A WW2 era Fairbairn Sykes 2nd Pattern ‘B2’ Commando Knife.Featuring the usual chequered or ‘crosshatched’ brass grip, oval steel cross guard, and a flattened diamond section blade.Complete with its original leather sheath with integral belt loop. The only stamped marks are a broad arrow, and the B2 mark to the guard (with only the bottom part of the 2 distinct). The retaining nut also has the class indentation left over from the construction process.Approximate length 28.4cm, blade length 15.8cm, length including sheath 32.7cm.Condition: some age and service related wear and tear. The tip of the blade is missing, and now has a flattened off appearance. Some mottling and minor surface pitting to the blade, and some minor surface corrosion to the guard. The leather sheath is structurally sound, with a good colour and patina, but the 4 leather ‘tabs’ to the back of the sheath have either been removed or have come away in the past.Important Note: due to recent changes in Royal Mail’s policies, we can no longer use our in-house postage service to mail this item to a buyer. It may be possible to use other carriers to transport the item, but collection by the buyer is strongly recommended.
An early original 1st type German Hitler Youth knife, with scabbard, and the early ‘Blut und Ehre!’ etched motto to the blade. Stamped with the manufacturers name of Hammesfahr Cie, Solingen, and their trademark logo. Featuring the usual chequered black plastic grips secured by 2 domed rivets, with the inset enamelled Hitler Youth diamond set into one of the grips. Nickel plated ‘birds beak’ pommel and cross guard, with the former having the usually seen wear from its contact with the leather retaining strap. Etched Sütterlin type script etched to one side of blade, reading ‘Blut und Ehre!’ (Blood and Honour), which means that the item will pre-date August 1938. Complete with its black painted scabbard with integral leather belt loop and retaining strap with press stud fitting. Approximately 25cm length in its scabbard, blade length 13.6cm. Condition: a used but solid example. Some wear / paint loss to the painted scabbard, but this otherwise remains without dents or splits to the metal. The front side pommel has the normal nickel wear from contact with the leather strap. The enamel HJ diamond is in good condition, and has its usual ‘wobble’ due to how it’s fixed to the handle. The grips remain free of chips or cracks, and are securely flitted. The leather washer that would have sat at the ricasso is missing, likely disintegrated over time. The blade shows scratching and evidence of sharpening, and the motto has lost some of its crispness, but is still quite legible. The leather belt loop is still supple, with the press stud still working. There is perhaps a faint makers mark embossed to the leather, which looks like ‘LS’ and a trade mark.
An interesting and scarce WW2 era Norsk Hydro phial of Heavy Water (Deuterium Oxide), housed in its original nickel tube container, and a pine wood outer case with pinned on lid. Notes: dating from circa 1945 - 1950, the item was originally sourced from the Vermork Norsk Hydro, and they are very scarce to the market, with most examples being housed in museums. The Allied forces of WW2 believed that Germans were racing towards the production of a Nuclear Bomb, and their research relied upon the Heavy Water produced at the hydroelectric power plant located just outside the town of Rjukan in Telemark County, Norway. This led to the Operations Grouse, Freshman, and Gunnerside, with Norwegian Commandos, SOE, British Paratroopers, and Allied bombing ensuring destruction of the site, and the loss of its Heavy Water. In the immediate post war era, the Norwegian saboteurs held reunions at the plant, with each participant receiving a commemorative phial such as this one. The glass phial is securely held within a felt packed nickel tube, with screw on lid. The lid has an engraved Viking longship motif to the top, with the edge having the words ‘Norsk Hydro Made in Norway’ etched onto it. It’s unknown how fragile the glass phial is, plus it is tightly packed into the tube, hence we have not tried to remove it for further inspection. The outer pine case is of rectangular form, with a circular recess bored into the wood. The lid is held in place by two pins or thin nails. The lid also has a pencil inscription, which reads ‘25 272573 99.7%’. The nickel tube length is 16.5cm, with the pine case being 19.1cm. Condition: good. The metal tube shows signs of normal handling, with the lid having some contact marks and minor pitting spots. What can be seen of the glass inner tube is in good condition, but as mentioned above, we have not attempted to remove it further. The pine outer box is good, and shows only minor wear.
