George Fitzroy Henry Somerset, 3rd Baron Raglan - 1857-1921); and a 19th century Campaign Trunk made of pine, leather-covered and with brass studded ornamentation over the domed lid and with two brass folding carrying-handles at each end, 24in. long x 13in.wide x 12in. tall, paper-lined interior and with an iron lock (some wear throughout). Footnote: It is believed that the above items were sold at public auction in the early 1930s. Fitzroy James Henry Somerset (1788-1855), 1st Baron Raglan, is perhaps best remembered as being the rather ineffective but ultimately successful commander of the British forces in the Crimea. His military career began during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1807 he first served on the staff of Sir Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington, and accompanied him to Portugal and spent the Peninsular War as his aide-de-camp and military secretary. He distinguished himself in a number of actions and rose to the rank of brevet-major, and in the short peace of 1814-15 he married Wellington’s niece. He was wounded at Waterloo and had his right arm amputated. During the following years of peace he led a distinguished civil and diplomatic career, the title of the Baron of Raglan being created for him by Queen Victoria in 1852. In 1854 he was promoted to a full general and given the fateful command in the Crimea. He and his staff were blamed for the terrible conditions the troops suffered during the incredibly harsh winter campaign that year. Despite several tactical errors on his part the eventual allied victories at Balaklava and Inkerman resulted in him being made a Field Marshal. The winter and strains of command had taken a heavy toll on him and he died of dysentery in the summer of 1855. His second son, Richard Henry Fitzroy Somerset (1817-1884) became the 2nd Baron Raglan on his death (his first son Arthur William Fitzroy Somerset dying in 1845 of wounds received at the battle of Ferozeshah). He in turn was succeeded by George Fitzroy Henry Somerset, 3rd Baron Raglan (1857-1921).

Early Engraving of Isambard Kingdom Brunel by D.J. Pound (floruit 1842-1877) from a photograph by John Jabez Edwin Mayall (1810-1901). This stunning item, tastefully mounted in a glazed frame, is museum quality. Indeed, many works by Pound, after photographs by Mayall, appear in the National Portrait Gallery including an example of this very one. It is undated but confirmed by the NPG to be 1859. The image measures approximately 11¼" x 8" and overall in frame, 19" x 15".
Great Northern Railway Waiting Room Mirror. A quite wonderful item measuring 29" x 39" with a substantial, oak surround with stepped lower edge, all beautifully polished. Has 'GNR' branded into the rear. Recovered from Ware Station where it was, at some time, transferred from Hertford Station.
Signal Box Brass Cased 250 Ohm Relay. A substantial item from Wolverhampton High Level area. It still has the original, LMS lead seal attached and a small, traffolite plate 'DH 112'. Together with a delightful, cased Signal Arm Indicator Gauge. A simple, yet extremely effective device that would have clipped onto the signal arm and accurately shown the angle whilst 'On' and the angle when 'Off'. Had there been any misalignment, the indicator would show 'Wrong' and the angle of error. Looks very much as though it is still in working order. A pair of very nice items, once in use in the Wolverhampton area.
GWR Office Messengers Leather Bag for carrying Wages Documents between the Gas Works Office and Carriage & Wagon Works Wages Office Swindon. Circa 1930, this is a wonderful item that has the GWR Roundel impressed into the leather in less than 4 places. Interior strap and buckle intact but the outside strap has a little loss. Found inside are three, GWR circulars for Banbury, Leamington and Princes End.
Signal Box, Tyers Mahogany Cased Train Describer Receiving Instrument, ex Shelwick Junction Signal Box, Hereford. Compliments the large Train Describer in the next lot in this auction. This instrument has just two segments populated with description. They read:- For Worcester Line: For Shrewsbury Line. A wonderful item in extremely good condition. Shelwick Junction still exists and it is where the Worcester line branches eastward from the old GWR/LNWR Joint line to Shrewsbury.
GWR Signal Box, Tyers Mahogany Cased Train Describer ex Barrs Court Junction Signal Box Hereford. A magnificent and substantial item in what appears to be full working order and complete. The front, top segmented dial is fully populated with the following:- Pass Train Ex Shrewsbury For Barrs Court: Pass Train Ex Worcester For Barrs Court: Freight Train Ex Shrewsbury For Barrs Court:Freight Train Ex Worcester For Barrs Court: Freight Train Ex Shrewsbury For Barton: Freight Train Ex Worcester For Barton: Freight Train For Moorfields. The lower indicator mimics these of course and when the peg is inserted and the clockwork mechanism activated, the appropriate indication is sent to the next box. Apparently, knowledge of this instrument was previously not known. Quite wonderful.
Bristol & Exeter Railway large format Bye-Laws & Regulations notice on linen and mounted in a glazed frame. A wonderful and very early item having a hand-written date of 24th February 1869 and signed by the Secretary and the Assistant Secretary of the Board of Trade. Impressed with the company seal. Measures 21" x 26", surprisingly having only minor damage. An historic item indeed.
Firemans Call Box, almost certainly of LMS origin, mounted on a wooden plinth. This ex lineside instrument was recovered from the Wolverhampton area and is basically a tombstone shaped, C/I item that sat at the base of a home signal. Used by the Loco Fireman when a train was halted at the signal. It was a device to alert the signalman of the trains presence and would have been interlocked with the block instrument to protect the rear of the train. The unit is clearly embossed " Firemans Call Box, Press Plunger. If Hooter Does Not Sound - Go To Box". A real rarity.
