The present miniature predates Lens' appointment in 1723 as "Painter in Enamell [sic] in Ordinary" to the King, and it was therefore probably painted to help secure his position at the court. Diana Jane, daughter of Edmund Pery, 1st Viscount Pery. He studied at St. John's College, Cambridge, before embarking on a career in politics. In 1812, Knox succeeded his father as M.P. for County Tyrone and later for Dungannon between 1818-1830. He gained the courtesy title Viscount Northland upon his father's elevation to the earldom of Ranfurly in 1831 and later succeeded his father as the 2nd Earl of Ranfurly in 1840. He married Mary Juliana, daughter of the Most Reverend William Stuart, in 1815, by whom he had four sons and six daughters. A number of the sitter's siblings were also painted by James Holmes Junior (see Provenance; see lots 346 and 347).In 1810, the sitter's father, Michael Henry Senior, was sent to work in the Colonies where he married Anne Mary Flower (1790-1876), daughter of Sir Charles Flower, Lord Mayor of London. During the War of 1812, he served as a Staff Officer and provincial Aide-de-Camp to Sir George Prévost (1767-1816) and went on to become the Commissioner for the Port of Quebec in 1826. The family lived in Quebec from 1811 to 1828. They were scheduled to spend a year in Florence, but as their father died during the voyage, their mother decided to return to England where the sons joined the armed forces whilst most of the daughters married into the aristocracy.Michael Henry Junior joined the Royal Navy and became a Captain. In 1849, he married Maria Vanneck (d.1903), daughter of the Hon. According to a contemporary account published in 1840 by the British consul to Cuba, David Turnbull (1794-1851), Hammel was "the sailing master of the Madagascar" and was stationed near Port Royal, Jamaica (see Travels in the West; Cuba with notices of Porto Rico, and the slave trade, 1840, p.427). Another account by Commodore Sir John Strutt Peyton records Hammel Strutt having detained a schooner Feliz, sailing under Portuguese colours about twenty miles east of Port Royal and carrying 326 slaves as cargo (see Accounts and Papers: Slave Trade, Session 5 February - 27 August 1839, vol. Born in Westminster into a naval family with connections to the Pitt family, Smith joined the Royal Navy in 1777 at the age of thirteen and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a lieutenant at the age of eighteen. He served with distinction in the American Revolutionary War, the French Revolutionary Wars, and the Napoleonic Wars, earning a reputation as a brilliant tactician and commander. In 1799, as a Captain of the HMS Tigre, he led an audacious attack on the French fleet at the Battle of the Nile, which resulted in a resounding victory for the British.After distinguishing himself in the Mediterranean, Smith returned to England in 1801, becoming a Member of Parliament for Rochester and the lover of Caroline of Brunswick, Princess of Wales. He returned to active duty in 1805 and sailed for Portugal. In 1807, during the Siege of Porto, Portugal, he successfully defended the city against a superior French force, earning him the title of 'Conqueror of Porto.' He also played a crucial role in the successful defence of Cádiz, Spain, against French forces during the Peninsular War. Smith was often entrusted with diplomatic missions by the British government, attending the Congress of Vienna and playing a key role in fostering alliances with various European powers to counter French expansionist ambitions. In 1815, he received a knighthood for his work with Wellington in securing the peace and guaranteeing that Louis XVIII could safely return to Paris. After his illustrious naval career, Smith retired from active service in 1816 and was later promoted to the rank of Admiral. He settled in Paris, where he lived a retired life, writing memoirs and assisting with British diplomatic efforts. He served as the First Lord of the Treasury twice, from 1783 to 1801 and from 1804 until his death in 1806.Born in 1759, the son of the prominent politician, William Pitt the Elder (1708-1778), who himself previously served as Prime Minister from 1766-68, Pitt the Younger entered politics at a young age. In 1766, his father was created Earl of Chatham. In 1782, he joined the government of Lord Shelburne as Chancellor of the Exchequer and was appointed a member of the Privy Council. As First Lord of the Treasury, he focused on reducing the national debt and promoting free trade. He also helped to negotiate the Treaty of Paris, which ended the American War of Independence. He was elected a Sheriff of the City of London in 1800 and later, in 1803, Lord Mayor of