Lit. Eugen v. Philippowich, Elfenbein, S. 248/249; Philippowich, Antiquitäten/Kuriositäten, München 1966, Abb. 232, 233; P.W. Hartmann, Elfenbeinkust, S. 90." ZICK, STEPHAN (Nuremberg 1639-1715, and his workshop), Nuremberg, late 17th century. Anatomical model of a pregnant woman. Ivory, carved in full round, movable arms. The removable breastplate offers a view on the internal organs: heart, liver, intestines, uterus and the unborn child that was fixed with a thin string. The patella shows the typical lateral groove, wrong anatomical depiction but typical for the Zick workshop. Min. chips. The figure is later fixed on a wooden base with drawer, the original ivory pillow is missing. Provenience: Since several generations property of a Mid-German family of physicians. Until 2018 the figurine was item on loan in the German Ivory Museum in Erbach. Stephan Zick, descendant of a Nuremberg dynasty of ivory carvers was specialized in anatomical models, not only models of women and men, but also single body parts as eyes and ears. His works today are rare collector's items, some of his models are conserved in European museums

Patek Philippe. A fine and extremely rare stainless steel manual wind split second single button chronographReference: 5950ADate: Purchased 16th November 2011Movement: 27-jewel Cal.27-525 PS manual wind, adjusted to heat, cold, isochronism & 5 positions, No.525117Dial: Silvered, applied black coated white gold Breguet numerals, black outer 1/5th second and minute track, black flourishes to each corner, subsidiary dials at 3 and 9 for seconds and 60 minute recording, black leaf hands, black centre split second handsCase: Polished cushion form, snap on exhibition back, start/stop/reset set within crown, split second button at 2, No.4541753Strap/Bracelet: Dark brown Patek Philippe alligator leatherBuckle/Clasp: Signed steel buckleSigned: Case, dial & movement Size: 36mm Accompaniments: Patek Philippe box, outer card, Extract from the Archive Footnotes:When it was launched at Baselworld in 2010, the 5950A turned heads. The single-button, split second chronograph is powered by the revolutionary Calibre CHR 27-525PS. The movement, which was first used in the 5959P is, to this day, still the thinnest column-wheel chronograph calibre ever made. At just 5.35mm it is an exquisite feat of the finest watchmaking. Movements like this are the reason Patek Philippe are so revered.Despite its relatively young age, this piece is already a tried and true collector's item. The 5950A is an Application piece, meaning it was only ever made for and sold to Patek's best clients. Its limited production making it exceptionally difficult to find. The watch's distinctive design only further improves its desirability. While most complicated Pateks are fashioned from precious metals, this reference is crafted in stainless steel, a surprising, but welcome deviation from the norm. The classic raised Breguet numerals and belle epoque flourishes seamlessly compliment the modern aesthetic of the case making the watch timeless and modern. With such consistently strong numbers at auction, this model is the ultimate collector's piece. It is already cemented as one of the most impressive pieces from, arguably, the most important manufacturer. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: YY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the EU, see clause 13.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Only Separate PublicationJoyce (James) A Protest against Plagiarism. An original printed copy of the protest and appeal issued in French by a constellation of American and European literary and cultural figures, on Joyce's birthday 2 February 1927, over the unauthorized publication of sections of Joyce's Ulysses by the American publisher Samuel Roth in his Two Worlds Monthly magazine, without permission or royalty and in 'un texte incomplete'. First and only separate publication, a fine copy, 1 pp folio, with one fold mark, in a custom made folder.Issued over the names of some 167 notable people, the protest was instigated by Joyce and was drawn up by legal friends of his (see Ellmann, 1983, 585-7). It is thus a Joyce item, although he himself did not sign. It complains about the breach of Joyce's rights as author, and invites editors and others to withhold support and publicity from Roth and his enterprises. It was later published in Transition 1 (Paris, April 1927).The signatures, in alphabetical order, include virtually everyone you ever heard of, from Albert Einstein to H.G. Wells, W.B. Yeats, Virginia Woolf, Paul Valery, Bertrand Russell, Marcel Prevost, Sean O'Casey, Liam O'Flaherty, E. Oe. Somerville, Italo Svevo, Thomas Mann, Ernest Hemingway, Alice S. Green, Andre Gide, Augusta Gregory, Benedetto Croce, John Galsworthy, Robert Bridges, Arnold Bennett, Knut Hamsun, Wyndham Lewis, Gabriel Miro, Bunin, Luigi Pirandello, T.S.Eliot. The extraordinary range and quality of the signatories testifies to Joyce's worldwide reputation and influence, five years after publishing Ulysses.Joyce eventually secured a legal judgement restraining Roth's activities, which initially were possible only because Ulysses was for some years banned from import to the United States, hence Joyce could not establish his copyright in the usual way. See Slocum & Cahoon C68.A fragile and important item of the greatest rarity. (1)

