Lot 556

WW2 Captured Japanese National Flag and Decorated by US Navy Seabees, fine silk Japanese national flag with the centre having a painted scene of Mount Fuji and a shrine gate. Around the edge is Japanese text which has been translated by the Japanese embassy in London in 1987 to say, ‘Engineer A. Sloker’, the edge place names, ‘Yokosuka’, ‘Tennyan’, ‘Enwitark’, ‘Guam’, ‘Oahu’ and ‘Iwo Jima’, the bottom ‘U.S. Navy’ and ‘Sea Bee Troop’, bottom corner is inked in English, ‘EUGENE A SROKA M.M 3/C’. The flag measures 96 x 67cms. Some areas of shredding and light staining but still a nice displayable flag. The US Navy Seabeas were a construction force which were often brought in to help build infrastructure on captured islands in the Pacific island hoping campaign. Because they were not a front line combat force, many US marines and infantry soldiers fighting in the Pacific campaign, tell stories of men from these units trading cigarettes and food items with front line troops coming off the line for Japanese war souvenirs, many of these men would then decorate flags such as this example and sell them onto other troops to take home as souvenirs, many of these flags exist on the market which actually do not translate to anything. These Seabee decorated flags are an interesting item from the Pacific war.

A Poignant, Impressive and Possibly Unique Memorial to Lance Corporal Paul Scheltema Lampard, Honourable Artillery Company, Killed in Action 7th February 1915, this large marble head and shoulders bust sculpture of a private in uniform of the HAC, with lower tablet to the base detailing it to be of Lance Corporal Paul Scheltema Lampard who was killed in 1915, the reverse of the sculpture has artists details of ‘T. TARPAN 1916’. The sculpture stands 74 cms. Small area of repair to the nose but a very impressive item, which at the time of its creation I am sure would have been of quite some expense to his family. Lance Corporal Lampard served with the Honourable Artillery Company in France from 1914 until he was killed in action on 7th February 1915, being buried at Kemmel Chateau Military cemetery, Belgium. He was the son of businessman Mr Charles Arthur Lampard, known as the ‘Rubber King’ at the time due to his involvement in the importation of rubber products into the United Kingdom, said at the time of his death, just one year after his son, to have been a millionaire. The family home was Holme Park, near Rotherfield, Sussex. Mr Lampard was also a prominent director in the tea firm of Harrison & Crosfield. This memorial we would assume was commissioned by his father before he passed away as a memorial to his fallen son. Please note this lot is extremely heavy, we are not able to offer in house post and packing on this lot. Personal collection or specialist shipping only. Due to its size and weight, we would suggest not suitable for bidders outside the UK unless they can make personal collection.

After a well-publicised and determined duel, Warne was victorious, taking wicket number 500 on March 12, during the 1st Test in Galle. By the end of the tour, the ledger read: Warne 517 wickets, Muralitharan 513 - with West Indian great Courtney Walsh's world record of 519 wickets ready to be broken It was Muralitharan who first claimed that illustrious 'crown', passing Walsh's record during Sri Lanka's Test series against Zimbabwe in May 2004. The champion off-spinner set a new world record when he captured his 520th wicket in the 1st Test in Harare on May 8. Muralitharan then dismissed a further seven Zimbabwean batsmen in the series to take his tally to 527. Shane Warne's quest to overhaul Muralitharan in the world wicket-taking began in the two-Test series against Sri Lanka in Darwin and Cairns in July. Warne took 3 wickets in the 1st Test in Darwin to move within reach of Muralitharan, before equalling his world record mark with a sensational haul of 7 wickets in the 2nd Test in Cairns!
