Lot 414

A large size gemstone tree consisting of a brass trunk and branches tipped with polished amethysts, mounted on a section of amethyst geode. See Bonewitz, Dr. Ronald Louis, Rocks & Minerals, 2008, p.222-223. 631 grams, 16cm (6 1/4"). From Brazil; from the historic ‘Victorian Museum’ or later collection of Gregory, Bottley & Lloyd (Gregory's); formerly Gregory, Bottley & Co. (1932-1981) and previously J. R. Gregory & Co. (1898-1932); originally James Reynolds Gregory (1858-1898"). This item is part of a historic collection of fossils and minerals which has recently been reviewed by leading geological expert Dr. Ronald Bonewitz. The firm Gregory, Bottley and Lloyd (Gregory's), was acquired by TimeLine Auctions in 2016. London-born James Reynolds Gregory (1832-1899) founded the company, which is the second longest-running gem and fossil dealership in the world. James was educated at Archbishop Tennison's School, and afterward found employment in a jewellery company on Regent Street. In 1858 he established his own business in King William Street. A few years later he moved to ‘very extensive premises’ in Golden Square, Covent Garden. He was one of the best known dealers in London, exhibiting at major commercial shows throughout the world and winning awards for excellence in Paris in 1867, Sydney in 1879 and London in 1862, 1883 and 1884. James primarily bought his stock at auction, from collectors and other dealers, and supplied many major collectors and scientists of his day. He built superb personal collections, a selection going to the British Museum. He wrote many papers and was a member of several learned societies including the Society of Arts. The business became known as J.R. Gregory & Company in 1896, still under James' management with the assistance of his son Albert Gregory (b.1864"). When James died three years later, the business passed to Albert. At the end of the 19th century most London dealers had folded or retired, many selling out to J.R. Gregory & Co. Albert continued by acquiring Russell and Shaw (Est. 1848) in 1925 and Francis H. Butler (Est. 1884) in 1927. Percy Bottley (1904-1980) took over the company in 1931, renaming it Gregory, Bottley & Company with respect to his predecessors. Percy’s company survived the 2nd World War by buying out all of its competitors, including the supplier to Pitt-Rivers, Samuel Henson (Est. 1840) and G.H. Richards (Est. 1897) in 1936. Percy also added many important collections to his stock including those of Rev. F. Holmes in 1940, and the Graves collection in 1943. Following Percy's death in 1981, the business was sold to Brian Lloyd, whereupon it became Gregory, Bottley & Lloyd. Brian had been Sotheby’s main Natural History expert in the 1960s and 1970s, and subsequently traded from Pall Mall. The business continued to thrive, and Brian purchased the Joseph Neeld (1789-1856) collection in 1974 and the historic gold collection of H.S. Gordon, first exhibited at the Empire Exhibition, South Africa in 1936. Brian moved the business to 12-13 Rickett Street in 1982, and to 13 Seagrave Road in 1993. He carried on the company's specialization in historic collections, most recently acquiring that of Robert Ferguson (1767-1840) in 2000. The business moved to Walmer in Kent in 2008, and was acquired by TimeLine in April 2016. Trading History Est. 1858 (59 Frith Street, Soho) 1859 - 1861 (3 King William Street, Strand) 1862 - 1866 (25 Golden Square, Covent Garden) 1866 - 1874 (15 Russell Street, Covent Garden) 1874 - 1895 (88 Charlotte Street, Fitzroy Square) 1896 - 1906 (1 Kelso Place, Kensington) 1907 - 1926 (139 Fulham Road, Chelsea) 1926 - 1981 (30 (Old) Church Street, Chelsea) 1982 - 1993 (12-13 Rickett Street, Fulham) 1993 - 2007 (13 Seagrave Road, Fulham) 2008 - 2016 (59 Liverpool Road, Walmer, Kent) 2016 - (363 Main Road, Harwich, Essex) [No Reserve] Extremely fine condition.

Wrecked 1735. A rectangular bone comb with fine teeth to both long edges. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by The Man of War and explanatory note with images of the item, with signed enclosure note from Divework (Scilly"). 12 grams, 81mm (3 1/4"). From an old Hampshire collection; acquired by gift from Divework (St. Mary's, Scilly); recovered from T' Vliegent Hart shipwreck, off Holland. 't Vliegend Hert or 't Vliegend Hart (The Flying Hart) was the name of an East Indiaman of the Dutch East India Company. The ship was built in 1729 at 44m (145') length, accommodating 256 crew and 850 tons of cargo. On February 3, 1735 she and her sister ship Anna Catharina left the Dutch port of Rammekens for the East Indies, captained by Cornelis van der Horst. She foundered and sank 18 km off the coast of Vlissingen (Flushing) on a sandbank; all persons on board perished. The wreck of 't Vliegend Hert was discovered in September 1981 and recovery of many interesting items was undertaken. [No Reserve] Fine condition, repaired.

