1953 Daimler Conquest 2.5 ‘Genuine Barn Find’ Reg.no. PYC 900 Chassis no. D82999 Engine no. 75133 This Daimler was recently re-commissioned following 20 years of storage in a barn in South Gloucestershire. Originally supplied by a Daimler dealer in Wells, Somerset, it was owned by a Clevedon surgeon, after which it has had only four local owners, the last of whom owned the car for 35 years. The re-commissioning involved fitting a new Lucas heavy duty battery, cleaning the pugs and priming the petrol pump and the engine now runs well. The four speed ‘pre-selector’ gearbox works perfectly and our vendor describes the car as ‘running as she did 60 years ago’. During the last 20 years a replacement dynamo, fuse box and cut out have been fitted. The bodywork and panels all appear sound and remarkably rust free. The interior is all original and the green leather upholstery is very good considering the age. The only significant item which requires replacement is the internal bonnet release cable. Further re-commissioning is recommended in respect of cleaning the brakes etc., but this presents a very straightforward opportunity to start classic car motoring without major expenditure. It comes with original jack, starting handle, wheel brace and all log books, plus the current V5c.   Estimate: £2,500 – 3,000 Bidding is taking place on our sister site i-bidder.com, click here to bid

Judaica – Palestine Statement of Policy. ISRAEL – `THE WHITE PAPER` – [White Paper Cmd 6019] His Majesty`s Stationary Office^ 1939 soft cover. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. ISRAEL `THE WHITE PAPER’ [White Paper Cmd 6019] Palestine Statement of Policy. London: HMSO^ 1939. 8° (243 x 150mm). 12pp. Stapled self-wrappers. One of only 1500 copies of the white paper proposing an independent Palestinian state with power-sharing agreements between Arab and Jew^ restricting Jewish immigration and controlling sale of land to Jews. Increasing Jewish immigration into Palestine was one of several factors that ignited the 1936-1939 Arab revolt in Palestine. The rise of Nazi Germany and the passing of the 1936 Nuremberg Laws stripping 500^000 German Jews of their citizenship led to even greater migration pressure. By 1939^ having secured Jewish co-operation in the suppression of the Arab revolt in Palestine^ and with the realization that war with Germany and Italy was not far off^ Britain resolved to secure alliances with other Arab states. As the Palestinian Arab leader Mohammad Amin al-Husayni and his associates had received funding from Fascist Italy^ the British were keen stop the Italians extending their sphere of influence in the region. In February 1939^ a conference in London to negotiate an agreement on the partition of Palestine dissolved without agreement. Independently^ the British had already decided on a course of action^ appeasing Arab concerns by restricting Jewish immigration just when huge numbers of Jews were trying to flee the Nazi regime. This White Paper fuelled Jewish resentment^ leading to Irgun attacks on British-controlled strategic infrastructure and the creation of the Stern Gang. The provisions of this White Paper were immediately lifted upon the Declaration of the Independent State of Israel. An excessively rare item. Has previous owners initials & reference at top right of cover.

A fountain is in the middle distance and there are various figures strolling^ one with a little dog. Decorative boards a little scuffed. Three peepholes – two circular and one square. Lot 198

China – Naval – the ‘Nanking Incident’ a naval ‘Blue Ensign’ flag^ bearing several holes which are assumed to be bullet holes^ together with a finely executed silk panel bearing a depiction of HMS Emerald with the flags of various nations including the UK^ USA and Japan^ and with the title piece ‘In memory of the Fall of Nanking^ 24th March 1927’. Silk panel in fine condition with brilliant vibrant colours^ laid to a large sheet of heavy duty paper^ approx 20x17ins. Accompanying this lot is a letter dated 2008 to a previous owner from the National Maritime Museum^ Greenwich^ referring to the Nanking Incident^ and the present lot : ‘The story has become a little confused but does check out. There was a civil war in China during 1926 and 1927 and a naval force was deployed to protect British interests. The British Consulate in Nanking on the Yangtze was attacked and looted. The Consul – Mr Bertram Giles was shot in the leg and with his wife^ was amongst a group of foreigners rescued from the city by a landing party of marines from HMS Emerald and bluejackets from the USS Preston and Noa. ‘Mr Giles returned to the United Kingdom where he died a year later. I should imagine the ensign was worn by the ship’s barge from Emerald when it had the Consul on board. ‘The item does have some historic value particularly because of its relevance to Anglo-Chinese relations. If you are considering disposing of it please get in touch with us as we may well be interested.’ It would seem as well as can be established therefore that this flag was flown at the very height of the rescue of the British Consul during what is now known as ‘The Nanking Incident’

