Three cast metal mechanical money banks. Notice from the the-saleroom.com: These items are listed on the basis they are illustrative of a bygone culture in which there were different social norms. We understand the potential controversy surrounding this type of item but believe that providing transparent information about historical context fosters greater understanding of our complex cultural history.
Inert non firing purported model of Davy Crockett’s “Old Betsy” Kentucky rifle by Franklin Mint. A percussion muzzle-loader with black octagonal barrel, fixed iron sights, black lock and hammer and set trigger. Woodwork in attractive walnut with arrows, stars and crescent inset decoration. Brass plaque on wood at breech “PRESENTED TO DAVID CROCKETT AT NASHVILLE TENN MAY 5 1822” and barrel has silver insert on top flat “Jas M Graham” presumably maker. Ornate brass patch-box to butt with Indian figure engraved. We believe original “Old Betsy” was a flintlock and 1822 is early for cap type percussion ignition but this item is stated to be a replica of the rifle on display at the Alamo and makes for an interesting piece of Texas history and a discussion piece. There appears to be evidence of a crack at the wrist, depth unknown, which may have been caused by falling from its wall display board at some time. Included is its display board with light brown wood frame, certificate and leaflet/booklet relating history. INERT NON-FIRING DISPLAY PIECE TO PRE-1870 DESIGN NO LICENCE REQUIRED BUT BUYER MUST BE OVER 18
A WW2 era NSDAP double sided car pennant.Of usual triangular form, with a white cotton selvage, and metal clips to each end of the rope.Applied to each side is a white roundel, with a separately stitched in place swastika.Somewhat unusually, both the white roundel and swastika have a painted surface over the cotton base fabric. No apparent makers or date marks.Provenance: acquired towards the end of WW2 by Lieutenant, later Captain D.B.Lynes of the 2nd S.A.S.Lt Lynes had served in Operation Keystone, and later Operation Archway. The item has remained in the family of Captain Lynes since it was first acquired.Approximately 36cm x 19cm.Condition: generally good. Some minor soiling from age and service, but nothing detrimental. The painted surface to the roundel shows a little tiny cracking to the surface when viewed under magnification, but again this is minor and not detrimental.
A fine WW2 era Deputy Lord Lieutenants’s tunic, hat and other accoutrements, as worn by Colonel Alan Cecil Tod O.B.E. T.D. To include: a scarlet woollen tunic with dark blue facings, silvered King’s crown buttons to the front, cuffs, and skirt, silver cord epaulettes with gold bullion Tudor rose motif (to indicate an English county Lieutenant), and matching trousers with red stripe to the legs. Accompanying the tunic is a black beaver skin bi-corn hat, with black velvet and silver cord detail, a silvered King’s crown button, and a detachable white and red feather plume. Also included are Col Tod’s High Sheriff’s beaver skin hat (dating from c.1939) with cut steel button and chain detail, plus, dark blue crushed velvet pantaloons with cut steel buttons, lace cravats, lace cuffs, 2 pairs of white leather gloves, cut steel High Sheriff’s shoe buckles, spurs, collar stiffeners, black fabric sword belt for a court sword, black stocks, and a painted storage trunk and painted hat tin. Notes: Captain Alan Cecil Tod served as part of the 4th West Lancashire Brigade, with his rank being noted as Captain Adjutant, and later Major. His medal entitlement was the 1915 Star, British War Medal, the Victory Medal with oak leaf, and the O.B.E which was issued in 1919. Major Tod later became a Colonel, and an entry appears in the London Gazette on January 30th 1939 stating that he was to become Deputy Lord Lieutenant. A further entry in the London Gazette from March 1939 states that he was to become Sheriff for the County Palatine of Lancaster. Colonel Tod also served in the Home Guard during WW2, and for his service he was granted the C.B.E in 1943. Condition: generally very good. The Deputy Lord Lieutenant’s tunic is in good order and appears to have had little use (the silvered buttons were still wrapped in tissue when we received the item). The buttons and silvered lace detail to the cuffs and skirt have tarnished with age, but are nevertheless intact. There is a very small area near the right epaulette where there is wear to the nap of the cloth (possible old moth tracking to the surface), but this is not a hole. Both beaver skin hats are in good condition, with both showing little use. The pantaloons and trousers also remain in very good clean condition. The lace accoutrements, buckles, spurs and other items show a little age from storage, but for the most part are in good condition. The storage trunk and hat tin show some corrosion to the lid, and the hat tin is dented to one side. Please note that not all items within the lot are shown in the images.
