Two, each quarter length, she wearing a shawl and lace-trimmed bonnet, a label verso indicating that this was painted in 1798; he in dark coat and with clerical bands, holding a book, oil on panel 27.5 x 24cm and 28.5 x 24.5cm. (2) * The portrait of the Rev. Poole has been ascribed to W. Shuter (Fl.1771-1798). Poole, a keen botanist, was known within the family as `John the Divine` and he wrote `The Village School Improved` (1815) Provenance: By descent in the family of the sitters. *Condition: She with some craquelure; he with a fine vertical split, some damages and retouching.

Seated half length, wearing a russet dress and ochre mantle, seated upon a sofa, a swag and pillar beyond, distant landscape, oil on panel 34 x 28cm. Provenance: By descent in the family of the sitter. The sitter inherited the estate of Naseby in Northamptonshire and was renowned for her beauty as much as her wealth. She married her cousin John Purcell and, conventionally, took his surname until 1818. In that year, her husband changed his own surname to Fitzgerald whereupon she became Mrs John Fitzgerald. Her son, Edward (1809-1883), who translated `The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam` in 1859, disliked it: `I somehow detest my own scrolloping surname`. *Condition: Some slight craquelure; needs a light clean; slight paint separation on sitter's right hip.

A RARE BOXED .22 DON BLOCKSIDGE ENGRAVED WEBLEY 'VULCAN SPECIAL CUSTOM' AIR-RIFLE, no visible serial number, one of only 110 produced (in un-engraved form) circa 1982, with blued 19 1/4in. barrel (rear-sight removed but present, the lower front corners of the breech-block engraved with bright American scrolls, blued air-chamber with machined rails for a telescopic sight, a further engraved panel of similar scrollwork on the front top of air-chamber with a central depiction of a bolting rabbit and a smaller panel of scroll only to the top of trigger unit, gold-plated trigger and safety-catch, high-grade chequered walnut half-stock fitted with a ventilated rubber recoil pad, the blued trigger guard with further bright open scroll-work, the whole appearing very little used and complete in its maker's card and polystyrene carton with papers and instructions (oil sample empty).

PAT. 13749', guarded trigger forming the cocking link, hinged back-strap forming a leverage aid, slab-sided brown bakelite grips with a central lightning bolt device bisecting the hole for the grip-screw with 'THUNDERBOLT JUNIOR' on a raised panel above and 'MADE IN ENGLAND' below, the whole retaining much of an older refinish and together with its original maker's card carton with blue printed label (taped repairs).