Lot 220

Falklands War – autograph – Sir Rex Hunt^ Civil Commissioner to the Falklands during the War map of the Falkland Islands^ bearing the stamp of the Argentinean occupying forces and signed by Hunt to base. Approx size 19x14ins. This is a good example of the official British map of the Falklands produced in 1966 which was clearly captured by the Argentinean forces during the war and given their official stamps – one a title stamp to top left hand corner and the other on the body of the map being the official stamp of the military government of the Malvinas. It was clearly one that was then recaptured by the British and signed by Hunt to re-assert the Sovereignty of the islands. A rare item.

* Jake and Dinos ChapmanUHM011, Bronze, 2002. Purchased from the Jake and Dinos ‘Chapman Family Collection’ Exhibition at White Cube in 2002, accompanied by two copies of the exhibition catalogue. The infamously subversive Jake and Dinos Chapman have, over the years, developed numerous works referencing the global fast food giant McDonalds as a reference of critique towards, what they perceive, as the moral bankruptcy of modernity. Their emphatic attention to detail creates an atmosphere around their work impossible to ignore or surpass. The ‘Chapman Family Collection’ exhibited in 2002 for example, used catalogue numbers of each item such as CFC76311561 and CFC77227084 which are in fact the telephone numbers of McDonald’s branches in central London. Their humour is not lost on the art critics such as Neal Brown who comments “The Chapman’s critique was one of mischievous conceptual slipperiness: both excessively silly and eminently sensible’ (Neal Brown, ‘Burger Fetish’, Modern Painters, Spring 2003, p.95) and two copies of the accompanying book (one Mint)

DE VALERA'S PROCLAMATION THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND. POBLACHT NA hEIREANN. Vol. 1 no. 2, Dublin, Thursday January 5, 1922. Newspaper quarto, 4 pp. Margins frayed, small piece torn from right hand margin with minor loss (not affecting the De Valera item). Front page featuring President Eamon De Valera's Proclamation to the People of Ireland, urging them to say NO to those who would ask them to support the Treaty. 'Fellow-citizens, you are in danger .. If you give way you are undone - all you have gained will be lost, and all the sacrifices you have made will be vain .. Do not impair the moral foundation of Ireland's fight for her freedom. Do not enter upon a compact which in your heart you know can never be kept in sincerity and in truth .. Be bold enough to say NO to those who would ask you to misrepresent yourselves. If there were not a gun nor an ounce of lead in Ireland you should say it .. Stand fast, fellow-citizens, by what you know to be right.' Published two days before the Dail vote on the Treaty, De Valera's appeal was a last-ditch attempt to influence those deputies (and their supporters) who might still be wavering. It was unsuccessful - the Dail voted for the Treaty by 64 votes to 57 on 7 January - and its heightened language suggests that De Valera was already preparing to challenge the Dail vote if it went against him. A very scarce and important item.

DAVITT, Michael [Jr., 1890-1928]. The Rise of the Irish Movement. An Address delivered at the Opening Meeting [of the Literary and Historical Society of University College, Dublin] by the Auditor, Michael Davitt [son of the Land League founder], on Thursday 10th November 1910. With a list of more than 100 distinguished guests. Dublin. Irish Industrial Printing & Publishing Co. Orig. dark green printed wrs, staples (rusting), 18 pp. A few stains, generally a good copy. Michael Davitt was the eldest son of the Land League founder (who died in 1906). He qualified as a doctor in 1914, and at Easter 1916 he treated wounded Volunteers from the College of Surgeons garrison. Later he became a hospital doctor in Galway. He died in 1928, still a young man. His Address surveys Irish history since the early 1800s, saluting O'Connell, emphasising the role of cooperation in achieving national progress, and looking forward to Home Rule, apparently just around the corner. His final paragraph makes a poignant reference to 'those to whom we owe so much, and who are no longer in our midst. To have seen their life's work and the sacrifice of years rewarded, by witnessing the absolute liberation of their native land, was perhaps a reward that few of them thought to receive in the short and stormy period of their lives ..' Not found in COPAC, not in NLI on-line catalogue. A rare item, possibly a unique surviving copy.
