Shackleton and Lord Northcliffe), plus a fragment of the original canvas taken from Bleriot's aircraft (approx. 21 x 13 cm.) and handwritten authentification note by D.M.J. Olympic Games, London, 1908, white metal medal by Mackennal, struck by Vaughton, Fame standing upon a globe, rev. quadriga, 50mm. (edge neatly eng. K. Powell, Lawn Tennis), extremely fine, in (damaged) card box of issue; together with an extensive collection of athletics prize medals in gold (9 - total wt. 59gms., 9ct. fine), silver (10) and bronze (7), all named to K. Powell, mostly for hurdles, including Cambridge University (4 - 3 AR & 1 AE, all glazed), and badges (4), generally extremely fine, mainly cased as issued (31) Although not a 'prize' medal, it is believed that named examples of the first item were given to Competitors; Kenneth Powell was later killed in action during the Great War on 18th February 1915.

The second edition printed on Arnold & Foster mould-made vellum bound in half red niger morocco with leather fore-edge and parchment sides. Folio. This copy is from a public library reference collection and has a library bookplate to the front pastedown, a printed gummed label to the head of the front free endpaper and two small circular ink stamps to the textblock. It has had very light use and is consequently clean, tight and bright: a very handsome item.
WORDSWORTH, William. THE POETICAL WORKS OF WILLIAM WORDSWORTH. Edward Moxon, London, 1851. A new edition. Large 8vo. With the engraved title-page of the 1847 edition preceding the letterpress title-page. This edition was published before the appearance of The Prelude later in 1851. One small horizontal tear to the margin of one leaf repaired with sellotape, otherwise internally very clean and bright with just a little foxing to the first and last few leaves. In full red morocco, richly gilt. All edges gilt. With a Harrow School prize bookplate to the front paste-down. Overall a handsome item with just a touch of wear to the corners and very slight rubbing to the spine bands and extremities.

Overall, an attractive and desirable item which has become scarce.

Lower, Richard, Tractatus de Corde, Item De Motu & Colore Sanquinis et Chyli in eum Transitu, Amsterdam, Danielem Elsevirium, 1671, 8vo (155mm x 90mm.), title vignette, initials, head-pieces, 6 folding plates at end, blind stamp on left side title margin, contemporary calf, extremities rubbed, Third Edition. 'Lower made the next great advance after Harvey in the physiology of blood circulation when he determined experimentally, with the assistance of Robert Hooke, that venous blood is changed to arterial blood in the lungs by virtue of its contact with air. The experiments leading to this discovery are reported in the third chapter of Lower's De corde, a work that also contains a number of other important observations, such as the scroll-like structure of the cardiac muscle (confirmed 250 years later by Mall), the heart's contractive and expulsive movements, the tamponade effect of pericardial effusion and the limiting effect of pericardial adhesions on the heart.
A GWR wall plaque from the Swindon Recreation & Sports Club. It is lettered, in ornate serif capitals, "To The Memory Of Sir William Stanier F.R.S. Who Was The First President Of The Club 1931". Octagonal cast brass, 163/4"x81/4", in a rectangular wooden display frame with marquetry, 25"x161/2". A unique item for GWR and LMS collectors - but then he did work for both Companies!
