ASSIGNMENT: PARISItalian 4-Fogli (53.5" x 76")Fine+ on Linen; Artwork by Anselmo Ballester Columbia, 1953Despite displaying pinholes around and within the image and having a previously detached lower right corner, this remarkable Ballester poster remains a collector's item with four tax stamps intact. Printed in two panels, it is professionally linen-backed and presents very well. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, September 12th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on September 13th.
THE EVIL DEADOne Sheet (27" x 41"); Silk Screen Alternate Poster Signed by Bruce Campbell and Director Sam Raimi (JSA COA)Very Fine- Folded; Artwork by Mike Ditz New Line, 1983This might be the most significant modern horror poster in existence! This special poster was printed exclusively to promote the first-ever 16mm screenings of "Evil Dead" at select theaters in 1980. This poster was created before the film was distributed nationwide in 1981. The poster is printed on a thicker paper stock using a silk screen. It features the iconic artwork by Mike Ditz and the film's original title, "Evil Dead." This is a pre-wide release poster from one of the independent or film festival screenings that Evil Dead underwent before its wide release by New Line Cinema. Notably, this poster bears the New Line logo, indicating it was likely used after the film's acquisition for distribution in early January 1983 but before its wide release in mid-April 1983. Given the few screenings during that period, this poster probably originates from one of two New York shows in May (as indicated by a Variety ad featuring the same artwork). Additionally, it's worth noting that the title is simply "Evil Dead," the name used before New Line rebranded it to "The Evil Dead" and switched to the now-iconic hand-art by M. Skilsky. The scarcity of this early, pre-wide release poster is truly remarkable! Signed by Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi (Dallas Fort Worth, TX) in 2019. From a Private Collector. This item stands as a unique piece in modern cinema. It is an exceptionally rare release poster of the horror classic, produced by Renaissance Pictures. The poster shows typical signs of wear, such as a small one-inch tear at the bottom center and a minor v-shaped crease near the lower right corner. On the back, "Evil Dead" is written in pencil.Sam Raimi's controversial and hugely successful debut: a low-budget but hugely inventive horror romp, in which five students - including Bruce Campbell's Ash Williams - accidentally unleash a malevolent supernatural force while staying at a remote cabin in the woods. The film spawned a series, still going today with the recently released "Evil Dead Rise."This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, September 12th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on September 13th.
SUSPICIONInsert (14" x 36")Very Fine- on Paper RKO, 1941This vibrant insert has been professionally paper-backed to correct the three folds in the poster. Although there is some surface paper loss on the verso, it does not affect the image on the front of the poster. The item now displays beautifully. The film is noted for the controversy between Alfred Hitchcock and the studio about the film's ending- would Cary Grant murder Joan Fontaine or not? Fontaine was rarely better than her Oscar-winning performance, and Grant's edgy portrayal was equally fine. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, September 13th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on September 12th.
I MARRIED A WITCHWindow Card (14" x 22")Very Fine United Artists, 1942This charming window card exhibits minimal edge wear. Three strips of cloth mounting tape are affixed to the back along the top edge. The colors are still vivid, rendering the card an attractive display item.Veronica Lake, following her success in Sullivan's Travels and This Gun for Hire, reached a career peak with her performance alongside Fredric March in the humorous story of a witch who unwittingly falls for the man she aimed to hex. This quintessential romantic comedy stands out as one of Lake's finest roles and also served as the muse for the beloved TV series Bewitched. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, September 12th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. CONFESSIONS OF A NAZI SPYOne Sheet (27" x 41")Fine- on Linen Warner Bros., 1939The item exhibited fold wear, crossfold separations, minor paper loss, chips in the lower left corner and borders, and a tear along the top vertical fold. All these issues have been expertly addressed through professional restoration.Brilliantly directed by Anatole Litvak and based on a series of articles by FBI agent Leon G. Turrou, "Confessions of a Nazi Spy" tells the story of FBI agent Ed Renard (played by Edward G. Robinson) and his investigations into pre-World War II espionage activities in the United States. The film is notable in many respects. It was the first anti-Nazi film from a major American studio and was banned in many European and Latin American countries. The film also accurately anticipates Germany's attacks on Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Norway. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, September 12th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. CHINATOWNOriginal Pencil Artwork for Billboard and Color Rendering (Artboard 1: 12.5" x 16.5" &Artboard 2: 15.5" x 15.5")Very Fine; Artwork by Jim Pearsall Paramount, 1974When searching for Jim Pearsall on Google, you can find a movie poster quote that says "Jim Pearsall was a one-hit wonder, but what a hit it was!" While Jim Pearsall worked at the now-defunct movie marketing company, Diener Hauser Bates Advertising, he created the artwork for the 1974 film "Chinatown", which is considered one of the greatest movie posters of all time. Apart from the 1975 B-movie "Breakout" starring Charles Bronson, there are no other credited movie poster commissions for him.The collection includes two art boards for a Billboard Study. The first is an original piece measuring 12.5" x 16.5", created with graphite on tissue and mounted onto a thin artboard using tape. In the lower-left corner, there's a credit block piece measuring 1.5" x 4.5" attached to the tissue, crediting "written by Robert Towne" along with the studio credit. A minor .25" tear in the lower left corner does not affect the artwork. Over time, the tissue has yellowed, yet it still prominently displays a strong pencil illustration of the main characters, Nicholson and Dunaway, and the film's title. This original artwork is likely the work of Jim Pearsall. The second item is a 15.5" x 15.5" color print mounted on an illustration board. Despite significant wear from production, the central art image remains largely unblemished. The artist's signature, "JP" (Jim Pearsall), is in the print in the lower right corner.Jack Nicholson gives one of his best performances as private detective Jake Gittes in Roman Polanski's complex and murky noir mystery, which won an Oscar for its screenplay, by Robert Towne. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, September 12th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on September 13th.
