A rare WWII Second World War RAF Royal Air Force ' Guinea Pig Club ' (for all RAF aircrew that underwent pioneering surgery to heal their wounds) brass table lighter. The French-made large brass table lighter featuring the Guinea Pig Club emblem to front. Engraved ' The Sty - Ward III - Q.V.H - East Grinstead '. The QVH standing for Queen Victoria Hospital, where the procedures took place. A rare and poignant item. Measures approx; 10cm tall. The Guinea Pig Club, established in 1941, was a social club and mutual support network for British and allied aircrew injured during World War II. Its membership was made up of patients of Archibald McIndoe at Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead, Sussex, who had undergone experimental reconstructive plastic surgery, including facial reconstruction, generally after receiving burns injuries in aircraft.

A fabulous original antique 19th century Victorian ' Ordinary Bicycle ' ( Penny Farthing ) - iron framed, black painted (although appears originally to have been green), with wooden grips and single rod-brake, large spoked front wheel and similar smaller trailing wheel, with solid rubber tyres. Later leather saddle. Appears to have undergone some restoration, and appears in wonderful useable condition. Original retailers' brass plaque to front for ' R. J. Beer ' Cycle Agent & Saddler - 22 High Street, Bridgwater '. A wonderful example. Measures approx; 154cm total height, with the large wheel being 137cm diameter. The Great Train Robbery - Ronald ' Ronnie ' Biggs (1929-2013) - original hand drawn sketch and autograph. The sketch, drawn on a pale green album page, depicts a train which reads ' ER - CASH '. Biggs has signed the sketch underneath and has added ' Rio - 1996 '. A rare and unique autographed item. Obtained in person by the vendor. Ronald Arthur Biggs (8 August 1929 – 18 December 2013) was one of the men who planned and carried out the Great Train Robbery of 1963. He subsequently became notorious for his escape from prison in 1965, living as a fugitive for 36 years, and for his various publicity stunts while in exile. In 2001, he returned to the United Kingdom and spent several years in prison, where his health rapidly declined. Biggs was released from prison on compassionate grounds in August 2009 and died in a nursing home in December 2013.
The Great Train Robbery - Ronald ' Ronnie ' Biggs (1929-2013) - original personal telegram sent to Biggs during his time in Barbados. The telegrame, sent from an unknown person, reads ' Hearty congratulations on your deceit of the British Attorney General's devious scheme to have you kidnapped and extradited '. The telegram is accompanied by its original envelope which is addressed to the Brazilian Embassy, Barbados. Accompanying the telegram is a personal photograph (previously unseen) of Biggs holding the item. In March 1981, Biggs was kidnapped by a gang of British ex-soldiers. The boat they took him aboard suffered mechanical problems off Barbados, and the stranded kidnappers and Biggs were rescued by the Barbados coastguard and towed into port in Barbados. The kidnappers hoped to collect a reward from the British police; however, like Brazil, Barbados was found to have had no valid extradition treaty with the United Kingdom and Biggs was sent back to Brazil.Ronald Arthur Biggs (8 August 1929 – 18 December 2013) was one of the men who planned and carried out the Great Train Robbery of 1963. A 20th Century Polynesian style carved hard wood Tiki post head with tattooed face grimacing with tongue protruding CONDITION REPORTS 73cm height. Surface scratches, scuffs and knocks to the wood. Splits to the wood in areas. Areas of red painted decoration still present. Small areas of loss at the base. An area of loss on the side of the post head. Unsure if this is a natural area of loss and possibly from the carving process but appears to be of some age. Item has general wear and tear commensurate with age and use. A 19th Century Japanese Meiji Period porcelain charger, polychrome decorated with hooded cranes in flight with scrollwork under-glazed blue and white verso, bearing faux six character Chinese "Chenghua" mark to base CONDITION REPORTS Diameter approx 61 cm x 11 cm high. Some surface scratches, accretions, etc. Some imperfections to the glaze and some inclusions - these are from the firing process. Wear to the gilt both on the birds and to the rim of the charger. A circa 1900 oak cylindrical stick stand by Liberty bearing label to underside "Liberty, Birmingham - London & Paris" CONDITION REPORTS Has numerous surface scratches, scuffs, knocks and dents to the wood. Some small chips in areas mainly to the edges of the hoops. Some discolouration and fading to areas, there are what appear to be flecks of white paint in a small area. There is a small split to the wood on one of the hoops where one of the pins is. A slight gap where one of the hoops where the ends are pinned.. Some tarnishing and pitting to the decorative metal studs. No obvious signs of restoration, re-polishing, re-varnishing etc. Item is structurally sound and solid with wear and tear commensurate with age and use. See photos for details.
A 19th Century Chinese famille-rose bowl, the centre field decorated with birds and butterflies amongst blossom, the flared rim similarly decorated with panels of birds and blossom CONDITION REPORTS Numerous light surface scratches, accretions, etc. Wear to the gilt and some parts of the decoration. Possibly some areas of discolouration. There are two large cracks and old repairs - one that spans the entire diameter of the bowl and one that goes around the main body of the bowl and up to the rim where there is a small areas of loss to the edge of the rim. An unpublished typescript of a novel by Margaret Durrell, the younger sister of novelist Lawrence Durrell and elder sister of naturalist, author, and TV presenter Gerald Durrell, whose lives were recently adapted to a TV series entitled The Durrells. The typescript includes numerous manuscript changes to the text, including an alternative ending to the plot. This lot also includes a copy of the first edition of Margaret's first and only publication Whatever Happened to Margot, inscribed by the author to her son with A brief reminder of the days gone by, love Mother dated 13/02/1995.
