Important and Rare Air Training Auxiliary (ATA) Pilots Flying Log Book to Lesley Cairns Murray, Killed in a Crash while Flying a Hudson Aircraft on 20th April 1945. Lesley was 28 years old and came from Charing Cross London. She may well have had previous training experiences and her logbook indicates that she trained on Magisters in Summer 1942, beginning ferrying duties in October of that year, a task for which the women Pilots of the ATA have become deservedly famous. The aircraft she flew include Spitfire VIII & IX's, Swordfish, Hurricanes, Defiants and Seafires. The Log Book has a number of interesting signatures of ATA Officers and others as well as her own. Unusually the "Finding" of the ATA Accident Committee are tipped-in with an original signature from the Chairman and it appears that the cause of the accident can only be surmised "could have been due to loss of speed", two photographs of the crashed aircraft are also included together with research identifying her grave in Chislehurst, South London. A photograph we have seen of Miss Murray, shows an image of a beautiful young lady. A poignant item underlying the, sometimes forgotten, sacrifice of young women during the war. ATA Logbooks are extremely rare, particularly for a casualty and no doubt there is still much to uncover about Lesley's remarkably service in WWII.
Important Special Air Service Regt. Report (SAS) "Interim Report on Missing Personnel of the 2nd Special Air Service Regt. Captured by the Germans in Eastern France in the Autumn of 1944", Copy No 11 Noted as written at Gaggenau, Baden 15th July 1945 and appears to have been printed there. This Report Compiled by an investigation team headed by Major E.A.Barkworth 2nd SAS Regiment contains the evidence surrounding the execution after capture of a number of SAS soldiers. These men parachuted into the Vosges Mountains between August and October 1944 and undertook operations (including "Loyton") to encourage the Maquis and undermine the Germans. Unfortunately Allied progress in France had reached an impasse and the Germans, aware of the SAS presence made every effort to destroy them. The report includes detailed witness statements, including some of those accused of the crime, with a number of "real" photographs (some graphic) after bodies were exhumed and also of Germans who participated and plans of burial sites. 31pp., Noted as copy no 11 with a print run of only 25 copies and as indicated in distribution list was in the possession of Captain Christopher Sykes an ex-SAS participant in these operations. This is an extremely rare, if disturbing, item, representing an important piece of SAS history. Supported by a copy of "Four Studies in Loyalty" by Christopher Sykes himself a member of the SAS team in Eastern France in 1944, (The final chapter describes the mission in some detail), together with two linen "escape maps" 43/B & 43/C of the Eastern area of France. Historically Important and Interesting Desk Writing Folder Removed from Adolf Hitler’s Personal Desk in the Munich Fuhrerbau, Taken by one of Adolf Hitler’s Bodyguards in 1945, with Historical Connections to the 1938 Munich Agreement, the folder of brown leather with ribbed edge was produced by Frida Thiersch, who was responsible for the making of the formal Knights Cross of the Iron Cross award citation folders. The inside with two double pages of white cardboard separated by a leather band, the front inner side with three compartments for correspondence and writing paper. The rear of the folder has the mark for Frida Thiersch. Accompanying the folder is a grouping of original documents, the first dated 1948 and signed in ink by Prof Gerdy Troost, which confirms that she remembers Hugo Wesche as a Police officer at the Fuhrerbau in Munich in 1944, she also goes onto state that he has presented a writing folder and she confirms that this is the example that she had made for Adolf Hitler’s study in the Fuhrerbau. Also with the folder is a typed statement dated 1948 from Hugo Wesche stating how he took possession of the folder. A 1940 dated Christmas card on official Adolf Hitler embossed card accompanies the group which we can only assume was given to Wesche during his service. Hoffman took a famous photograph of Adolf Hitler sitting on his desk in the Fuhrerbau and this writing pad can be clearly seen next to his pen holder and ink blotter, even down to the detail of the laced edge of the folder. A Adolf Hitler ink signed card of this photograph accompanies the lot. The folder shows some expected wear with some scuffs to the leather but generally it is still in good condition. A truly historic item which would have had documents inside that changed the world and history of the 20th century. The Fuhrerbau (Fuhrers Building) in Munich Adolf Hitler’s official building when in Munich. British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain visited the Fuhrerbau in 1938, when he and Adolf Hitler famously signed the Munich Agreement, it is more than likely that the historic document was signed whilst sitting within this folder. Many other historically important and world changing documents would have also been signed using this folder. The building was designed by the famous German architect and husband of Gerdy Troost, Paul Ludwig Troost and constructed from 1933-37. The building still exists to this day and is the home to the Munich University of Music and Performing Arts.
Zulu Spear Combination Weapon, interesting 19th century example being a wooden haft fitted with a spear tip blade. Wire binding to the top and lower section of the haft. The centre would originally of had an axe head fitted, making the item a combination weapon. Overall 80 cms, spear tip 16cms. Axe head now absent.
Anglo-Zulu War Battlefield Recovered Zulu Warriors Spear “Assegai”, interesting example which has a hole in the spear tip caused by a British bullet. The leaf shaped steel tip has straight stem which leads to wire bound cross hatch. Lower three quarters of the shaft has animal hide covering. Very good and emotive item from the Anglo-Zulu war.
