Badge. Essex Rifles Militia Victorian OR’s shako plate circa 1867. A very fine and scarce blackened brass example. Large distinct coiled bugle horn. Two loops to reverse. Touch of verdigris otherwise VGC. Raised 23rd June 1759 at Colchester as the 2nd or East Essex Militia; redesignated Essex Rifles Militia in March 1853 and became 3rd Bn. Essex Regt. on 1st July 1881 at Warley. HLK noted this item ‘May 1867’. Hugh King Collection
Field Marshal Lord Methuen’s Victorian Cocked Hat A good example of the regulation pattern black silk bi-corn hat, with double gold bullion loop, purl button and gold/crimson tassels, fore and aft. Complete with 10 inch white over red feather plume. The interior with pale roan leather internal sweatband, and cream silk lining with tailor’s details of Cater & Co London. Contained in original metal storage tin, this remnants of a large paper label “Methuen”. The overall condition is good, but with some age wear, particularly to the plume feather. Remains a good exhibition item. Provenance: the Methuen Estate.
Indian Army. Presidency Volunteer Reserve Battalion Officer’s Binocular Case. A good brown leather case with ornate white metal fittings, the flap mounted with a white metal Guelphic crown above initials ‘PVRB’ in ornate script. The interior lined with yellow felt and containing a pair of binoculars with adjustable focus. Leather remains good, Binoculars with heavy age wear. (2 items) This Bengal unit bore this title 1888-1891 when it became Presidency Vol. Rifle Bn., later incorporated in the Calcutta Vol. Rifles. This item probably dates from around 1890 or fairly soon after.
Mid Victorian 1st Foot (Grenadier) Guards Sergeant’s Sword. A rare example of the pattern introduced Circa 1820 and carried to about 1852. This example with plain slightly curved blade, with fuller. The hilt with shagreen grip and brass wire binding. The brass stirrup shaped knuckle guard, incorporates the Regimental device of the Flaming Grenade and motto. The back strap and pommel form a lion’s head. Some age wear, with pitting to the blade, remains a good display item.
Austrian 19th Century Officer’s Cavalry Helmet. A good example, the skull of black japanned metal, with impressive gilt Austrian eagle helmet plate to the front. The gilt comb is embossed with a lion and serpent, this supporting a scarlet plume with horse hair tail. The interior with leather lining. Some professional restoration a very good exhibition item.

A RARE SILVER-PLATED BRASS INCLINING DIAL BY J. SISSON, LONDON, CIRCA 1740 the 4½in. diameter dial with sprung folding gnomon signed I Sifson / LONDON, the hours running IIII-XII-VIII, inner degree scale running 140º-0-140º, hinged by 'XII' to baseplate with hinged latitude arm, level recess, and inset 2¼in. glazed compass with blued-steel needle, contained in fitted plush-lined Morocco leather case -- 5¼in. (13.3cm.) square Exhibited: The Clockwork of the Heavens, Asprey & Company, London, November 1973, item 55 (Private Collection). Jonathan Sisson (1690-1749) worked from the Strand and was father of Jeremiah Sisson who continued between 1749-1783. Both signed their instruments 'J. Sisson' and distinguishing between them has long been debated without conclusion.

A 1920s MODEL GUN TURRET FROM METAL OFF THE SCUTTLED IMPERIAL GERMAN BATTLESHIP HELGOLAND the well-made model fashioned as an inkstand in the form of a revolving gun turret, the inner lid marked "Cast from Metal ex-surrendered German Battleship Helgoland", Thos. W. Ward Ltd., Sheffield, 1922, with two aluminium ink reservoirs, an attractive item, extreme width -- 7½ins. (19cms.) Helgoland was the nameship of a small class of three battleships and one battle-cruiser ordered for the Imperial Navy during the celebrated Anglo-German 'Arms Race' of the early 20th century. Built at Kiel, Helgoland herself was 549 feet in length with a 94 foot beam and displaced 25,200 tons deep loaded. With a main armament of 12-12in. guns, she could cruise at 20 knots and must have been a hugely impressive sight at full speed. In action at Jutland, in Vice-Admiral Schmidt's 1st Squadron, she was interned at Scapa Flow when the High Sea's fleet surrendered after the November 1918 Armistice. Laid up idle for six months, Helgoland was scuttled along with the rest of the fleet on 21st June 1919, after which began the famous salvage operation which lasted throughout the 1920s.
A RARE BOOKCASE/DISPLAY CABINET MADE FROM FOUDROYANT OAK AND COPPER BY GOODALL, LAMB & HEIGHWAY, CIRCA 1899 modelled as a ship's stern and quarter lights with copper strap hinges and banner inscribed 1798 FOUDROYANT 1801, carved wreaths and rope border, rudder head and securing chains, copper maker's provenance label secured within -- 40 x 64 x 19in. (101.5 x 162.5 x 48cm.) Item no.36 in Goodall's catalogue is described as Wall Cabinet in 'Foudroyant' oak, with finely-modelled copper enrichments, &c. Suggested by the stern of the 'Foudroyant'. £60. 0s 0d. Originally there would have been a shaped taffrail with lamps and a profile of Nelson in copper.

Contains printers proof in black on white un-glazed card of special 3d vignette, set of 15 impressions on five different coloured papers in black, brown & blue. Also colour trials in different dual colours on white paper (16). A further set of proofs on coloured papers with stamp printed in green (4). An imperforate proof-sheet in orange & initialled by the designer, also another imperforate sheet in issued colours. A trial run of perforating machine used for the vignette. A number of examples of different plate printings in complete panes of four. An amazing collection with some very rare items!

POSTAL HISTORY : ANTIGUA, 1834 entire sent by packet and addressed Wells, Somerset. An interesting and historical correspondence talking about slaves and the Colonial legislation of 1st Aug 1834. It talks about the different clauses; .."we are required by law supply pay - lodging, medicine, medical care... and all other allowances which they are now entitled to as slaves... In the 7 clause it appears the Negro can leave the Estate and go to another Master if he pleases and can leave his occupation as a labourer... I hope the bill in it's present form will not pass." Has an Anigua dated h/s 'JA 13, 1834'. A superb item!