A nice quality late WW1 / WW2 era 9ct gold RAF sweetheart brooch. Depicting the usual crowned wings, with RAF initials to the centre. The brooch is marked ‘9ct’ to the reverse, but this is partly under the gold bar section and is difficult to see without magnification. The item is complete with a safety pin style clasp to reverse. Approximately 5.8cm width, weight 6.1g. Condition: very good. No damage or faults to the piece, good overall colour and patina.
A rare wartime signed 1939 issued pocket book once belonging to Great Escapee, Flight Lieutenant Paul Gordon Royle (1914-2015) of No.53 Squadron Royal Air Force. Paul was number 55 in the line of prisoners waiting to leave the Stalag Luft III prisoner of war camp. The pocket book is the 1937 edition, made with a blue canvas cover that has a button down flap on the reverse side. The book covers all manner of service related matters, such as flag recognition, ranks within the armed forces, the powers of commanding officers, court martial procedures, rations, knot tying, discipline during flights, world currencies, and many more pieces of information useful for a young Pilot Officer. The book is signed in fountain pen ‘P.G.Royle 16.5.39’ to the first page, with this date being a mere 3 days after he was formally inducted into the RAF, using the service number 42152. Provenance: the pocket book was acquired some years ago during the house clearance of former England cricketer, and WW2 Flight Lieutenant, Reg Simpson RAF (1920-2013). The link between Simpson and Royle is unknown, but both being Flight Lieutenants could have meant that they knew each other at some point during the war years. An RAF officer’s cap is also included in the lot, which is very faintly marked Flt Lt Reg Simpson to the lining, Interestingly, the cap has another name written to the underside of the leather sweatband, which reads as ‘D.J.Smith’, and it is fitted with a Queen’s crown badge to front (post 1952). The vendor disposed of many of Reg’s WW2 possessions many years ago, with the cap being the only remaining item. The signature is known to match the example seen in Paul’s original 1939 dated flight log book, and later post war examples (photographs of these items may be seen in the image pack, but these are for comparison only, and are not included in the sale - the photograph of Flt Lt Royle can be found in the public domain, and is not included in the sale). Notes: Paul Gordon Royle was born in Perth, Western Australia on January 17th 1914. Reg was recruited by visiting RAF personnel in late 1938, and was selected for a short service commission. Now 25 years old, he embarked for Great Britain in February 1939. His first stop was the No.7 Elementary and Reserve Flying Training School at Desford in Leicestershire, where he embarked on his first dual flight on March 14th 1939, and a solo flight on March 29th. Paul continued his training, and after the declaration of war on September 3rd 1939 his flight experience and training were accelerated, resulting in him emerging from his course as one of the most experienced pilots. Paul was posted to No.53 Squadron on May 14th 1940, and was very quickly involved in a reconnaissance mission over France, which after being attacked by German fighter aircraft, was forced to land his Blenheim Mk IVin a field at Fontaine-au-Pire. Seeking medical attention for himself and fellow flight crew, they made their way to a nearby village, followed some 6 hours later by the German forces who took them into captivity. Paul endured a year in Stalag Luft I, before being transferred to the famous Stalag Luft III in Sagan, Germany. He acted as one of the so called ‘penguins’ who disposed of the ground dug sand from tunnels, by letting it out of the bottom of their trousers. By March 24th 1944, and with an escape tunnel complete, he was number 55 in the queue of prisoners waiting to leave. He teamed up with his fellow officer, and number 54 in queue, Flt Lt Edgar Humphries (accounts vary as to which exact numbers both men were). Armed with civilian style clothes, rations, and a compass, they made their way of of the tunnel and on to the snow covered ground at 2:30am on March 25th 1944. Paul and Edgar were recaptured by the German Auxiliary Police when they entered a village, a mere 24 hours after their escape. The reprisals were severe, with Edgar Humphries being one of the 50 escapees executed by the Gestapo, believed to be a direct order from Adolf Hitler. Flt Lt Royle was interrogated and put into solitary confinement, with his life being spared. He was finally liberated on May 2nd 1945, and flown back to the U.K. where his was discharged from the RAF. Paul died aged 101 in 2015 in Perth, Western Australia, the last but one veteran of the Great Escape. Condition: the book has some normal age and service related wear. Some of the pages has a little age soiling, but nothing that is detrimental to the item. Page 124 is nibbled at the corner, and there is some rust corrosion to the press stud closure. The included officers hat has soiling to the liner, and there are 2 small holes to the crown area.
