Cranston & Veitch. Documents to do with the liquidation of the Moodie estate of Melsetter in Orkney, 1816. Benjamin Moodie was obliged to liquidate his estate Melsetter, Orkney, in 1816, prior to his emigration to the Cape Colony. There are two documents relating to this. 1. ALS letter to him from Cranston & Veitch, attorneys?, on a copy of the printed notice advising creditors of his executing a Trust Deed authorising an immediate and unqualified sale of his Orkney estate. Two sides written, one printed, folded to 190mm high x 115mm wide. complete with no major loss, but a significant vertical tear (or cut) to the front which does not impair legibility of the text. thus overall condition less than good. 2. A handwritten Memorandum of his estate in Melsetter, Orkney. This is an extended analysis of the pros and cons and finances of the estate which was to be put under the hammer. Appearing not quite complete & lacking some figures, this interesting document was intended to acquaint prospective purchasers with the opportunities offered by the property. Eleven sides written on three sheets folded to 320mm high x 200mm wide. Well handled, frayed to edges, folds parting, but no major loss or tears affecting text legibility. Generally in good condition. Anonymous Songs Of The Veld - Rare Boer War Volume Small 8vo. This first edition is an extremely rare volume of poems which first appeared in `The New Age`, a liberal and anticolonialist periodical, and published in book form in 1902. The poems leaked war time information about the atrocities committed by the British army on the civilian population, to the outside world. Those poems written by South Africans were anonymous to prevent prosecution under martial law. The South African contributors include C.Louis Leipoldt (his first published poem), Alice Greene, Betty Molteno, Anna Purcell, Dr. F.C.Kolbe and others. The book was published for the 304 subscribers listed in it, and there were probably not many more copies printed as the sentiments expressed in it were hated by the British and it was banned in South Africa. It is thus one of the very scarcest Boer War items in first edition. It is not in the Hackett Bibliography of South African War Books. It was republished in 2008 by Marthinus van Bart, jounalist for `Die Burger`. The reprint is done beautifully with a well researched commentary on the background to the book and it`s various contributors. Van Bart located 2 copies of the first edition in the archives of UCT and Stellenbosch University (the latter used for the reprint) but was unable to find one in the private sector. This copy is bound in two tone leather and is in very nice condition. The front hinge is slightly cracked but firm and there are a few very neat small pencil annotations mainly to identify the poets. A most desirable item. Very Good London New Age Press 1902 Reserve: $800 Click here to view further details and to bid
Ernest Cole HOUSE OF BONDAGE House of Bondage By Ernest Cole (A South African Black Man Exposes in His Own Pictures and Words the Bitter Life of His Homeland Today). This is a landmark book in South African photojournalism. Cole fled South African in 1966 to publish this remarkable photo-essay which documents apartheid. The book was banned in South Africa but created a sensation abroad. An exhibition of his work and the photos in this book has recently been mounted by the Hasselblad Foundation and was shown at the Johannesburg Art Gallery and abroad. `House of Bondage` is now a collector`s item. It is one of only three South African books included in the massive work on `The Photo Book` by Parr and Badger (the other two being by David Goldblatt). This copy is very good in very good dust jacket. Some shelf wear on the book and jacket, corners bumped, some signs of use. Overall a lovely copy. 1921, 50c. pale green, handstamped with three-lines "Servicio Postal/Aéreo de Colombia/PANAMA" boxed cachet, unused with original gum. After the Gonzalo Mejía experiment in New York, a further attempt was made at the SCADTA Agency in Panama, where few examples of the first and second issues received this special cachet and were sold in 1921. This issue is considered as a pre-consular experiment. Corner crease at bottom left corner of absolutely no importance for this unique item, the only recorded example of this value with this handstamp. One of the most remarkable rarities of the SCADTA issues. Cert. P.F., signed Sanabria and Kessler. Sanabria 46. Ex Philip G. Cole and Eugenio Gebauer.
