17TH CENTURY ITALIAN SCHOOL Ecclesia, oil on panel 70 x 52 cm (27 1/2 x 20 1/2 in.) LOT NOTESIn exegesis, the allegorical figure of Ecclesia symbolises the Church as the Bride of Christ. Though later juxtaposed with Synagoga, the Jewish Synagogue, early Christian depictions of Ecclesia are individual, as here. Calling for humility and penitence, the inscriptions in the doorway read, in Latin, astra peto (from the saying "natus humi post opus astra peto" meaning "after much work I rise to the stars") and e celis lapsa (roughly translated as "backsliding from heaven," as seen in various 17th century English texts.)

A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE HOSPITALITY OF ABRAHAM WITH SELECTED SAINTS, 19TH CENTURY depicting the Hospitality of Abraham and Sarah under the Oak of Mamre at the center of the composition, surrounded by scenes of the visitation of the Holy Trinity to Abraham with the walls of Sodom seen in the distance; the washing the feet of the Trinity by Abraham; the servant killing a calf; the angel visiting Abraham and Sarah a year later with Sarah holding the newborn son, Isaac, that was promised to them; Abraham with the Holy Trinity; and two scenes of the Binding of Isaac: Abraham and Isaac traveling to Moriah and the angel intervening in Abraham`s offering. Above these scenes, a depiction of the Holy Trinity splits the words: "The Holy Image of the Holy Trinity". Bordering the composition are saints Holy Hegumen Daniil [Daniel], the Holy Metropolitan Pyotr [Peter], Holy Hegumen Sergius of Radonezh, and Holy Knyaz' Gleb [David], egg tempera, gold leaf and gesso on wood panel, with two insert splints (both missing). 43 x 36 cm (16 15/16 x 14 3/16 in.)
