In his early life, he served in various Imperial German military regiments, including the Garde du Corps. He was made a honorary colonel of the 1st Infantry regiment of Bulgaria, where his brother was Prince of the nation. Queen Victoria would only agree to his marriage of her daughter, if the couple stayed in the UK and became members of the British Royal Family. The couple did this and were married on the Isle of Wight. On 22nd August 1885 he was made Honorary Colonel of the 5th (Isle of Wight, Princess Beatrice’s) Volunteer Battalion Hampshire Regiment. In 1889 he was appointed Governor of Carisbrook Castle on the Isle of Wight and Captain General-Governor of the Island. In November 1895, he persuaded Queen Victoria to let him go to Africa to fight in the Ashanti War, this was granted. He contracted Malaria when the expedition reached Prahsu, 30 miles from Kumasi. He died on board the cruiser HMS Blonde stationed off the coast of Sierra Leone. His body was brought back to the UK and his funeral service took place at St Mildred’s church, Whippingham on the Isle of Wight. His body was interned in what is now to be known as Battenburg Chapel. On her death in 1945, his wife Princess Beatrice’s remains were also placed in the chapel.