1921, "$ 20 c" on 50c. green, inverted surcharge, together with 50c. green without surcharge, both used on commercial cover front, not exceeding 60 grams, from Bogotá to Medellín, endorsed "Por hidroavión", each cancelled by three-lines "Sociedad Colombo-Alemana/De/Transportes Aéreos" handstamp, and National Post 3c. (3), tied by 17.10.1921 datestamp on arrival. Each franking paid its corresponding triple rate. The overall tone spots and imperfections at top are of no importance for a unique item. Used to Illustrate this stamp in the Colomphil catalogue by Cruz & Bortfeldt, as well as in the Gebauer's & Londoño's handbook on page 57, as this is the only known example of this stamp known; the fact that this item also shows a non-surcharged 50c. stamp adds a further degree of rarity for its combination. Cert. Bortfeldt. Colomphil 7. Ex Augusto Peinado.
1921, "$ 030 c", violet surcharge on 50c. pale green, vertical pair and diagonal half used as 15c. on large commercial envelope to New York carried on the 27 October Flight from Bogotá to Barranquilla, which was completed by the "Colombia", with the SCADTA franking, amounting 75c. for a weight of 40 grams, tied by "Sociedad Colombo-Alemana/De/Transportes Aéreos" three-line handstamp, whereas the national postage of 3c. (2), also paying the 40 grams fee for a double-rated business mail, was cancelled by "Agencia Postal Despacho Exterior" c.d.s. of Barranquilla in October. Minor imperfections are of not importance for this exceptional rarity. Illustrated in both Kessler's and Gebauer handbooks dedicated to the Colombian airmails. Eugenio Gebauer described in his "The Air Post of Colombia" book this cover, together with the other three "American Woolen Products Company" covers -also bearing cut-off adhesives to represent a reduced denomination, and all included in this Spink Investphila sale- as "THE GREATEST FIND IN SCADTA STAMPS", emphasizing the fact that these items are commercial correspondences and each one unique. Of these four covers, this item is to be considered as the most important. An extraordinary and unique franking exhibiting a bisect of the provisional surcharged issues. The fact that this item represents a commercial mail enhances and confirms its high degree of importance. One of the greatest gems of Colombian aerophilately. Colomphil 8b; Scott C24. Ex Philip G. Cole, Eugenio Gebauer and Debby Friedman.
1921, "$ 30 c", violet surcharge on 50c. pale green, two-thirds showing only a fraction of the surcharge, used together with a not overprinted 50c. pale green on October 1921 cover to New York flown to Barranquilla by the "Colombia", each tied by three-line SCADTA handstamp covering the down-river 70c. rate per 45 grams, and the required National Post 3c. (3) tied by Barranquilla large c.d.s. Illustrated on page 25 and page 49 of Kessler's and Gebauer's handbooks of air post in Colombia (see also previous lot). An extraordinary and unique usage of this adhesive, being part of the four covers defined by Eugenio Gebauer as the "the greatest find in SCADTA stamps" (all offered in this sale). We would like to remark, once more, the importance of the fact that this is a commercial correspondence and the exceptional nature of a bisect-usage in the provisional surcharged issues. An exhibition item of great calibre. Signed Rendon. Colomphil 8 (var); Scott C24. Ex Philip G. Cole, Thomas A. Matthews, Eugenio Gebauer and Debby Friedman.
1921, "VALOR 10 CENTAVOS" (featuring inverted "L" for "1"), and "VALOR 30 Ctvos - S.C.A.T.A." surcharges, each applied on 50c. green and both used together with 50c. without surcharge on small piece, cancelled by blue "Sociedad Colombo Alemana/Transportes Aéreos/Girardot". Illustrated on page 7 of the Colomphil catalogue by Santiago Cruz and Dieter Bortfeld. Slight crease at upper right of little significance for this item. An extraordinary and unique combination franking featuring two different surcharged stamps and one example without surcharge; one has to consider that these surcharges were applied in different localities at Girardot (350 stamps) and Neiva (500 stamps). Colomphil 2c, 10. Scott C18, C22.
