[Law Books Bibliography] Fontana, Bibliotheca, 1688 THE FUNDAMENTAL BIBLIOGRAPHY FOR LAW BOOKS UNTIL 1688AND ONE OF THE FEW BIBLIOGRAPHIES ON ANCIENT LAW BOOKSFontana, Augustino. Amphitheatrum legale In Quo Quilibet Operum Legalium Author habet suam sedem ordine Alphabetico collocatam seu Bibliotheca Legalis Amplissima […]. Parmae, Typis Iosephi ab Oleo, & Hippolyti Rosati, 1688.3 parts on 5 bound together in a Folio volume (292x190 mm), full vellum binding, 5 raised bands spine, reinforced with same material, sepia ink handwritten tittles at second spine section. Sprayed edges, cc. [20], col. 710, pp. [3, blanks], [2, last blank], col. 480, pp. [2, blanks], [2, last blank], col. 442, p. [1, blank]. Romanic and italic font, text in Latin and Italian.First edition of the most important bibliography related to law books till 1688, that maps the printed editions of medieval and renaissance jurists. The Amphitheatrum legale is a wide collection containing more than fifteen thousand items, sorted by author, and by subject. Fontana compiled this work taking inspiration from the Bibliotheca legalis, handwritten catalogue by Domenico Maria Corsi, future Bishop of Rimini and Cardinal, adding the items contained in the collection of Martin Upen’s (Bibliotheca realis, Frankfurt, 1679). Once published the Amphitheatrum had a great diffusion in Italy and abroad. Even at the starting od XIX century Pillet, in the item dedicated to Fontana in Biographie universelle ancienne et moderne gave a positive judgment, considering the work richer and easier to be consulted than the work of Upen, despite the correction, integration and Supplementa that, differently from Fontana, enriched this last work along the time. ITALIAN TRANSLATION:3 parti su 5 legate insieme in un volume in-folio (292x190 mm), piena pergamena rigida con dorso a cinque nervi rinforzato con lo stesso materiale, titoli manoscritti al secondo scomparto in inchiostro bruno, tagli spruzzati del medesimo inchiostro, cc. [20], col. 710, pp. [3, bianche], [2, l’ultima bianca], col. 480, pp. [2, bianche], [2, l’ultima bianca], col. 442, p. [1, bianca]. Carattere Romano e Corsivo, testo in latino e in italiano. Traces of foxing, but overall a very good copy.
