The Great Train Robbery - an original Bank Of England Ten Shillings note signed by x9 of the robbers, including; leader Bruce Reynolds, Gordon Goody, Bob Welch, Roy James, Tommy Wisbey, Buster Edwards, Charlie Wilson, Ronnie Biggs (twice - the rear featuring a sketch by him of a train), and James Hussey. All signed in blue / black ink to the front. Unique item.  The Great Train Robbery was the robbery of £2.6 million from a Royal Mail train heading from Glasgow to London on the West Coast Main Line in the early hours of 8 August 1963, at Bridego Railway Bridge, Ledburn, near Mentmore in Buckinghamshire, England. After tampering with the lineside signals in order to bring the train to a halt, a gang of fifteen, led by Bruce Reynolds, attacked the train. Other gang members included Gordon Goody, Buster Edwards, Charlie Wilson, Roy James, John Daly, Danny Pembroke, Jimmy White, Ronnie Biggs, Tommy Wisbey, Jim Hussey, Bob Welch and Roger Cordrey, as well as three men known only as numbers "1", "2" and "3". A 16th man, an unnamed retired train driver, was also present. With careful planning based on inside information from an individual known as "The Ulsterman" (erroneously named as Patrick McKenna in 2014), the robbers escaped with over £2.6 million (equivalent to £53.5 million today). The bulk of the stolen money was never recovered. Though the gang did not use any firearms, Jack Mills, the train driver, was beaten over the head with a metal bar. Mills' injuries were severe enough to end his career. After the robbery, the gang hid at Leatherslade Farm and famously used the money in a game of Monopoly - unwittingly incriminating themselves whilst doing so as the Monopoly set was used to garner finger prints of the suspects and was instrumental in the Police arresting most of the gang. The ringleaders were sentenced to 30 years in jail.

Lot 12

The Great Train Robbery - Jack Slipper (1924-2005) - 'Slipper Of The Yard' - original 1951 Metropolitan Police C Division Dinner & Dance menu. Signed to the front by Slipper in black ink, dated 2003. The interior also signed by actor Brian Reece who played PC 49 on television / radio. Scarce autograph on a period item. Obtained personally by the original owner.  Jack Kenneth Slipper (20 April 1924 in London – 24 August 2005 in Pershore) was a Detective Chief Superintendent in the Metropolitan Police in London. He was known as "Slipper of the Yard" (referring to Scotland Yard). He was mainly known for his role in investigating the Great Train Robbery of 1963, and in tracking down Ronnie Biggs after he escaped from prison in 1965, although he had to leave Brazil without Biggs. 1949 Land Rover Series I 80€ Transmission: manualMileage:196The Land Rover Series I is an iconic off-road vehicle that was first introduced in 1948. It was designed by Maurice Wilks, the chief designer of the Rover car company, who was inspired by the World War II Willys Jeep. The Series I was built with simplicity and functionality in mind, which made it a reliable and versatile workhorse in rural areas and on rough terrain. The Land Rover Series I was available in three body styles: a soft top, a hardtop, and a pick-up truck. It was powered by a 1.6 litre petrol engine which produced 50 horsepower, which may not sound like much by today's standards, but it was more than enough to get the Series I through tough terrain. The Series I was not only popular in rural areas but also gained popularity in the military and among explorers. Its ruggedness, durability, and off-road capabilities made it the perfect vehicle for expeditions to remote areas. Today, the Land Rover Series I is a collector's item, and enthusiasts continue to appreciate its unique design and impressive capabilities. This particular example is an early 'lights behind grille' example and is presented in the lesser seen hue of Sage Green. Sage Green was the standard colour for early Land Rover's, until the first military orders came in late 1949, which meant the standard colour became the far more commonly seen Bronze Green. This example was built on 11th May 1949 and was shipped to Champion Motorcars, Adelaide, Australia. It then spent the vast majority of its life in the wonderful dry climate of Coober Pedy, Southern Australia, known for its opal mining, which would have no doubt meant the chassis and body remained in fantastic condition.A full restoration took place in 2018 and has been completed to an exceedingly high standard in Australia. This Land Rover could easily pass as a two or three year old car, it doesn't look at all like the 74 year old vehicle it is. The brakes have recently been overhauled and this Series I is ready to take on the show scene this summer.

