Collection of 1970s Robertson Jam advertising figures, originally called "gollys". Addendum from the offices of the-saleroom.com: Gollies are legal to be sold on thesaleroom.com as per our Prohibited and Restricted Items Policy, but we aware that they can cause offense to some bidders and we strive for our market place to be a safe space for all. As such, while we do permit the sale of gollies, on the site we would be extremely appreciative if you could please add the below suggested disclaimer (or a description of your own choice) to the lot: These items are listed on the basis they are illustrative of a bygone culture in which there were different social norms. We understand the potential controversy surrounding this type of item but believe that providing transparent information about historical context fosters greater understanding of our complex cultural history. Notes:the golly doll was adopted as the mascot and trademark for the Robertson's confectionery brand around 1910 after the company's founder John Robertson visited the US and noticed children playing with them. Robertson's Gollies have been collected by people across the UK and around the world for generations but garnered a contentious image in the 1980s because of links to racism. The trademark was removed from Robertson's branding in 2001.

HISTORICALLY INTERESTING PRESENTATION CIGARETTE CASE FROM JAPANESE GENERAL TOMOYUKI YAMASHITA AND VICE ADMIRAL NAOKUNI NOMURA IN 1941, the engine turned German made cigarette case has an engraved inscription to the inside in German, ‘Zum Andenken an unsere gemeinsame Besichtigungsreise 1941’ (to commemorate our joint inspection trip in 1941) and with engraved signatures of both men. It would appear that this was a gift from the two Japanese officials for German dignitaries after an inspection of the German navy before the war in the far east started. General Yamashita was convicted and executed for War Crimes during WW2 and Vice Admiral Naokuni was the Japanese naval attaché in Berlin. An interesting item.
