THE ACCOUNT BOOK OF THE FIRST AMERICAN TRADING HOUSE IN CHINA, INITIATING WHAT WOULD BECOME HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN TRADETHE FIRST TRADE WITH AMERICA: FURS FOR TEA In 1792 the American merchant and shipowner Thomas H. Perkins and his brother James founded the trading firm that took their names in order to take advantage of the newly-discovered Chinese demand for American furs, which could very profitably be traded for tea. In 1798 the firm purchased a vessel dedicated to the China trade, and in 1803 employed their senior counting house apprentice, Ephraim Bumstead (1740-1828), to establish the first American trading office in China, at Canton. John P. Cushing, a young employee of the Perkins brothers, was also sent to Canton to serve as an assistant and bookkeeper to Bumstead. Two years later, Bumstead would die on a return passage to America, and young Cushing would grow the Canton trading firm into a commercial giant. We offer here one of the most historic business documents obtainable, the Canton account book from the first full year of operation of the first trading house directly serving China and the United States - today the largest trading partners the world has ever known. The embossed leather covers of the 9 1/4" x 14 1/2" volume are gilt-stamped "E. Bumstead and Co", and the 200pp. book contains 72 hand written pages from January 26th, 1804 until July 5th, 1805 (the last dated entry). The pages are written in a very attractive, precise hand, undoubtedly that of John P. Cushing who was known for his artistic penmanship, but there are some entries executed in another hand, probably that of Bumstead himself. Accounts listed include "Cash", "James & Thomas H. Perkins", "Ephraim Bumstead", "Poonqua, Silk Merch't", "Syngchong", "Howqua", "Youqua", etc. Many other Chinese merchants and traders are mentioned by name, as are vessels and American traders who were represented by Bumstead. Spine covering is gone, covers worn an extremities, but overall very good with contents excellent. An historic item worthy of research!
CHINA TRADING COMPANIES LETTER ARCHIVEGood group of nine A.L.S.s (one a retained copy) and one manuscript document, all related to the trading activities of the G.T. Smiessen Company and the Schwemann Company of Canton. Each letter is addressed to Frederick Huth & Co., a London bank, and all were sent from Canton between January 26 and October 26, 1850. The unsigned manuscript document is the earliest item present, and is dated at Shanghai, Nov. 17, 1849. It contains a partial list of goods being imported and exported between Shanghai and England; the company receives imports of various consumer goods, including "shirtings" and "woollens", and exports several varieties of raw silk and teas. It also gives loading instructions for the export goods and the exchange rate. The letters themselves, of which six are executed by G.T. Smiessen, with the balance signed "Schwemann & Co.", contain a variety of interesting content related to China and the products exported from there, with great detail on the specific state of the markets for individual goods. The writers talk of a great variety of local market factors, including the conversion of many cassia (cinnamon) plantations to tea production, due to low prices caused by a monopoly on the cassia trade, and the resulting shortfall in stocks of the spice. These regular market reports would have been of great importance to a bank such as Frederick Huth, which invested heavily in this overseas trade. Also of interest is a line in the letter dated March 28, in part: "... The Emperor of China, Taokwang, died on the 28th inst aged 70 years and after a reign of 30 years..." Each letter bears folds, with minor age toning, else very good. Smiessen & Co. was founded in Canton in 1848, trading in cassia, tea, silk and opium. It expanded to Shanghai in 1855. Schwemann & Co. appears to be operating as its own independent trading company, but in the China Directory of 1863, G.W. Schwemann is listed as an employee of Smiessen, indicating a merger.

Triumph Dolomite 1500 SE 1980 - “1979 saw the introduction of the Dolomite SE, of which 2163 were built. The bodyshell was of the basic 1500 (single headlamps) but the interior was fitted with luxury trim including burr walnut dashboard and door cappings (the dashboard was the same style as fitted to that of the Dolomite 1300), grey velour seats and matching carpet. All the cars were painted black with wide silver stripes running full length, with the letters “SE” at the end of the rear wing. The SE also sported a front spoiler and Spitfire style road wheels” This delightfull example is one of only 10 Dolomite 1500 SE’s left on UK roads. Complete with all its original SE extras and described as very good in all areas, with a very small amount of work, could be a very unusual show car. Engine and engine bay are both very clean with the engine starting easily and once warm, pulls cleanly through the twin carburettors, giving suprisingly brisk perfomance when pressed. Gearbox and clutch are both smooth in operation and the exhaust has recently been replaced with a stainless steel item. Interior is very good and even still has the original Unipart radio fitted. Rear seats look too of never been sat on and fronts not far behind. The door cappings could do with the varnish renewing to bring up to the standard of the rest of the interior but the dash wood is excellent. The original black extrior still polishes up nicely with no major damage etc and the SE stripes are complete. Original dealer stickers are still on front and rear screens. Coming with a new MOT prior to auction and with a lot of old MOT’s so ready for its new owner.