An interesting 1950’s / 60’s Staffordshire County Police group, formerly belonging to P.W.29 Mary D.Robinson, who was the first female Special Constable in the Willenhall Division. Comprising of a cased Police Long Service & Good Conduct Medal, named to ‘Const Mary D Robinson’ (issued in August 1978). Also, a 1950’s Staffordshire County Police chromed badge, a West Midlands Police chromed badge, and a pair of epaulettes with applied chrome service numbers ‘E 29’. Plus, a 2002 Royal Mint issued Golden Jubilee medallion for the West Midlands Police, a handwritten S.O. Book 121 with notes inside made by Mary regarding legal definitions, a uniform photograph, group photographs, 1950’s books on criminal law, several handwritten notebooks, pocketbooks, several volumes of ‘The Book For Police’ (from 1958), and 8 pieces of mid 20th century Staffordshire County Police pottery by Grindley Hotel Ware. All of the items are housed in a vintage toleware metal trunk. Condition: generally good to most pieces. The medal is generally good and just has some contact marks to the surface from wear, and similarly the cap badges are also in good condition. The period documentation, notebooks and books show a little wear from age and handling, but this is nothing that detracts. The trunk is corroded to the top, but there are no holes or splits to the metal. The pottery items are used, with a couple having chipping at the base. Important note: the trunk and its contents are heavy, and pick up of the item is strongly advised.
A very rare, and historically important 15th century fabric fragment, originally taken in the mid 19th century, from the Battle of Bosworth standard deposited by the tomb of Sir Robert Harcourt in Stanton Harcourt church in Oxfordshire. Acquired in circa 1847, and remaining in the same same family until 2015, the fragment was said to have been carried as part of a larger standard, by Sir Robert Harcourt, who was believed to have been one of Henry Tudor Earl of Richmond’s standard bearer during the Battle of Bosworth in 1485. Henry went on to defeat the incumbent King, Richard III, thus becoming Henry VII, and the founder of the Tudor dynasty. The woven fabric piece has a red base colour, with an overpainted golden band. The top section shows a distinct band where the base red colour meets the gold overpaint. Given the colour scheme used, it’s possible that this is actually a fragment of Sir Robert Harcourt’s own battle standard, which had alternating bands of red and gold. Notes: the fragment is housed in a relatively modern frame, along with appears to be an older calligraphy passage, stating its provenance, and a date of 1847. The handwritten details provide some erroneous information, such as the claim that it was a relic taken from the standard of Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth, when in fact, it’s likely to be a piece of Robert Harcourt’s own standard, plus the spelling of ‘Stanton’ is incorrect. It’s perhaps possible that incorrect information has been passed down through generations, and never questioned. This historic item was previously offered by Hansons in the December 2015 Fine Art Sale (Lot 435). Shown for reference in the last images is a contemporary image of the arms of Robert Harcourt. The fragment piece measures approximately 17.5cm x 14.5cm, with the frame measuring 35cm x 25cm. Condition: good. The frame and card mount are both good, and the calligraphy wording shoe a tiny amount of fading to the ink. The fabric standard is behind glass, but appears to be in good condion, with holes being age related wear.
A rare WW2 era X-Type leg bag parachute harness attachment.Formerly used by Captain D.B. Lynes of the 2nd S.A.S regiment. The rubber section to the metal attachment is marked ‘PAT.No 478.606’ and the webbing is ink stamped ‘M.E.Co 1944’. It’s also broad arrow marked with a number 90. The item has been consigned by the family of Captain Lynes, having been in the family since WW2, and has never been previously offered for sale. Condition: good.No apparent damage to any of the elements to the piece.Normal age related patination to the metal parts.
