EARLY TWENTIETH CENTURY DIAMOND NECKLET of floral design, with a large central flower and two floral drops, set with old European and rose cut diamonds, unmarked, on a chain, in original fitted boxThere are many jewellery designs that were highly popular from the Victorian period through to Edwardian times and beyond. These easily recognisable and desirable designs came in many variations and were occasionally set with imitation stones in base metals to suit lower budgets. Many of those items that survive and appear at auction are from the transitional era c.1890 to 1910 and include the star motif and floral or rosette motifs. These are typically English designs that also became popular in the United States. The fashion for particular shapes and designs in jewellery from this period is best identified and tracked using jewellery catalogues. These were printed documents with all of the designs by a certain jeweller for a given season. These catalogues were produced by jewellers from as early as the 18th century and feature drawn designs rather than photographic images of actual items. The catalogues were a selling tool used by jewellers either in their shop or in clients' homes. Buyers could then select an item from one of these catalogues to buy or have made on request. This beautiful Edwardian diamond set necklet is lot 5 in The Jewellery Auction on 7th August 2016, estimated at £500-800.
