable element is that during this period it seems that much of the marble output of these quarries was subsequently either etched or engraved. From the 1830s onwards this material became highly fashionable among the wealthy and aristocratic in Britain. Included among the patrons for Ashford marble was William Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire (d.1858), who was a major collector and connoisseur of mineral specimens, particularly indigenous ones. Cavendish commissioned craftsmen who were based close to his home at Chatsworth to execute, among other things, enormous doorways for a new wing there.W. Adam, then working at (and later to manage) John Mawe's establishment at Matlock, claimed to have revolutionised the inlaying of black marble; he published his 'Gem of the Peak' in 1838 (1st ed.), which described Florentine mosaic or pietra dure in intricate floral and geometric patterns, and he supplied a 'magnificent table... inlaid with a wreath of flowers and foliage' to Windsor Castle on behalf of Queen Victoria in 1842.The new processes, designs and practicalities which were expounded by Adam influenced a great number of local makers and workers in this stone, and this resulted in the latter quickly adopting them in their own practices. Also, as a direct consequence of this fact, new workshops were founded in Matlock, Bakewell, Buxton and Castleton which used other minerals, either likewise mined in the nearby area or otherwise imported. All of these locations rapidly became popular tourist destinations, whilst they experienced a concomitant increase in requests for souvenirs such as clock cases, candlesticks, ink stands and vases, as well as for smaller pieces of furniture. At the 1851 Great Exhibition a significant number of inlaid Ashford marble pieces and objects were displayed. Amongst them was a table made by John Tomlinson which was inlaid with: 'a wreath of flowers and leaves in their natural colours... entirely formed of the spars of Derbyshire'. This item features in the Art Journal Illustrated Catalogue of the Great Exhibition, 1851, p. 111 but also appears in J. Meyer, Great Exhibitions, London - New York - Paris - Philadelphia, 1851-1900, 2006, p. 46.Another person operating in the same oeuvre was Samuel Birley. He won three medals at the 1862 London International Exhibition, including for a table now in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum (157-1864). A further related table in the Oak Room at Chatsworth appears in The Duchess of Devonshire, Chatsworth, The House, 2002, p.108.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP For auctions held in Scotland: Lots will be moved to an offsite storage location (Constantine, Constantine House, North Caldeen Road, Coatbridge ML5 4EF, Scotland, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. LEOPARDI GIACOMO: (1798-1837) Italian poet and philosopher. An extremely rare A.L.S., Giacomo, one page, 4to, Bologna, 20th February 1826, to his father (‘Carrissimo Sig. Padre’), in Italian. Leopardi thanks his father for a gift of figs which ‘sono qui applauditissimi e graditissimi, e quantunque in casa io non fossi solito di mangiar de'fichi, adesso, non so come, trovo che sono pure una cosa di un sapore eccellente’ (Translation: ‘are highly applauded and very welcome here, and although I wasn’t used to eating figs at home, now, I don’t know how, I find that they are also something with an excellent flavour’) and adding that he has been supplied with sufficient enough to be able to share them, remarking that very little (and only bad) cheese is made around Bologna, and venturing the possibilities of selling their own cheese and produce in the area, ‘Veramente non si puo scusare l'indolenza della nostra provincia nel mettere a profitto i tanti generi squisiti che essa possiede, e che eccedono il consumo dell'interno: giacche i formaggi non sono il solo capo che manca in altre parti d'Italia, e che sarebbe ben accolto, ma noi abbiamo ancora molti e molti altri capi che da noi non si stimano e non si trovano a vendere perche soprabbondano, e altrove sarebbero ricercatissimi’ (Translation: ‘Truly, we cannot excuse the indolence of our province in making the most of the many exquisite products that it possesses, and which exceed internal consumption: since cheese are not the only item that is lacking in other parts of Italy, and which would be well received, but we still have man, many other items that are not esteemed here and cannot be found for sale because they are overabundant, and elsewhere they would be highly sought after’), further suggesting wine as another product for consideration, ‘E i nostri vini. che noi mandiamo solamente a Roma e in piccola quantita, mentre ne abbiamo tanta abbondanza, non si venderebbero qui nel Bolognese a preferenza di questi vini .......pessimi della provincia, tutti ingrati al gusto, e scomunicati generalmente da tutti i medici?’ (Translation: ‘And our wines, which we only send to Rome and in small quantities. While we have such an abundance of them, would they not be sold here in the Bolognese area in preference to these…..terrible wines from the province, all unpleasant to the taste, and generally excommunicated by all doctors?’) and commenting on the financial advantages and that landowners would have the opportunity to sell their goods at convenient prices. Leopardi concludes by referring to the weather he is experiencing, ‘Qui continuano le giornate temperate, che mi han fatto tornare in vita da una vera morte, perche le pene che ho provate in quest'inverno non sono descrivibili’ (Translation: ‘Here the temperate days continue, which brought me back to life from a true death, because the pain I have felt this winter cannot be described’) and sends tender greetings to his mother and other family members, as well as Dr. Masi and the surgeon Prosperi. With address panel to the verso, bearing the remnants of a papered seal. Autograph letters of Leopardi are extremely rare as a result of his death at the untimely age of 38 during the cholera epidemic of 1837. Some light age wear and very minor staining and a small area of paper loss to the lower left corner. About VGCount Monaldo Leopardi (1776-1847) Italian philosopher, nobleman, politician and writer, one of the main Italian intellectuals of the counter-revolution. Father of Giacomo Leopardi. The relationship between Monaldo Leopardi and his son was profound and bound by reciprocal affection, as witnessed in the present letter (Giacomo closes ‘Mi ami, mi benedica e mi creda sempre suo affettuosissimo figlio’ Translation: ‘Love me, bless me and always believe me to be your most affectionate son’) however the two also had completely opposed temperaments with an entirely different conception of life.
