While exploring the White Nile region various members of her party died, including her mother. She was later murdered in Libya in 1869/70 during her attempt to become the first woman to cross the Sahara. John Ernest Tinne, whose copy this was, was her half-brother from Liverpool who had visited her in Cairo in 1865 to try and persuade her to return home with him. She refused and he left with the bodies of her mother and a maid, and her ethnographical collection (now in the Liverpool World Museum). Rare, only one copy listed by Library Hub (British Library).

Though popular in its day, with many 17th century printings, His Wife is scarce in all early editions.James Northcote (1746-1831), portrait-painter. At the time of acquiring The Tell-Tale he was only twenty-one and apprenticed to his watch-maker father. He later moved to London as a painter and became known for his conversation or "table-talk", possibly aided by this little book.

The third, first published in 1671, is one of the earlier books offering advice to those in more humble circumstances, while the last was a popular work by the physician and health reformer Percival, who campaigned for better conditions for factory-workers in Manchester.

The first item is a translation of his L'Art de Connoistre les Hommes of 1660 and includes sections on astrology and cheiromancy.

The second item is a rare edition of Cordier's Civilité Puerile first published around 1557; the third is a rare courtesy novel in which the prinicipal plot involves a French nobleman subtly disguising "profitable lessons for young gentlemen and ladies of noble lineage" in novel form.

ESTC lists 2 copies in the National Library of Scotland and 4 in America.

Morvan de)] Reflexions upon Ridicule, first edition in English, browned and damp-stained, contemporary panelled calf, scuffed, rebacked, spine gilt, [Heltzel 136], Tho.Newborough, 1707, all rubbed; and 2 others including a second edition of the first, 8vo et infra (5)⁂ The first mentioned includes chapters on education, dress, gallantry, affectation, envy, idleness, wit & humour, impertinent curiosity, religion, and drinking. It is possibly by George Berkeley, Bishop of Cloyne, who wrote The Ladies Library published the previous year. The second item is the second English translation of Castiglione's classic work, after Hoby's of 1561. Samber's translation was first published in 1724 by Bettesworth, this is the second issue with cancel title.

He was the recipient of over 400 letters from his father which were edited and published by his widow, Eugenia Stanhope after both father and son had died. The supplement to the letters is one of 4 editions published in the same year, this one being one of only 3 UK copies listed by ESTC with 6 more in America.

Library Hub lists only 3 copies (BL, Cambridge, Oxford) of this edition of Trusler, and only one copy of the second item (BL).

Binding.- Patrick (Simon) The Christian Sacrifice, defective, contemporary red morocco, probably by Queens' Binder A, richly gilt, covers with an all over design of linked 'drawer handles' around floral motifs with many petals infilled with black or silver paint, spine in compartments and decorated with painted floral motifs, rebacked, backstrip with some loss at head (restored) and faded, some petal paint faded or rubbed away, corners restored, some staining, rubbed, g.e., [?Wing P765], 12mo (151 x 91mm.), [?R. Royston], [?1682]. sold as a binding and not subject to return. ⁂ A number of the ornaments used here are very similar to item 61 in Howard Nixon's English Restoration Bookbindings, 1974 (Queens' Binder A, possibly William Nott).

Lamb (Charles [& Mary]) John Woodvil, a Tragedy...to which are added, Fragments of Burton, first edition, a fine copy in handsome later crushed dark blue morocco, by Rivière & Son, covers with triple gilt fillet border, spine gilt in compartments, inner gilt dentelles, t.e.g., others uncut, 1802; The Works, 2 vol., first collected edition, lacking advertisement leaf at end of vol.2, modern blue morocco, by Bayntun of Bath, covers with geometric panel formed by rules in black & gilt and small gilt circles to corners, spine gilt, g.e., spine slightly faded, 1818; and an 1867 Essays of Elia with mounted manuscript note by Charles Lamb, 8vo (4)⁂ The first mentioned is Lamb's first dalliance with prose drama; against the advice of his friends Coleridge & Southey he submitted John Woodvil to the Drury Lane Theatre but the play was deemed unsuitable. The work also includes Mary Lamb's poem 'Helen', marking her first appearance in print, while the second item also contains poems by Mary.

Fellows had discovered the ruins of Xanthus, the ancient capital of Lycia, on his first expedition to Asia Minor in 1838. His account of his discoveries (see previous lot) generated great excitement in England and on behalf of the British Museum, a firman was requested from the sultan to export some of the Lycian treasures to England. As a result seventy-eight packing cases of sculptures were exported to the British Museum in 1842.Baron Behr was an important collector of coins who donated part of his collection to the British Museum.

Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Old chips and splits. Some old repairs and replacements to veneer and moulding - see images. Small amounts of filler used in places. Evidence of old worm - see images. This is mainly only immediately visible to the rear panels where there are some resultant fragmentary losses.Handles and escutcheons appear original. The locks are later replacements. The key is present to operate the locks. Rear panels all appear original. later repairs and replacement elements to feet, mainly to underlying supporting blocks - see images. The main veneer of the feet matches the remainder of the piece well and is thickly cut veneer. Later drawer runners applied to undersides of drawers.The front of the chest shows more sign of polishing from use and natural overall. The side panels are darker and show some evidence of old dark varnishThere are some other very minor areas of varnish that the appearance of could very easily be improved. The appearance of some old repairs could easily be improved by a restorer also. Some minor movement and some small gaps between floor elements of drawers from shrinkage as one would expect to see to an item of this age.Old vertical splits to the side panels as one would expect to see to an item of this age (see images) The interior throughout has a very nice original 'dry' feel to it. Later runners have been applied to the underside of the edges of the drawers to aide the running of them. There are some later supporting blocks of timber to the interior of the carcass (as most often seen).This is an attractive piece of furniture in largely original condition. Old splits and chips. Some additional indented marks. There is a partial dark ring mark to the top surface. Careful polishing by a restorer could likely improve the appearance of this. Some of the pigeon holes to the interior bear old ink inscriptions (see images) probably of 19th century date. The leather insets with marks, abrasions and some discoloration. The main central leather panel with some untidiness and losses at the edges and some lifting (see images) Some staining to drawers interiors including some old ink stains(see images) The main writing drawer with evidence of a split to the floor of the drawer. (see image)Some fairly straightforward attention appears likely to be required (by a restorer) to the fitting/ fixture of the sliding top above the writing surface and the section of timber above it. None are damaged or broken but may need simple adjustment/ re-fixing in order to operate entirely satisfactorily. The drawer handles to the interior all appear to match and be original. They are generally in fair original condition. They are ivory. Lacking keys but the lock is open. The lock appears original.
