Lot 1170

A composition figure of a Scotsman in Highland dress taking snuff, probably a tobacconists advert. Height 138 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: In our opinion this item is 19th century. The figure is a hollow cast composition and not wood with gesso. It mostly likely has been repainted at some point in its life but not recently. You will note from the images that the right hand little finger and ring finger are missing and the middle finger is split through. There are small areas of paint missing to the rear feathers on his headdress. The yellow lines on his tartan sash, kilt and socks look fresh but again probably not done within the last decade or so.

The door is not warped and there is no cracked glass. The lock and key are present. The lock is a little loose in its surround and whilst the door does close the lock is not operating correctly. There are some scratches around the lock escutcheon. The base and legs are all in good order with only minor imperfections as one would expect form an item of this age. The cloth lining to the shelves is a little worn in places but not significantly.

Width 152 cm, height to top of upstand 93 cm, depth 46 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The dresser is in extremely good condition. It is of good colour. The top is in very good order with only very minor marks to the polish particularly on the prouder sections of the adzed surface. This is a very minor criticism. The side panels are all in extremely good order. We can see no shrinkage cracks. The same comments apply to the front doors. All drawers are in good condition and run smoothly. The feet are in good order with only minor marks as one would expect from an item of this age. We believe the piece to date from the mid 1950's.

An early 19th century brass barrelled flintlock blunderbuss by H. Nock, with sprung loaded bayonet, ramrod and brass mounts marked "H. Nock" to the lockplate. Just above the rear housing for the ram rod there is a 1cm x 5mm plug in the forend. Our gun specialist doubts whether the ram rod is in fact original to the item. The item appears to be in reasonable good order throughout.

Lot 271

A pair of Japanese cloisonne vases, height 26 cm. CONDITION REPORT: One vase has a large thumb nail chip to the cloisonné showing through to the metal body. The body feels rough throughout but there are no signs of any faults and the roughness is caused by poor firing. The yellow interior is pitted. Its partner vase appears to be in good order however, on close inspection there is a 4 mm square blister to one of the bladed panels. The body to this item is also rough to the touch. The yellow enamel on the interior rim is also very pitted.

Lot 1158

A Swiss "Black Forest" carved wood bear novelty ink well, late 19th century, with coloured glass inset eyes, height 15 cm, together with a carved "Black Forest" standing bear pen holder, height 11.5 cm. If looking face on at the bear there are three 5 cm long fine hairline cracks to the neck. There is a crack to the rear centre of the head to the rear hinge. There is a further crack to the rear from the base of the hinge through to the base of the inkwell. This crack is very fine. There is a very small chip to the underside of the bear jaw located on the lower half of the body. There are no engravings or personal inscriptions on this item. The standing bear pen stand appears to be free from any splits. The tips of the ears are slightly smoothed over but this has been done for some time. There is a small fingernail light circular mark to the top of the base most likely where pens have stood. Again there are no personal inscriptions or engravings on that item.

Lot 1276

A German carved wooden owl form clock, the eyes indicating the time, height 19 cm, and a wooden bracket (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The clock ticks when wound. The colour of the wood is uniform throughout. There is a small nick to the rear of the head. It is stamped to the rear base GES. GESCH Germany. When looking directly at it there are white marks around the dial on the left eye. This would appear to be the fixing adhesive for the dial (Plaster of Paris) has been damaged in some way. There is a small slightly large than pinhead size white mark to the front body just below the beak where it would appear the stained varnish has been rubbed or knocked off but overall the item is in nice condition. The accompanying bracket has had the right hand corner frieze glued back on. The centre right supporting bracket has a top to bottom split. There is an ink mark to the centre of the shelf. The centre left and extreme left supporting brackets appear to have been off sometime in their life as there are traces of glue but both appear to be free from any chips or cracks.

The item in question is a possibly unique VHS tape featuring footage shot by renowned artist Jim Lambie at gigs circa 1980s, interspersed with footage from 60s/70s/80s. Of most interest here surely are the recordings made at Edinburgh's Hoochie Koochie club, of Primal Scream (I Love You, I Want You, Aftermath, Imperial, Tomorrow Ends Today, Crystal Crescent), Jasmine Minks, Weather Prophets, The Shop Assistants and others as well as crowd footage from Glasgow's Splash club. We say it's likely unique as detailed in a handwritten letter of provenance (sold with the lot, from John Martin) is news that artist Jim Lambie has lost all other recordings.