An Unrecorded Yeats Item[Wyndham (Pamela) ed.] A Little Couple and A Baker's Dozen for Christmas 1928. Higham, Grange Press, Southwick, 20pp, heavy unbleached paper, uncut. Colour printed wrappers with label, stitched in faded green silk. Title page with borrowed Cuala vignette of a tree and stone wall in a bare landscape signed E.C.Y[eats]. Contents list at p. 20.The 'Little Couple' is a tipped-in photo of a young girl and boy, aged perhaps 10 and 8, signed by the photographer Adrian Harding opposite the first poem (Echo by Pamela Wyndham). The 'Baker's Dozen' of poems and extracts include The Stolen Child by W.B. Yeats, Golden Stockings by Oliver St. John Gogarty, and work by Vita Sackville-West, Coventry Patmore, Alfred Noyes, Laurence Binyon and others of the Edwardian beau-monde, mostly on the theme of childhood.Pamela Wyndham was a sister of George Wyndham, Chief Secretary for Ireland 1900-05; they were great-grandchildren of Lord Edward FitzGerald through his daughter Pamela FitzGerald. Pamela Wyndham married first Lord Glenconner (Tennant), and secondly the former Foreign Secretary Lord Grey of Falloden. The children in the frontispiece must be hers. The connection with the Yeats family is through George Wyndham, a patron of the arts, who knew W.B. Yeats, and who in 1904 gave the Abbey Theatre its patent allowing it to stage public performances, at the request of his cousin Wilfrid Scawen Blunt (a former lover of Lady Gregory). Curious Manuscript Poems by a 19th Century Galway MerchantCo. Galway: M/ss book of homely verses written by Henry Howard, merchant of Eyrecourt in Co. Galway, 1809 - 10. Written in a childish hand, with atrocious spelling. Contained in "The Emerald Copy Book," which dates from c. 1890 (therefore this is a later transcript?) Lacks back cover. 2pp damaged, affecting text. The first and longest item is the sixty-verse "A View of Redmond Hill" This is followed by "A Song," "The Forsaken Shades" ("When a Mr. Pendergast took the Castle and Farm at £1000 for a year he shut out the peoples of the Town") "A Dealers Address to all worthles visitors" (A diatribe against loungers whose presence discourages customers from entering the shop), and the very moving "Widowers Soliloquy, By Henry Howard on the Death of his wife Anne Rosingrave Howard," which concludes with an acrostic on her name. A fascinating and rare instance of rustic versification in the years before the introduction of national schools. As a m/ss, w.a.f. (1)
'The Forlorn Hope of Idealism in Europe''AE' [George Russell]. The Future of Ireland and the Awakening of the Fires. Published at 13 Eustace Street. Threepence. Quarto printed wrappers, 12 pp, stapled, n.d. [1897]. With a preparatory poem, and a note at end inviting 'those interested in the unfolding of the ideas here put forward', to communicate with AE at 13 Eustace Street, Dublin. Horizontal fold, else a very good copy. (1)A very early work, the first of AE's political essays, apparently reflecting in part on the Parnell controversy. He says we, as a race, are 'the forlorn hope of idealism in Europe', but a great destiny awaits us if we can learn from our heroic past and renew our kinship with nature - and if we can reassert our right to freedom of thought. 'Freedom to speak what hopes and ideals we may have; to act openly for what cause we will; to allow that freedom to others -- that liberty is denied. There are but too many places where to differ openly from the priest in politics is to provoke a brawl ..'A very rare item, not found in COPAC. Denson 3.

McMahon embarked for Perth where in time he became an authority on Catholic education, publishing some 30 books. He retired in 1979 and died in 1989. His work is scarce on this side of the world; Neither item found in NLI online catalogue or in COPAC. (2)
