A Nicholas II enamel 1896 'Cup of Sorrows', of typical form,10.4cm highA Khodynka 'Cup of Sorrows' or Coronation cup was to be distributed to peasants to celebrate the coronation of Emperor Nicholas II and his wife Empress Alexandra. Rumours circulated that some of the cups contained a gold coin or were in short supply, which led to a stampede resulting in 1300 people being severely injured and the deaths of over another 1300. Devastated, Nicholas wanted to cancel the Grand Ball scheduled for the same evening, but was dissuaded by the Duma against doing so. This decision proved very unpopular with the families of those killed and was an important early public grievance, along with 'Bloody Sunday', which heralded the 1905 Revolution.Condition ReportChips to the edge of the rim and other small enamel damage to body - see photos . General wear and scuffs commensurate with the nature of the item.