A WW2 era German silver grade wound badge. A die cast example made in silvered zinc, with solid back, a round hinge, and C clasp. Marked ‘65’ in raised numerals above the clasp, indicating that the item was made by Klein & Quenzer. Approximately 4.4cm x 3.7cm. Condition: generally good. Some normal service and age wear, with some darkening to the silvered finish, and contact marks to the high points. Slight bend to the pin from wear, but it doesn’t affect how the pin works.
North Staffordshire Regiment interest - A nicely executed, likely interwar period embroidered panel. A label verso states that the piece was made in India by a hospital patient. Featuring the traditional United Kingdom lion and unicorn, and the Roman numerals ‘64’ to indicate the 64th (2nd Staffordshire) Regiment of Foot, which amalgamated with 98th Foot in 1881, becoming the Prince of Wales (North Staffordshire) Regiment. The Staffordshire knot sits to the centre, which is believed to be a Puggaree flash for a slouch hat, and the regimental title in a scroll to the bottom. The panel is framed and glazed. Approximately 60.5cm x 44.4cm frame size. Condition: good. We have not removed the item from its sealed frame, but from what can be observed through the glass, the item seems to be in good order. Perhaps some very minor fading to vibrancy of the colours. The frame appears to be quite modern, and has been overpainted with a silver metallic paint.
A fine and scarce large fragment of copper sheathing, salvaged from the wreckage site of HMS Bounty, in Bounty Bay at Pitcairn Island in the early 1970’s. The piece, patinated with verdigris, oxidisation, and a small patch of barnacles, is housed in a purpose made oak frame, glazed to both sides to allow viewing of the item. The copper is sunk into a slot cut into the base, which allows it sit upright, plus there is also what appears to be an original ships nail hammered into the wood to steady it. The framed has an applied engraved brass plaque to the top, stating ‘HMS Bounty aka HM Armed Vessel Bounty 1787-1790’. Provenance: acquired by R.A.F. Chief Technician John Coleman, likely in 1973 or possibly 1974, when he was stationed there in order to assist with the setting up of the radio station. CH.T. Coleman travelled to Pitcairn on the Royal Fleet Auxiliary ship, Sir Percival, with the R.A.F team and equipment landing there firstly in May 1973, and for a second time in May 1974. The inclusion of two handwritten logs, detailing Island life, residents, weather, and the work carried out, offers an interesting insight into daily life, and the comings and going’s of the inhabitants. Several entries detail fishing and swimming trips in Bounty Bay, with mention of being shown the location of the wreck of HMS Bounty. In an entry from Sunday 20th May 1973, John Coleman states in his log that ‘in fact you can still see a cannon embedded in the coral, it will probably stay there forever. Nearby there were also sheets of copper from the ships bottom, well encrusted with the invading coral’. Another entry from Sunday 1st July 1973 mentions him assisting in the raising on one of Bounty’s cannons from the seabed. It seems highly likely that the copper fragment was salvaged during one of the above mentioned trips in Bounty Bay, though the exact date is unknown. Notes: HMS Bounty, also known as HM Armed Vessel Bounty started life as a Merchant Vessel, before its purchase by the Royal Navy in 1787. It set sail on a botanical mission to acquire breadfruit plants in order to transport them to the British West Indies as part of an experiment to establish whether it could be used as a food crop for enslaved workers in plantations. The ship was commanded by Lieutenant William Bligh, until April 28th 1790, when the famous mutiny occurred, led by the Master’s Mate Fletcher Christian. Bligh was put aboard a 23 foot launch, along with 18 loyalist crewmen, and successfully made the astonishing 4164 mile voyage to the colonial outpost of Timor over 47 days. The mutineers, now in command of the Bounty, made their way initially to Tubuai, and then later to Tahiti, and then back to Tubuai, where the party attempted to establish a settlement, despite constant clashes with native islanders. Over time, discontent grew amongst the mutineers, with some voting to go back to Tahiti and take their chances there. Christian agreed to transport them there, before setting sale to Pitcairn with the remaining 9 mutineers. After being stripped of parts for use on the island, HMS Bounty was set ablaze and destroyed on January 23rd 1790. The bottom section of the hull of Bounty was clad in copper in order to protect the wood from shipworm, and provide extra longevity to the structure. Case size 48.1cm width, depth 11.4cm, height 36cm. Condition: very good. Aside from the obvious oxidisation and verdigris to the copper, the metal is in good stable condition, and seems to be securely fixed in the frame. Some light contact marks to the frame in places, but nothing that detracts. Some very slight foxing to the inside of the glass on both side, likely where some moisture has crept in over the years.