Lot 125

1900-1920 AD. A unique white metal continental silver desk ornament or paperweight figure of Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805 AD), standing, holding hat and cloak; the figure based on six deckle-edged discs of dark blue and red British naval uniform fabric with thick card stiffener beneath and with sterling silver hallmarked base plate with maker's mark 'JD' within triangular cartouche and no date letter. 90 grams, 12.5cm tall (5"). Property of a Harwich, Essex, UK charity appeal; by donation. The figure of Nelson is the handle element of a cast spoon produced by a German maker, possibly J. D. Schleissner, in continental 800 fine silver in the late 19th century; the addition of naval uniform fabric discs as a base suggest that this item was specially commissioned for presentation to someone involved in naval tailoring, perhaps for a member of a firm who made uniforms for Nelson himself, such as Guives and Hawkes of London who have been military and naval tailors since 1771. This item is accompanied by pictures of an example of the original spoon from which the figure was taken. [No Reserve] Fine condition.

- Inspected by the Military Vehicle Trust who confirmed that its chassis was made by Ford in June 1943- A UK 'barn find' that was subjected to a major restoration in 2013-2014- Original WW2 body tub, wings, grille, bonnet and screen sympathetically restoredArguably the most iconic and influential military vehicle of World War Two, the Jeep's legacy is still being felt today. A former UK `barn find', this particular example was extensively restored by its previous keeper during 2013-2014. A ? Ton 4x4 collector, he carried out the following work: Engine rebored, crankshaft reground, new bearings, oil seals, water pump etc; Gearbox overhauled with appropriate parts, bearings, oil seals etc; Transfer Box reconditioned; Propshafts rejuvenated with new universal joints; Front Axle refurbished with new differential bearings and overhauled constant velocity drive shafts, new oil seals etc and Rear Axle reconditioned with new bearings, oil seals etc. The brake system received new pipes, new master cylinder and wheel cylinders, new shoes and new wheel bearings and oil seals etc, while the exhaust system was replaced too. The original WW2 body tub, grille, bonnet, screen and wings were sympathetically repaired and the Jeep rewired incorporating many original items but with the benefit of an upgrade to 12-volts, the lights modified to take modern bulbs, indicators fitted and a conventional towing socket added. The steering box was rejuvenated and new track rod ends installed. The road springs, shock absorbers and spring shackles were reconditioned as necessary. The radiator core was renewed too. An inspection carried out by The Military Vehicle Trust last year confirmed the chassis is an original Ford item that was built in June 1943 and that `the vehicle was substantially complete and genuine'. Subsequently road registered by the DVLA as `YXG 313' and fitted with a correct-type 2.2 litre four-cylinder engine, the Jeep comes complete with a rear mounted Jerry Can and spare wheel, canvas tilt, shovel and axe and US Military bonnet markings. Starting readily upon inspection, this authentically detailed Ford GPW ? Ton 4x4 is ideal for the Goodwood Revival or other period re-enactments.

Lot 2019

This lovely matching numbers TA was built in the Spring of 1939; ie close to the end of the model's run. It is very smartly-presented in Red inside and out and benefits from a relatively recent nut and bolt restoration, during which every item is understood to have been refurbished or replaced - including the original body which was supplanted by a new Naylor's ash example. Owned by the same enthusiast for 24 years, it was then purchased from our Duxford auction in September 2011. Since then it has been largely garaged, but nevertheless treated to: a top end engine overhaul; gearbox, brake and cooling system service; and radiator recore. The vendor currently has no hesitation in classing the bodywork, paintwork, interior trim, engine and transmission as all being in 'excellent' condition. Riding on smart chrome wire wheels, this former concours award-winning two-seater also sports: a rare original Midget mascot; replacement Bloomberg steering wheel; tonneau cover; aero screens; side wind deflectors; and original Shelley tools (housed in two trays). Among its claims to fame are featuring in the BBC's 'Strathblair' TV Series (original tape included) and being used to help launch the new MGF at the RAF Leuchars air base in Fife (photographs included). A fine example of the first, and arguably purist, member of MG's much-loved T Series lineage. Announced in 1936, the TA established the famous T-Series pedigree which would persist until the mid-1950s. Designed around a simple new ladder-type chassis frame with beam axles front and rear, it employed a modified Morris powertrain, including an overhead-valve 52bhp/1292cc engine and part-synchromesh four-speed gearbox. Visually and structurally, the bodystyle was an evolution of earlier MG Midgets. The top speed was up to 75mph, the ride was firm, but the entire driving experience was exhilarating. A total of 3,003 TAs were produced.