1921, "c 30" surcharge on 50c. green, franking a cover from Bogotá to New York via Barranquilla, cancelled by three "Sociedad Colombo-Alemana/De/Transportes Aéreos" handstamp, additionally franked with "Correos Nacionales" 2c. pair featuring bisect at left, thus paying the 3c. national mail only, being insufficiently franked for external correspondence. Two tears to envelope at top and imperfections in upper margin of adhesive not affecting the design, which in no way detract from this unique item. Illustrated on page 40 of the Colomphil catalogue (2004 edition) by Santiago Cruz and Dieter Bortfeldt. The example known of this surcharge (only stamp and cover recorded), a significant rarity of these provisional issues. Cert. Bortfeldt and P.F. Colomphil 14.
1923, May 1 Postcard from Puerto Colombia franked by 15c. blue, with small part overlapping the edge of the card at right, cancelled by very fine two-lines "Pto. Colombia" handstamp in violet, showing sender's cachet of the SADTA's tourist office in centre, with c.d.s. on back, supposedly applied on arrival as the addressee's panel has been scratched, this being of little significance for this important item, representing one of only two usages recorded of this cancellation. Cert. Bortfeldt. Scott C13.
1921, Dec. 9. Cover from Bogotá to Barranquilla, being an interesting item addressed to Mr. Peter P. von Bauer, who was then General Manager of SCADTA, correctly franked by 30c. rose (negligible wrinkle at top left) with three-lines "Sociedad Colombo-Alemana/De/Transportes Aéreos" handstamp, plus national postage 3c. on 4c. cancelled at Barranquilla on December 12. Scott C15.
1922 ca. Large cover, opened for display and slightly reduced on three sides, from Medellín to New York, franked on back with 30c. rose, vertical strip of four, tied by two fine strikes of italic "Hidroavión" handstamp; paying the national postage, on front, with 3c. (4) cancelled by "Correspondencia Exterior" postmark. A visually impressive exhibition item, bearing a rare multiple of this stamp. Scott C15.
1856, Aug. 18. Cover from Valdivia to Santiago franked by Second London Printing 5c., ample even margins, being required to pay the up to 5 adarmes rate, showing neat "VALDIVIA." oval handstamp -this item represents its earliest recorded use- in red alongside, with the stamp being very probably tied on arrival by mute cancel. One of two covers known, bearing different frankings, with this oval postmark in red. Ex Menéndez.
1920, 10c. "Tilted Plane", cut to shape or slightly into at left, otherwise fresh with large margins, showing nearly complete strike of Barranquilla c.d.s. in violet of the National Post, clearly dated "14 Apr 1920", thus representing the Cartagena-Barranquilla Flight of 14 April 1920. Slight staining and imperfections at left, of no importance for this unique item. Of great significance: the only vignette recorded bearing the datestamp of 14 April, and consequently being the only recorded reference of this flight. Scott C4.
1920, 10c. "Flier in Plane Watching Biplane", cleanly cancelled by "CCNA/Cartagena" oval handstamp in violet on picture side of postcard from Cartagena to Barranquilla, dated 22 February, First Flight. Obverse showing 5c. National Post franking, thus being overpaid by 3 1/2 centavos, tied by "Correo Aéreo./Cartagena-Colombia", with Barranquilla receipt c.d.s. in centre. This is the scarcest vignette recorded on cover as only 14 items are known, of which seven are from this flight, with this item possessing the added significance of being a postcard, which was a postal artifact quite infrequently used with vignettes. Scott C5. Ex Augusto Peinado.