A WW2 vaulted Iron Cross 1st Class, marked ‘L/11’ in a box under the C clasp, indicating the maker of Wilhelm Deumer, Ludenscheid. With the usual black painted iron core, and closed back within a silvered frame.‘Coke bottle’ hinged pin and C clasp to the reverse.Notes: there is s scratched name under the pin, which appears to read as ‘J Krug’.Interestingly, the vaulted look appears to be a period modification of sorts, with there being slight crease lines to the metal at the back. This is evident to the front as well, where there is a slight gap between the core and frame, and signs of some metal stress / paint loss where it has been bent. This item was acquired, along with other Kreigsmarine related pieces, by Lieutenant, later Captain D.B.Lynes of the 2nd S.A.S.This item has been in the family since the conclusion of WW2.(Other items from this collection are listed in separate lots).Approximately 4.4cm width.Condition: generally good. The painted core is mostly intact, with just a small fleck of paint missing to the left of the swastika. Some toning to the silvered frame and back.
A rare to find WW1 era 1914 Christmas Tin issued by Cadburys Brother Ltd to wounded servicemen. Complete with it’s original paper insert (glued into place). The item is made in printed pressed tin, with a hinged lid. Printed portrait of George V to the centre, and the sides having flower basket decoration. Approximately 8.7cm x 8.7cm x 4.1cm. Condition: a little time worn, but still solidly constructed. The colours to the design have faded, and there is spotting where the printed design has flaked away. Small split to the lid near the front right corner. A little wear to the internal card, such as creasing and browning, but it appears to to be complete.
A 17th / 18th continental cup hilt rapier. Narrow double edged steel blade with very short fuller. There are the remains of some etched letters within the fuller, but these are for the most part indistinct and difficult to read. The pierced cup, knuckle guard, and fluted pommel show the remains of a gilded surface.Wooden handle with silvered partial wire wrapping. No apparent makers marks to be found.Notes: information from the vendor states the the item was rescued from a rubbish dump during WW2 and has remained in the family since then.Approximately in 117 in length, blade length 96.5cmCondition: generally solid, but age related wear. The gilded surface has worn to the guard area, and there is pitting to the cup, knuckle guard, and the pommel area. The wire grip is is loose and moves around on the wooden handle. The blade is in mostly good order, with normal mottling / darkening to the steel along its length. The blade has lost its tip or has blunted at some point in the past. The scabbard is absent.
A pair of WW2 issued German Kriegsmarines leather gauntlet mittens, with trigger finger to both.Lined with sheepskin, with one having the remains of the cloth size label for 8-1/2.Wrist area complete with tensioning straps, metal clips and ‘nappa’ press studs.Notes: this item, and other Kriegsmarine related pieces were acquired by Lieutenant, later Captain D.B.Lynes of the 2nd S.A.S.It’s believed that Captain Lynes acquired this item from a German U-Boat ‘Sub pen’ base in Bergen at the end of WW2.The collection of items have been in Captain Lynes family since the conclusion of WW2.(Other items from the collection are offered in separate lots).Condition: generally fair. The pair have suffered the ravages of time, and likely poor storage. The press stud fittings have verdigris, plus the metal clips have surface rust. The leather straps are dry and a little cracked, with some also being partly detached. The main leather body of the mittens are still quite supple, and free from any holes or splits to the seams. Some of the sheepskin lining has degraded over time, possibly from old moth damage.

A WW2 German U-Boat badge. An unmarked example, with a gilt finish, ‘coke bottle’ pin and C clasp tothe reverse side. There appears to be a scratched mark either side of the C clasp, which looks like ‘X 44’, or possibly a date of ‘8 44’.Whether this relates to the German U-Boat U-44, or a date of issue in 1944 is unknown.Note: this item, along with other Kriegsmarine related pieces, was acquired at the end of WW2 by Lieutenant, later Captain D.B.Lynes of the 2nd S.A.S.The items were believed to have been acquired by Captain Lynes from a German U-Boat ‘Sub pen’ base in Bergen, and have remained in the family since the conclusion of WW2.(Other items from this collection are offered in separate lots).Approximately 4.8cm width, height 3.9cm.Condition: some wear commensurate with age, use, and storage. The gilt finish has worn and dulled to the front side, with only small traces of the brighter gilt coating still present. The reverse side has also dulled, but their is more gilt present, particularly to the pin.The top part of the eagle has oxidised, giving it a grey powdery look. Both the pin and clasp work as they should.