Introduced in March 1934, the MG PA Midget was a more sophisticated and durable design than the J-type Midget it replaced. Longer and more rigid, its cruciform-braced chassis was equipped with all round semi-elliptic leaf springs (fixed at their leading edge but held in sliding trunnions at the rear). In standard two-seater form, its classic shape was described by colourful US motoring writer Ken W Purdy as a "grand piano supported by four harps"! This supercharged PA special was built in Australia and used in competition before being imported to the UK approximately twenty years ago. The vendor, an experienced engineer and racer, has owned the car since 2005 during which time it was treated to a chassis up restoration approximately ten years ago. The bodywork and maroon paintwork are currently described as "good" whilst the 948cc engine (complete with Carrillo rods, race pistons and friction-reducing Kawasaki rings) is "spot on", as is the pre-selector gearbox. The electrics have been rewired. The beige interior presents well with the imposing Jaeger rev counter in clear view of the driver behind the removable steering wheel. Under the bonnet the engine bay looks well cared for whilst the Blockley tyres, bonnet strap and rare mechanic's grab handle complete its sporting appearance. Braking is taken care of by Jaguar SS drums to the front with standard drums to the rear. A potent and highly attractive pre-War MG that has been timed at c.95mph at Goodwood, 497 UXH is only being offered for sale to help fund a new vintage project.

This ruggedly handsome example of the most iconic of all WWII vehicles was reputedly delivered for use by the US forces in November 1943. It was acquired by the previous keeper (a well-known member of the MVCC) in 1990 from a Greek army surplus sale and recommissioned in time to participate in the '50 + One' Jeep celebration of 1992. The vendor currently regards 'HVS 837' as featuring 'good' Green paintwork, 2.2-litre engine and four-speed manual gearbox and electrical equipment, and 'original' bodywork. He is offering the left-hand drive Jeep complete with numerous photos, MOTs from 1992 all the way through to 2013, and the all-important: spade, folding shovel, jerry can, rifle holder, spare wheel, canvas tilt and doors, plus rear lap belts - there's even the option of a standard issue carbine rifle by separate negotiation. The mileage of this splendid WWII item of Americana currently stands at an unwarranted 6,442.

The Milwaukee Automobile Company of Wisconsin was founded in late 1899 and proceeded to produce a range of steam cars from March 1900 until, well, it ran out of steam in May 1902. While times were good, the concern decided to make a splash at the first Chicago Automobile Show in 1901. So, in addition to two other cars and two commercial vehicles, it displayed a racing car. Such machines were, of course, rare in those early days of the horseless carriage and the Milwaukee they displayed, and which is now being offered for sale, must surely be one of the earliest surviving machines specifically designed and built for competition. It was manufactured for a Dr J.G. Lovell of Chicago and designed by the company's agent in that city, Frank P. Illsley. At some later stage, possibly by the factory before it closed, the Milwaukee was extensively modified, and the boiler housed up front under a bonnet. Evidently the racer was in this form when restored in 1954 by a Mr Ray Salentine of Waukesha, Wisconsin, and the current boiler and water tank are thought to date from that period. It is believed this fascinating item of Americana dwelt in Beloit near Chicago in the 1960s/1970s and was next heard of at the Carl Benz Automuseum in Ladenburg, Germany in 2001. The vendor acquired the Milwaukee in the Spring of 2005 and, following extensive research, it has been painstakingly restored to original 1901 specification. Despite the evident intentions for it to compete in period, little related history has been uncovered, except for the possibility of a half-mile race at Joliet, Illinois in October 1901.Being pre-1905 it is eligible for the London to Brighton run and has indeed participated in the event. Superbly presented in Black and Green, this fascinating veteran comes complete with boiler certificate valid into 2017 and an entry into this year's London to Brighton Veteran Car Run.