Lot 446

A pair of early 20th century German metalwares silver plated candlesticks, circa 1900, marked WMFN for Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik, in the Neoclassical style, each filled square concave base decorated with swags, bows and ribbons over a textured ground, Corinthian column and acanthus capital, 12 x 12cm, 31cm high The initials 'WMFN' have been struck in italics and are accompanied by the 'Antler' mark, used around 1900. This extra mark was developed from the Wurtemburg Coat of Arms, but its meaning is not clear. It may be in commemoration of WMF's 20-year jubilee, or simply in celebration of a new century. The letter 'N' following 'WMF' represents the German word 'Neusilber', or nickel silver, the base metal material used to make the item before being silver plated. The 1/0 mark relates to the thickness of the silver plating. These series of marks are rare on WMF-made items.

Lot 492

A George III 18th century silver hot water urn and cover, mark of Daniel Smith & Robert Sharp, London, 1770, of traditional pear shaped form with gadrooned waist and two fixed reeded shell mask hook handles, fluted spigot terminating in a lion mask and with fluted ivory tap, engraved to the front with the arms of MONOUX impaling RIDDELL, and to the back with the arms of at present an unidentified family impaling FRANCKLIN quartering MONOUX, unmarked friction fitting domed cover with gadrooned rim and foliate decoration terminating in an acorn finial, lower rim with bayonet fitting to the base with locating flange, capstan upper with gadrooned rims, engraved with matching MONOUX/RIDDELL arms as above, on a square base, each side with an applied rosette, 13.5 x 13.5cm at the base, 46cm high, 111.7ozt grossProvenance: From the estate of the late Barry Lock (1934-2021)The arms to the front of the urn and on the plinth, given the date of hallmarking, commemorate the marriage of Sir Philip Monoux, (circa 1739 - 1805), the 5th Baronet of Wootton, Bedfordshire and Elizabeth Riddell (circa 1739 - 1814). Philip and Elizabeth were married on 22nd June 1762. He was the only son of Humphrey Monoux and his wife, Mary Savage, whilst Elizabeth was the daughter of Ambrose Riddell, of Eversholt, Bedfordshire. Philip’s great grandfather was Humphrey Monoux, of Wootton and was created as a Baronet, styled ‘of Wootton’ on 4th December 1660. Philip succeeded his cousin, Sir Humphrey Monoux, the 4th Baronet of Wootton on 3rd December 1757. Philip was admitted as a Member of Gray’s Inn on 18th July 1754. He also served as a Major in the Bedfordshire Militia and served as the High Sheriff of Bedfordshire for the year 1763 – 64The arms to the back of the urn commemorate a marriage of an unnamed gentleman to a daughter of the Francklin family. Given the evidence of the earlier Monoux arms, it appears that this urn came down through the family to an unnamed granddaughter of Sir Philip Monoux, the 5th Baronet of Wootton and his wife, Elizabeth. This granddaughter would have been probably the child of Judith Riddell Monoux (baptised 1st April 1774 died 9th May 1813), the daughter of Sir Philip and Elizabeth. We know that Judith married a gentleman by the name of Richard Francklin (died 1843) at the Parish Church of St. Swithun on the 26th February 1807. Sadly, due to the lack of genealogical information, it has not be possible to identify with any certainty Richard and Judith’s daughter or the identity of her husband. This item is offered for sale in accordance with the Ivory Act 2018 and has been assigned an exemption certificate Ref No: YK8VT7S9Overall in good condition with no obvious sign of damage or repair. Some surface scratches and very minor bruises as to be expected and commensurate with age and use. The unhallmarked cover is a good fit. Tap a little stiff but turns in both directions. Minor cracking to the ivory at the junction with the silver. Bayonet fitting to the base firm and positive. Flange to the base a little out of shape but this does not affect the fitting. Hallmarks and engraving clear and readable. Not tested for leakage and the tap has not been tested.

William Staniland of Selby appears to have been a merchant trader and owner of a number of merchant vessels, who later became a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. In 1812 there were numerous brigs named 'William' listed in Lloyds registers and there is no way of knowing which one is referred to in the engraving.