South Nottinghamshire Hussars interest. A good quality sterling silver cigar box with integral lighter and match holder with striker plate. Cedar wood lined, as is usual. Engraved to the ‘Non Commissioned Officers Mess South Notts Hussars from Colonel C.W.Trotter 1912’. Hallmarked for London 1903, and with the makers mark of Joseph Brahma. The box if of rectangular form, and sat upon 4 bun feet. With 2 hinged to top, and a lighter with reservoir, plus a match holder with striker plate to bottom. One of the lids has the inscription from Col Trotter, with the other having the engraved badge of the South Notts Hussars. Notes: Colonel Charles William Trotter is believe to have have first joined the regiment in 1888, and at the time this item was gifted he was a Lieutenant-Colonel, but with the honorary rank of Colonel. He received his full Colonelcy on August 5th 1918. He was mentioned in dispatches twice, and received the Companion of the Order of the Bath in the 1918 Birthday Honours List. Approximately 20.5cm x 11.8cm x 9cm, weight 973.5g. Condition: generally good. Some normal wear from polishing and handling, which has resulted in the inscriptions showing a little wear. Some small dents to the removable match holder and lighter, and a small but deep dent to one of the shorter sides.
A Zulu igqoka shield, of stiffened cowhide, with traditional slots cut into front, into which is inserted a darker coloured hide strips. With single twisted hide handle to the reverse. The shield’s size would indicate for courting ceremonies or dancing, rather than an item of warfare. Some age to the item, but likely dating from the early to mid 20th century./ Approximately 54cm x 33.5cm. Condition: generally good. Some darkening / soiling to the light coloured hide, with some very minor losses to the surface. The reverse has 2 vertical cuts to the hide on one side, which appears as 2 darker lines to the front side.

A late 19th century Khedive’s Sudan Medal (1896-1908), with clasps for Hafir and Firket, with contemporary engraved naming to 1720 Pte J.Brown of the 1st North Staffordshire Regiment. Notes: there a 2 soldiers with the name of ‘J.Brown’ on the relevant medal roll for the 1st North Staffs, but ‘1720 J.Brown’ does not appear to be listed there. The clasp combination for this battalion and regiment is correct, and the naming style is commensurate with the age of medal. Interestingly, a 1720 Pte James Brown of 2nd Royal Warwickshire Regiment was killed in action on October 20th 1914, only 16 days after disembarkation. He is commemorated at the Tyne Cot Cemetery, and is entitled to the 1914 Star with clasp, the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal. His home town is listed as Banbury, Oxfordshire, with his next of kin being Ellen Brown (who appears to have resided in Warwickshire). No further details are provided on the CWGC website, and his age at the time of his death are unknown. The medal is mounted by its ribbon to a fabric covered backing card, and an old label to the reverse suggests the item was sold though Spinks around 1968. Condition: good. Good overall toning to the silver, which does not appear to have been over polished. Good tight swivel suspension, with both claps being firmly attached. Some tiny edge nicks to the rim, but this does affect the naming, which is clear.
