Russian Imperial silver gilt and cloisonne christening set given as a gift by Czarina Alexandra of Russia, by Ivan Saltikov for Grachev, together with fascinating provenance referred to by the Allen family of Cathcart House Harrogate as 'the family bible', including handwritten letters from Carl Faberge asking for images of Cathcart House to be used in the 1896 Imperial egg.The christening set is presented in a simple oak case with engraved plaque bearing inscription 'Presented to Alix Beatrice Emma Allen by her Godmother Her Imperial Majesty The Czarina of Russia, 21st May 1895.' The set comprises knife, fork, spoon, napkin ring and salt cellar & spoon, decorated in traditional Russian coloured enamels, bearing marks for Grachev and makers mark of Ivan Saltikov, salt spoon bears Grachev mark & makers mark AN. 1895.The scrap book accompanying the lot includes two letters from Carl Faberge dated October 1895 - an excerpt follows - 'His Majesty the Emperor has charged me to make a rich album containing views of all the places where Her Majesty lived in her youth. Would you be kind enough to send me a photo of your house in which the Princess lived in 1894.' It is now known that this refers to the images of Cathcart House used in the 1896 Imperial Rock Crystal Egg in the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Also included are - signed photograph of the Czar & Czarina, letters of introduction and thanks from the Czarina's lady in waiting, telegrams from Queen Alexandra to Princess Victoria signed Mother Dear, and many news clippings of the time reporting on the Russian Royal family and the British Royal family links to Cathcart House and the Allen family. The lot is consigned by a direct descendent of the Allen Family. Generally very good condition - the set does not appear to have been used. Knife blade still has lacquer covering to prevent tarnish. Fork - no sign of damage or repair, Large spoon has small amount of red enamel loss to one lozenge shaped panel on the knop. Napkin ring - no sign of damage or repair, Salt Cellar no sign of damage or repair , salt spoon has small amount of green enamel loss to one panel.The box is in good condition for age, silk tabs holding the lid in place when open have disintegrated. Grachev mark printed in silk to lining. Box dimensions 29.5 cms x 6 cms high, 14.4 cms deep.
1861 Victorian Norwich Rifle Volunteers Presentation Sword.This is an example of a specially commissioned 1827 Light Infantry pattern sword. The blade with full length engraved decoration with presentation panel "This sword was presented with a Henrys Rifle to Captain Middleton by the Officer's and Privates of No.1 Company Norwich Rifle Volunteers as a token of the high regard and esteem October 1861". Also engraved with an Armorial crest. The hilt of regulation pattern incor[porating a crown strung bugle device. The shagreen grip with twist wire binding. Blade decoration is clear, some overall minor age wear and dulling. PLEASE NOTE scabbard absent.
William IV Officer's 1822 Pattern Levee Piped Back Bladed Sword.A good clean example the slightly curved single edged piped back blade, with an etched panel with crowned WIVR cypher. This cypher is repeated to the brass folding open guard. The shagreen grip with twist wire binding. Housed in a polished brass scabbard. Overall GC slight wear and dulling to brass.
A late 18th century Chinese export blue and white meat plate of rectangular form with canted corners, floral decorated border and central panel of blossoming tree beside a fence, width 46.25cm. CONDITION REPORT Some surface scratches and natural pitting, some small areas of fritting to the rim, otherwise ok.
A c1800 Chinese Imari-decorated shallow bowl with moulded rim and central panel decorated with a bird amongst flowers and bamboo, unmarked, diameter approx 34.5cm. CONDITION REPORT There is tow 8cm hair line cracks spuring from the rim, a very thin sliver chip to the foot rim, some surface scratches and natural pitting, and some loss to the gilding on the decoration.
A Victorian gold and enamel mourning brooch, the central rectangular enamel panel decorated with roses, lilies and carnations in a gold and enamelled scrolling mount with shell decoration to the top and bottom, length 5cm. CONDITION REPORT Slight loss to enamel to enamel - outer frame. Gold not marked. Overall nicely presented, approx 18.2g.

A collection of Zulu beadwork South Africa including - five cylinder neckpieces, four waistbands with woven fibre backs and brass buttons, three waistbands with fabric backs and string, two pairs of anklets with brass buttons, six twin panel neckpieces, one broken, two cloth skirts, one hung with bells, a rectangular panel, a gourd cover and a plaited fibre neckpiece. (28) Provenance Inherited by Mrs Elizabeth Ransom of Perthshire, Scotland in the late 1960's Formed as a collection in Africa by a civil servant of board of agriculture, Scottish Office, worked out in Kwa Zulu Natal and helped the women of the Shembe Church in Durban out there as a young girl, end of 19th Century - Early 20th Century She contracted TB and went to Jamaica for her health. Came home annually then retired to Reading and then back to Scotland in early 1960's Died in 1964 aged 89 (1875 - 1964)

Victorian Field Binoculars of Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick Walter Kitchener, KCB Brother of Field Marshal Earl Kitchener A good late Victorian campaign pair of Field Glasses, Binoculars made by Negater and Zambia. The binoculars with an engraved panel "F.B. Kitchener". Complete with original polished brown leather case, this with tooled initials "F.W.K." The binoculars remain in good condition, leather case with service wear, overall GC. Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick Walter Kitchener, KCB was the younger brother of Field Marshal Hereto Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener KG, KPH, GCB, OM, GCS, GCMG, CIE, PC. He began his career 1876 serving with the 14th Foot. He saw action in the second Afghan War, Egypt and the Boer War. In 1908 he was appointed C-in-C of Bermuda.
