A strung fruitwood ell rule, 19th century, Continental, with boxwood inserts, turned handle and ivory mounts, 73.5cm long Provenance: The Collection of the late Rosemary and Theo Cutting. Until the early 19th century, the ell rule was a common measure for cloth. In England, it was officially 1.25 yards long, however, this example is shorter. ˑ An original Oxford Pad notepad in which Freddie Mercury has handwritten a partial track list for Queen's 1974 album 'Sheer Heart Attack'. This list differs from the final track list. A stamp has been applied on the front cover from the RMS Queen Elizebeth 2 with the words 'posted on board maiden transatlantic voyage' and the date 2nd May 1969. Freddie has written in black ballpoint pen and it reads: Brighton Rock Killer Queen Bring Back The Leroy Brown She Makes Me In the Lap of the Gods Stone Cold Crazy In the Lap of the Gods... Revisited Now I'm Here' The notepad measures 20.3cm x 25.5cm (8 inches x 10 inches). Two thirds of the back card cover has been cut away, the reverse bears notes in an unknown hand. The condition of the page is very good. The catalogue was for the sale in New York on the 11th November 1987 and the invitation is for a reception and private viewing at New Bond Street, London on the 19th October 1987. In the book 'Freddie Mercury: A World Of His Own' which was sold by Sotheby's to accompany their Freddie Mercury auction in September 2023, they note that 'Freddie did not make purchases haphazardly. The collections within Garden Lodge were meticulously assembled... Freddie's collecting was shaped by private visits to auction house exhibitions and an obsession with the auction catalogues that Peter (Peter Freestone, Freddie's assistant) would source for him. "I would always check what auctions were coming up and the things that would interest him. I would then get the catalogue so he could have a look - carpets, furniture, crystal, artworks, everything. He'd mark up the lots he wanted and send me to bid. On the morning of the auction, I would take his tea up at nine o'clock and his cheque book with me, for him to sign, so I could go later on and bid for him." A Christmas card that has been cut in half and then glued onto a piece of black paper. The inside section of the card has been signed by the Queen. Freddie Mercury and John Deacon have signed their first names only in blue pen. Brian May has autographed his full name in blue pen and Roger Taylor has signed his full name in black pen. Each section measures 12cm x 9.5cm (11.75 inches x 3.75 inches. The black paper measures 18cm x 23cm (7 inches x 9 inches). The condition is excellent. An original promotional banner for the 1978 single ‘My Way’ which was sung by Sex Pistols’ bassist Sid Vicious. The single was taken from the soundtrack album ‘The Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle’ from the film of same name which was released in 1979. The banner measures 71.5cm x 12cm (28 inches x 4.75 inches). A bottle of rare Rothschild Chateau Lafite 1er Grand Cru Classe Paulliac 1983 vintage wine housed in a wooden box bearing the 1995 Queen album title ‘Made In Heaven’. The wine was given to guests who attended the launch party of the album on the 20th September. It is still wrapped in the original purple Domaines Barons De Rothschild tissue paper and comes with a insert card which reads: ‘Chateau Lafite 1er Grand Cru Classe, Paulliac. Chateau Lafite is one of the five top Chateaux in Bordeux. The 1983 vintage is considered to be rich, powerful, and one of the finest available. It is no lightweight so do not serve with a gentle meal. We feel that the grandeur of this wine is the perfect compliment to mark the closing chapter of one of rock’s most legendary careers. Just as wine connoisseurs say that it is a remarkable vintage, a classic in its own right, so the same shall be said of the new Queen album 'Made In Heaven.’ The box measures 11cm x 35cm x 10.7cm (4.3 inches x 13.8 inches x 4.2 inches). There is some tearing to the tissue paper along with some staining where it appears the bottle may have leaked. The condition of the label is excellent. The condition of the bottle is very good plus. ˑ A sheet of notepaper taken from a promotional ‘Something Out Of The Ordinary’ Elektra notepad on which Freddie Mercury has handwritten various notes in pencil. They relate to the recording and mixing of Queen's 1974 'Sheer Heart Attack' album and list various dates at Trident Studios, AIR Studios and Wessex Studios. The mixing of the album took place at Trident Studios between the 16th and 20th September, two backing tracks and some guitar overdubs were recorded at AIR Studios between the 16th and 21st September and the majority of the overdubs and one backing track were recorded at Wessex Studios between the 20th and 27th September. As all these dates overlapped the group hired a driver to deliver tapes from the Wessex and AIR Studios to Trident Studios. The sheet of notepaper measures 14.5cm x 21.8cm (5.7 inches x 8.5 inches). There are light creases to the top and bottom right corners. The condition is very good plus. No size label is present but the robe measures 66cm (26 inches) armpit to armpit and 139cm (54.6 inches) from the back of the neck to the hem. There is a 2.5cm split to the left underarm seam and a 7cm split to the binding at the back of the neck along with some fraying to the fabric. There is fraying and tearing to the ties. There is staining and discolouration to various areas of the robe. The condition is good. The text printed inside the card humorously reads ‘Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from the Preening, Pouting, Posing, Posturing Old Tart’. The card was specially commissioned by Freddie Mercury to send to friends. A few signed examples of the cards have surfaced over the years but unsigned ones have not been on the open market before. The card measures 17.2cm x 21.5cm (6.8 inches x 8.5 inches). The condition is near mint. Provenance: originally part of a lot in the Freddie Mercury: A World Of His Own, Crazy Little Things 2 sale held at Sotheby’s New Bond Street, London on 13th September 2023.