ELVIS PRESLEYWindow Card and Title Lobby Card (14" x 22" & 11" x 14")Very Fine MGM, 1957This group features two items from the films of the legendary Elvis Presley. Offered is a window card from Jailhouse Rock (1957), which features a beautifully-rendered portrait of the handsome star against a bright pink background. It is unfolded and unrestored with small random creases in the borders. The other item is a title lobby card from Love Me Tender (1956), which is also unrestored and exhibits edge toning, border creases and signs of handling.Three films redefined childhood for those experiencing it in the 1950s: The Wild One starring Marlon Brando, Rebel Without a Cause starring James Dean, and Jailhouse Rock starring Elvis Presley in just his third film. Elvis plays a version of himself allergic to pretense, providing many of the film's most enjoyable moments. The titular musical number remains among the greatest in silver screen history. Nonetheless, when his co-star Judy Tyler died in a tragic car crash before the film was released, Elvis refused to see it.This lot will be auctioned on Friday, September 13th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVESSix Sheet (79" x 78")Very Fine Folded RKO, 1946Large-format posters for many films are exceedingly rare as few have survived. Intended to be pasted on walls and billboards, they often disappeared over time after their use. Adapted from the novella Glory For Me, Robert E. Sherwood delivers a staggering Oscar-winningscreenplay that tells a story as relevant today as it was in 1946. With innovative photography by Greg Toland, the filmreceived seven Academy Awards and was the year's highest-grossing film. An additional honorary award was given toHarold Russell, who delivered a devastating performance and was an authentic World War Two amputee who lost bothhands in an explosion. Provenance:From the private collection of a professional sportsman and commentator. Maison Wurtel was founded by Guillaume-Ferdinand Wurtel in around 1837 when he advertised as working from 38-40 Passage Vivienne, Paris. Three years later he was listed in a trade directory as a horological maker and seller offering picture clocks as well as a supplier of concave glasses. In 1841 a magazine, 'La Presse', recommended 'La Maison Wurtel' to their readers informing them that they can buy watches, table clocks, picture clocks, music boxes, alarm clocks and 'objects of fantasy'. In 1856 they exhibited at the 'Exposition of Delepine of Paris' but unfortunately were positioned within the scientific instrument section to the bafflement of visitors. Maison Wurtel were known to have sourced their clock movements form Japy Freres and the musical mechanism within the present lot can be attributed to Auguste L'Epee of Saint-Suzanne, Doubs, France (who worked from 1839 until the end of the century). The Angelus mechanism is a particularly rare feature which traditionally served to accompany the recital of the Angelus prayer in Roman Catholicism. Condition Report: The clock, striking and angelus mechanisms are all in relatively clean original working condition with the various levers and detents present. The musical mechanism is also in relatively clean working condition with no visible losses to the teeth or noticeable corrosion issues. The canvas is in good condition with no visible tears or holes of noticeable repairs. The frame is in fine condition with good gilding throughout. The pine back box has some slight wear/bumps (most noticeable to the back corners) as well as other relatively minor age related faults - otherwise is in very good original condition.Clock is complete with pendulum and two winding keys. Couaillet Freres are discussed by Leigh Extence in his article The Carriage Clock Makers of Saint-Nicolas-d'Aliermont published in National Association of Watch & Clock Collectors Bulletin, 2020; where they are described as being one of the most prolific makers of carriage clocks operating from the horological town of Saint-Nicolas-d'Aliermont (near Dieppe) during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1885 Armand Couaillet was employed by the prominent maker Albert Villon, but in 1892 he and his brothers Denis and Ernest set up their own workshops in the centre of the town as Couaillet freres. They increased the size of the concern when buying the house and workshops of Delépine-Barrois across the road in 1912. Condition Report: The movement is reasonably clean; the going train is currently running however the strike train is not presently operational and is jamming the hands. The spring is sound and there is no obvious visible faults hence probably due to gummed-up oil. As catalogued the escapement platform is a replacement. The dial is in fine condition with only very slight mellowing to the silvering of the chapter ring evident. The case is in very good original condition with no visible chips to the glasses. The front frieze has slight distortion (waviness) to the enamelled section and a couple of very small losses to the enamel otherwise faults are very much limited to a few very small enamel losses and slight patchy oxidation/mellowing to the finish. The case has incomplete carrying strap and wear around the lip of the base most noticeably to the rear as well as general overall light rubbing/scuffing/wear. The interior has some degradation/splitting to the silk lining otherwise is generally sound. Clock has a winding key. Condition Report Disclaimer
