A CHARLES II OAK, FRUITWOOD AND SNAKEWOOD ENCLOSED CHEST OF DRAWERS CIRCA 1670 The moulded panel doors opening to three long drawers 87cm high, 93cm wide, 60cm deepCondition Report: There are marks, scratches, chips, splits, cracks, knocks and abrasions consistent with age and use.The door locks is a later replacement as is the brass door pin of the left hand door. The door hinges to one door vary from the other door. Both sets have significant age but atleast one set are likely to be of 18th or 19th century date. The tapering type seem to be more faithful to that which one would expect to see on an item of this age and type. There are several old fillets of replacement timber (see images) these are mainly to the interior of a cupboard door and one to a drawer front. Two of the drawers have stuck down newspaper to the floor of them. The rear panels are original. One handle to the top drawer has previously been moved slightly. They are possibly both replacements in period style. The handles to the interior drawers appear original. The wire fixtures have some losses and some have been replaced with alternate wire fixtures. The drawer runners are replacements. There is some old worm damage, this is mainly confined to the boards of the underside of the chest and the feet. The front feet are replacements and they have been fairly crudely attached/ secured (see images) Please refer to the additional images for a visual reference of condition. Y A WILLIAM & MARY KINGWOOD, WALNUT AND SEAWEED MARQUETRY CABINET ON CHESTCIRCA 1690The moulded cornice above a cushion moulded drawer, the panel doors opening to two banks of five drawers176.5cm high, 99cm wide, 59cm deep For a cabinet on chest of the period incorporating elaborate marquetry to a similar extent, see Christie's, London, The Collector: English Furniture, Clocks & Works of Art, 15th November 2017, Lot 146 (£43,750). The kingwood veneers on this piece were known as princeswood up until 1740. In 1670, John Evelyn described princeswood as one of the 'natural' reds used by cabinet-makers and was the most expensive wood available in England in the late 17th Century. Timbers with a vivid red colour were particularly sought after (A. Bowett, 'Myths of English Furniture History: Laburnum Wood Furniture', Antique Collecting, June 1998, pp. 20-23).Condition Report: There are marks, scratches, chips, splits, abrasions consistent with age and use. some old repairs. The handles, and escutcheons are later replacements that are probably mid 18th century. The locks likely date to the first half of the 18th century. One key operates the cabinet door lock, the other key present operates several of the lower drawer locks, however some will require some adjustment/ repair to operate fully. There are some fillets of timber adjacent to some of the locks to compensate where larger locks have previously been placed there. (as often seen) The rear panels and drawer linings throughout are original. There is some seperation (gaps) between elements of the drawer linings as expected for the age. The turned bun feet are entirely faithful to the period style and have age but are not original. Beyond the immediate excellent attributes to this cabinet on chest, the presence of unusual exotic timbers including rosewood and kingwood are quite rare for an item of this period. The presence of the ownership label to each section is also a nice piece of history to the item. There is evidence of old worm but relatively minor overall and largely confined to the underlying blocks (see images) , the visible holes largely to the unveneered areas. Please refer to the additional images for a visual reference of condition.Condition Report Disclaimer
A GEORGE III MAHOGANY TRAY TOP NIGHT COMMODE CIRCA 1780 78cm high, 49cm wide, 38cm deepCondition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions comensurate with age and use. Some old chips and splits. There are additional dark ring marks to the topThe lower drawer has had lid for commode fitting removed and the drawer itself has had a sympathetic additional later timber lining added so it operates well as a drawer. Some fading to colour in areas which could easily be improved. The item is constructed from high quality mahogany. The surface is original and the colour and patina fair and depth of colour could be improved by simple treatment. Old horizontal splits to the sides and rear panels have been previously disguised by filler. The appearance of this could be relatively easily improved by a restorer also. There is a slight bow on both doors due to warping. The concealed castors add a nice touch of quality and practicality.one pierced spandrel bracket from one leg is cleaning broken in one place and detached but present in the drawer. This can easily be re-attached by careful gluing. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition. Condition Report Disclaimer

'In 1754 Black received the M.D. with his now historic dissertation, De humore acido a cibis orto, et magnesia alba'. The next year, before the Philosophical Society of Edinburgh, he descibed the chemical experiments, condiderably expended, that had formed the second half of his dissertaion. This classic paper - the chief basis of Black's scientific renown and his only major publication - appeared in 1756 in the Societies Essays and Observations under the title "Experiments Upon Magnesia Alba, Quickline, and some other Alcaline Substances." Here Black demonstrated that an aeriform fluid that he called "fixed air" (carbon dioxide gas) was a quantative constituant of such alkaline substances as Magnesia Alba (italics), lime potash, and soda' (Dictionary of Scientific Biography 2:173). Of legendary rarity this dissertation is all but unobtainable with only handfuls of copies in institutions. Copac locates 10 copies and ESTC T9090 locates 7 copies in the UK including one at the Radcliffe, Science Library, Oxford University, not listed by Copac. ESTC locates one further copy in the Netherlands and three in north America. 'There is perhaps no other instance of a graduation thesis so weighted with significant novelty as Black's 'De humore acido a cibis orto, et magnesia alba' presented to the Faculty 11 June, 1754. Developed and perfected, it was read before the Medical Society of Edinburgh, 5 June, 1755, published in the 2nd volume of 'Essays and Observations' (1756), with the title, 'Experiments upon Magnesia Alba, Quickline, and some other Alkaline Substances,' and subsequently twice reprinted 1777 and 1782' (Dictionary of National Biography, as written by William Osler)
Gillray (James). A New Map of England & France. The French Invasion - or - John Bull Bombarding the Bum Boats, H. Humphrey, 1793 [but H. G. Bohn edition of 1847], uncoloured etched caricature, slight marginal fraying but not affecting the image, 350 x 255 mm, together with Fighting for the Dunghill - or - Jack Tar settling Buonaparte, H. The king is shown defecating on France; his faeces gradually evolving into warships that threaten the coast of northern France. One of Gillray's most vulgar cartoons, that captures the belligerent spirit of 'John Bull' in the face of the tyranny of France and Napoleon.