London. In 1808, he was created 1st baronet of Membland, Devon. He served as the Member of Parliament for New Romney in 1806 and for Hythe from 1810 until 1820. He was also a commissioner for exchequer bills and a partner in the banking firm, John Perring, Shaw, Barber & Co. Following the Panic of 1825 - a stock market crash resulting in part out of speculative land investments in Latin America - Perring lost his estates. He died in 1831 at the age of 65 and is interred in St. Pancras Church, London. The artist, William Grimaldi, was the great-grandson of Alessandro Maria Grimaldi, the heir of the Genoese family of Grimaldi, who had settled in England after the bombardment of Genoa in 1684. His clients included the Prince of Wales and Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany. In 1802, he succeeded to the titles of Baron FitzGibbon in the Peerage of Great Britain and Earl of Clare in the Irish Peerage. Educated at Christ Church, Oxford, he was active in the House of Lords from 1820, becoming a Privy Councillor in 1830. He served as Governor of Bombay from 1830-1835, as Deputy Lieutenant of the County of Limerick from 1846-1849 and afterwards was appointed Lord Lieutenant of the City of Limerick for the remainder of his life. In 1826, he married the Hon. Elizabeth Burrell, daughter of Peter Burrell, 1st Lord Gwydwyr and Priscilla Bertie, suo jure Baroness Willoughby de Eresby. The couple lived apart, Lady Clare moving to the Isle of Wight where she built a Catholic church at Ryde and a Priory at Carisbrooke. Lord Clare was a great friend of Lord Byron whom he met at Harrow School. Byron had claimed to love him "ad infinitum" and said that he could never hear the word "Clare" without "a murmur of the heart". The drawers all run as expected but the frieze drawer needs easing a little and again no key is present.The desk has been stored in an unheathed environment (I presume) and the polish is a little dull and could do with reviving.generally the structure is good but the desk will need some work to make good.

One of the the expansion buttons that holds the bearers in place has some historic wood worm where sapwood has been touched upon in its manufacture.

A GEORGE II MAHOGANY COLLECTORS CABINET ON STANDCIRCA 1750The doors opening to an arrangement of drawers106cm high, 66cm wide, 44cm deep overallCondition Report: Old marks, scratches and abrasions, chips and splits commensurate with age and use. Some small losses. Some additional dark stains/ ring marks to the top and in some other positions. There are two adjacent splits across the rear edge of the top where the item may have been carried and split. (see images) Very good original colour and patina overall. Original surface overall.The stand is original. The corner blocks to the interior of the frieze of the stand appear original to it but are slightly curious as they appear to have been cut from a section of moulding. Some of the blocks are lacking. (see images) The 'ear' of one rear leg of the stand is detached and lacking. The original door hinges have been removed and the apertures are visible. Later hinges have been added in alternative positions. Only fragments of the brass door escutcheon to the right hand door remain present. The corresponding door lock has a screw missing. The lock appears original but is lacking the key The handles to the interior drawers are original. The drawer fronts of all of the interior drawers are solid mahogany. The large side carrying handles are original. There are later small blocks to the interior acting as drawer stops (at the back of the drawers) Of solid structure overall. Sections of soft solder are visible all along the join, and with some tarnish.Wear to the portrait bezel edge, with some small losses. Some areas of the bezel edge are slightly out of shape. A few sections have folded into gaps between the glass and the bezel, visible by 10x magnification. Seed pearl monogram to the reverse appears to be missing one small seed pearl to the top of the T. Underside of glass and surface of woven hair showing some flecks of dust and dirt, mostly under 10x magnification with some visible by eye.Solder join visible to one side of the frame.Spots of tarnish to metal surfaces.Minor dents, marks and scratches.Included papers read: 'Considered by Mr Lowe of the Victoria and Albert Museum to be an early work of Thomas Hazelhurst circa 1790'. The reverse of this paper (not shown in the photo) reads 'Portrait of William Bellew of Stockleigh Court'. The lower paper reads ' This portrait came to me from my Aunt Louisa Bellew. It was the portrait of her grand father. On the death of Reginald Crundall Punnett it is to go to Froude Trollope-Bellew'.
