STATUETTE DE BOUDDHA EN ALLIAGE DE CUIVRE DORÉDYNASTIE YUAN, XIVE SIÈCLEHimalayan Art Resources item no. 4626 17 cm (6 3/4 in.) highFootnotes:A GILT COPPER ALLOY FIGURE OF BUDDHAYUAN DYNASTY, 14TH CENTURY元 十四世紀 銅鎏金佛陀像 Provenance:With Claude de Marteau, Brussels, by 1970s Many images of the Buddha exist memorializing the moment of his enlightenment. Iconic in form, the portrait is at once recognizable in the gesture, contemplative gaze, and perfected meditative posture. Yet, every iteration carries unique features and motifs tracing both tradition and change, telling a story of both time and place. This bronze tells of the Yuan dynasty's eager patronage of Tibetan Buddhism and its summoning of master Newari artisans from Nepal to establish the dynasty's own practice of image making. Yuan court annals and a reign-marked gilt copper alloy sculpture of Manjushri in the Palace Museum, Beijing, attest to this narrative (see Bigler, Before Yongle, 2013, p. 11, fig. 3). Like the present sculpture, the Manjushri, dated to the 9th year of the Dade reign (1305 CE), emphasizes its subject's sublime nature through a lightly clad idealized body characteristic of Newari aesthetics; less focus is placed conversely on heavily patterned garments and intricate jewelry. The sentiment is carried by the present bronze's restraint of ornamentation in the sheer monastic robe, which hugs a sensuous, monumental frame. Both figure's broad foreheads and square jaws share an affinity with buddha images from Nepal's Early Malla period (13th/14th century). So do the wide, beaded hemlines within their garments. However, the sculptures have almost identical beaded lotus pedestals completed in the round displaying tear-shaped inner petals with curled tips surrounded by a flatter second layer with ridged tips. Such bases and a particular technique of engraving, comprised of small punch marks yielding scrollwork, are idiomatic of bronzes produced for the Yuan dynasty. Additionally, the most prominent engraved detail embellishing the present Buddha is found over his left shoulder, showing a square panel with a visvavajra surmounted by a lotus flower. This motif and the other Yuan elements are all represented by a bronze buddha sold at Bonhams, Hong Kong, 2 December 2021, lot 1011 and two other published examples (ibid., pp. 92-5 & 112-3, nos. 21 & 26).For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Y A SOUTH ITALIAN VERRE EGLOMISE, TORTOISHELL, ROSEWOOD, EBONISED AND EBONY CABINET NAPLES, LATE 17TH CENTURY, CIRCLE OF LUCA GIORDAN, POSSIBLY BY DOMENICO COSCIA Of breakfront outline, the panels painted with mythological scenes, the central architectural door opening to a mirrored recess ON A LATER GEORGE III EBONISED AND PARCEL GILT STAND LATE 18TH CENTURY the cabinet and stand overall 176cm high, 146cm wide, 50cm deep Provenance: Christie's, London, Fine European Furniture, Sculpture, Tapestries and Carpets, 10th November 2005, Lot 164 Catalogue Note: During the 17th and 18th Century many visitors on the Grand tour would have marvelled at the Italian interiors adorned with exquisite furniture. The cabinet on stand was a piece particularly admired and often commissioned to be brought back to England. One such grand tourist was Thomas Isham 3rd Bt (d.1681) who spent three years in Rome amassing a collection of wonderful objects which included a similar pair of cabinets. Other comparable examples can be found in the Victoria and Albert museum, The Palazzo Barberini and the Pitti Palace (see E. Colle, Il Mobile Barocco in Italia, Milan, no. 14). The painted panels depicting mythological subject matter resembles the work of Luca Giordano (1632-1705) although none of the designs have been attributed to him. Bernardo de Dominici an Italian historian and painter (1683-1759) wrote extensively in his Vite de' Pittori Scultori ed Archietti Napoletani on Giordano's painting on glass which resembles the imagery of this cabinet. However, he also mentions the pupils of Giordano who painted on glass, most notably Domenico Coscia. Not much has been written about Coscia and he remains largely unknown. Nevertheless, the artist is mentioned in Linda Martino's introduction of the 'Vetri Dipinti' section in A.Gonzalez-Palacios, Civilta del Seicento a Napoli, 1984, p 4.22. This suggests he was the most prolific glass painter of cabinets at the time and probably was the painter of this piece. Alvar Gonzalez- Palacios also argues panels of this kind were initially painted in Florence and then assembled in Naples. This suggests the painter would have been a living in Florence at the time (A. Gonzalez-Palacios, Il Tempio del Gusto, vol). This theory is supported by Mina Gregori and Frederico Zeri who have attributed similar panels in a Naples private collection to the Florentine artist Pietro Dandini (1646-1712) [ibid.,p.283]. Condition Report: Overall there are knocks, scratches, cracks and abrasions consistent with age and use. There are losses, restorations and observations including: some black staining; cracks to some veneers including the rosewood sides; the base with no carving to the back of the back legs; the base with gilding probably later, suggested by the absence of gilding to the back of the front legs even though they are carved with flutes; scuffing along the top edge of the front of the base revealing the underlying wood; the lock to the central door is a replacement; scuffing where the drawers and door run against the outset base of the top; the painted panels with some paint flaking and scratched; some cracks to some panels; some verre eglomise panels loose; lacking one moulding to the side of one panel; chips and losses to the tortoiseshell including to the edges alongside the drawers; there is evidence of worm. Please see the additional photographs as a visual reference of condition. Condition Report Disclaimer

Vittorio Borriello (Italian-American, 1896-1974)A young woman in a black hat, in profilesigned and dated 'Boriello 1919' l.c., also signed and dated on label verso, oil on panel35 x 21.5cmProvenance: The Estate of Sir Jack and Lady Baer.Borriello was born in Naples but moved to New York, living there until his death in 1974. The artist's ability to capture a profile with such intensity is highly skilled. Our eyes are focused on the smooth arc of the hat, executed in darkest black, its flair is in the elegant and sharp line it weaves around the sitter's head, which accentuates her fine jawline and elongated neck. The hat throws shade over the sitter's eyes creating a certain intrigue and mystery in relation to her identity. Keeping to a simple palette, Borriello creates depth and texture through a confident understanding of the paint. He finely works the flesh tones on the sitter's face and neck, while contrasting this against a much freer use of brushwork on the dress and background.Condition ReportFramed size: 53 x 39.5cm.Probably covered with a discoloured varnish which may therefore brighten on cleaning, a thin crack to paint across cheek that is visible to reverse of panel, please see images, under uv light no obvious signs of retouching.