1920, 10c. "Flier in Plane Watching Biplane", a large margined example used on 17 October cover to Barranquilla, upfranked for the single rate with National Post 3c., both tied by "CCNA/Agencia Barranquilla" handstamp in purple and framed National Postal Agency datestamp in blue, showing "OCT 17" date. Three creases of which one passess through the vignette, without significance for this unqiue item. The pilot, Captain René Bazin, in a letter dated 18 June 1962, corroborated to have completed flights in October 1920: "During the month of October (1920) I have realized various flights over the mountains with twelve passengers". This is the only recorded cover which have survived from the flights in October -very few other vignettes on piece, exhibiting these cancellations, are also recorded (see lots 1004 & 1013)-. A very desirable gem of this issue representing a very late flight. Cert. Behr. Scott C5.
1920, 10c. "Plane at Rest; Pilot Foreground", ample balanced margins on First Flight cover, 22 February, from Cartagena to Barranquilla, cancelled by "CCNA/Cartagena" oval handstamp, showing manuscript dedication in French and signature by the pilot Captain René Bazin: "With great sympathy to Mr. Hernández in memory of the first airmail / 22-2-1920". The cover was additionally franked by 3c. of the National Postal Service tied by "Correo Aereo./Cartagena-Colombia." c.d.s. Some minor peripheral imperfections to cover and vignette with traces of red crayon, only mentioned for accuracy. The First Flight was succesfully completed by a Farman F.40 ("Cartagena") piloted by Capt. René Bazin. Two passengers, Mr. Guillermo Echevarría, Managing Director of the Compañía Colombiana de Navegación Aérea, and Mr. George Goupil, mechanic, accompanied the pilot on this historic flight which carried 4 kgs. of mail. The second scarcest vignette used on cover, with just 16 items known, five of which having been used in this flight; on the other hand, its greatest degree of rarity lies in the fact that this item is the only cover known bearing any vignette and displaying the signature of the pilot. An exhibition item of the utmost calibre, considered as one of the two most important covers of this issue and one of the gems of worldwide aerophilately. Scott C9.
1920, April 25. 10c. green and National Post 3c., both tied to piece by "Agencia Colombiana de Navegación Aérea/Oficina Central de Administración/25 Apr 1920/Barranquilla" oval handstamp in purple. Horizontal crease of no significance for a unique item. The only philatelic proof so far in existence of this flight. Scott C11.
1920, July 20. Cover, opened for diplay, from Cartagena to Barranquilla, franked on reverse with 10c. green tied by "CCNA/Cartagena" oval handstamp, paying the national postage with 3c. tied by "Correo Aéreo./Cartagena-Colombia." c.d.s., and "Recibo" large c.d.s. of Barraqnuilla on arrival. Some creases or wrinkles not detracting. The 20 July 1920 flight was to be completed by the Captain Fratoni from Cartagena to Barranquilla. Nevertheless, the plane crashed at Boca Grande near Cartagena, killing the pilot and the passenger Arturo Gerlein, and seriously injuring Alfredo Araujo. The mail recovered from this crash was sent by ordinary mail to destination. The importance of this item goes far beyond its rarity for exhibiting this exceedingly scarce vignette on cover, as this is one of only two covers which have survived from this plane crash, both being the only representation of crash mail in the early airmail issues of Colombian philately. Of great desirability and historic importance. Scott C11. Ex Jack C. Boonshaft.
1920, 10c. green, vertical pair from the upper left corner of the sheet, positions 1 / 7, showing two very fine strikes of "Compañía Colombiana de Navegación Aérea/Oficina Central de Administración DE OFICIO/Barranquilla" oval handstamp in violet, which was applied on official correspondence. Couple of tone spots and usual creasing of very little consequence. Illustrated on page 42 of "The Air Post of Colombia" by Eugenio Gebauer (the author speculates on the possibility this handstamp to be probably a surcharge). The only recorded item exhibiting this cancellation. Gebauer 12-13. Ex Philip G. Cole and Eugenio Gebauer.