GENERAL JAMES WOLFE A rare Worcester cylindrical mug, c.1760, printed in black with a half-length portrait flanked by prints of Mars and Fame, a putto above with a laurel diadem, 12cm. Following the success at Louisburg in the Seven Years War, William Pitt made Wolfe commander of the force that sailed up the St Lawrence River. On 13th September 1759, in a surprise attack, he took Quebec from the French. Mortally wounded by three musket shots he survived long enough to learn of victory, one that was to lead to the collapse of French power in the new world. For this Wolfe was accorded lasting fame in history. Provenance: ex Pares Wilson Collection, sold Bonhams, 9th Sep 2009, Lot 91; and G W Capell Collection, sold Sotheby's, 16th February 1965, Lot 91. PRINCE FERDINAND OF BRUNSWICK A rare Longton Hall porcelain mug, c.1760, printed in black with a portrait titled 'The Illustrious Prince Ferdinand of Brunswick', flanked by vignettes of military trophies inscribed 'Minden', and a battle scene, a rim crack and filled rim chip, 9.8cm. At the Battle of Minden on 1st August 1759, Field Marshall Ferdinand of Brunswick won a decisive victory against the French, thus ending the imminent threat to Hanover. For this he was awarded the Order of the Garter by George II and a vote of thanks by the British Parliament. Provenance: Simon Spero Exhibition 2000, item 6 and ex Frank Arnold collection.
GEORGE III A very rare small Worcester mug, c.1761, the baluster body printed in purple with a half-length profile portrait of the monarch looking to dexter, wearing an elaborate jacket pinned with the Garter Star, flanked by a vignettes of Britannia and Fame, a long restored crack and filled rim chip, 8.6cm. Cf. Simon Spero Exhibition 2000, item 4 for a similar mug.
MARQUESS OF GRANBY A large Worcester mug, c.1761, the baluster body printed in black by Robert Hancock with a portrait of Granby flanked by vignettes of Fame and Mars, a putto in flight above with a diadem of laurels, 15cm. This engraving was adapted by Hancock from one by Richard Houston published in 1760 and after a portrait by Joshua Reynolds. General John Manners, Marquess of Granby, commanded the British contingent fighting under the Duke of Brunswick against the French from 1759 until the end of the Seven Years War, including the Battles of Minden and Warburg. At the latter, a corps of 20,000 French was routed. In the charge Granby lost his hat and wig, hence this depiction bald-headed. This was an incident that caused much amusement in the ranks and led to the expression 'Going at it bald-headed'! Provenance: formerly the Joseph M. Handley Collection. Cf. Simon Spero Exhibition 2000, item 7.
1763 CIDER ACT A creamware teapot and cover, c.1763-66, the ovoid body painted in black with the inscription 'No Cyder Act', the reverse with 'Apples at Liberty' within red scrolling cartouches, incised with a trellis band, set with crabstock spout and double strap handle, the cover with a floral knop, 16.6cm across. (2) To pay for the ever-mounting cost of the Seven Years War, Lord Bute introduced the Cider Bill in 1763. Such was its unpopularity, especially in the West Country, that he was forced to resign later that same year in favour George Grenville. Grenville was successful in defeating an opposition motion to repeal the bill the following year, however it was finally repealed in 1766. This style of painting is often associated with the workshops of Robinson and Rhodes of Leeds but recent excavations in Staffordshire have produced similar styles of painting to that of the Leeds workshop. Provenance: with Sampson & Horne, March 2007, item 07/36 in their catalogue.
A Beswick porcelain Mountie figure. Height 20 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The head of the Mountie has been off and restored. Five Chinese wooden vase stands. Largest diameter 23 cm, (all as found). CONDITION REPORT: The two stands with the pierced rims are badly damaged and have losses. The small flat circular stand raised on four feet is in good condition. A carnival model organ and drum automaton, fitted with electric light bulbs and painted in bright enamel colours, with tin roof. Height 102 cm, width 107 cm, depth 50 cm. CONDITION REPORT: When the item is plugged in the majority of the lights do light up. The electric motor also runs and this operates the two drums and the drummer. We have not had any sound out of the organ but we do not really know how this operates. The speaker at the rear of the cabinet does have wiring to it and there is a Jack plug on the end of this wiring. Perhaps the sound would have been from a recording rather than through the actual organ itself. We think that this is probably the case.

However, if it does not bear a British import mark it is treated as foreign wares. It is likely that the dishes are American and that the marks 'STERLING' are reliable. The initial 'D' is to the rim of twelve plates, the initial 'N' is to the centre of the single plate. The plates show signs of use, there are some dents and minor surface scratching throughout.

13th-7th century BC. A bronze dagger comprising a lentoid-section leaf-shaped blade with rounded tip, integral waisted hilt and slender handle with crescentic pommel; accompanied by a custom-made display stand. See Legrain, L., Luristan Bronzes In The University Museum, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, 1934, pl.XI item 42, for similar. 1 kg total, 33cm (13"). Property of a Surrey, UK, gentleman; formerly in a private Orange County, California, USA collection; acquired before 1991. In Luristan, daggers and dirks produced up until the second half of the 2nd millennium BC were simple bronze or copper blades, comprising tangs attached with rivets to a handle made of a degradable organic material. However, in rare cases such as this example, the handles were metallic, and have thus survived to the present day. Fine condition.
