A Large Early 20th Century Bone Fan, mounted with eau de nil silk and backed with gauze of a similar colour. Of balloon form, the leaf is embroidered with silver sequins of different shapes and sizes, in the design of swags and bows. The monture is lightly carved, pierced and gilded. Height to top centre when closed is approx 13.5 inches or 34.5cm; and An Early 20th Century Fan of Fontange Shape, the monture of light wood painted gold, the fine gauze leaf painted with a design of autumnal leaves, mainly in gold, with four small birds with fluffy chest feathers and inquisitive expressions in the central panel below. Height to top centre when closed is approx. 14 inches or 36cm (2)Fan 1 - One central gorge stick is detached from the rib. At this point the silk has been damaged to the lower edge of the leaf. At some point the fan has been pinned to something, a pin hole is evident to the top right side and to the left side there is also rust where the shape of a drawing pin can be seen. Fan 2 - The gauze is split in several places, and the top edge has losses. No signature noted.
''The New Church Fan'': An Early 18th Century Printed Fan, the double paper leaf mounted on plain pale wooden sticks. Published ''with the APPROBATION of the LORD BISHOP of LONDON'', the centre of the fan shows ''Exodus Chapter XX'' and features The Lord's Prayer to the left and other catholic texts. The borders feature crowns. The leaf is marked ''Entered at Stationer's Hall by The Proprietor May 1st 1716. Guard length 9.75 inches or 24.5cm. Together with an 18th century sea green card fan tubeQuite dirty, and some brown staining all along the top border and on most folds. Loss of some paper to the left on the guard panel.
A Large Circa 1890's Brussels Bobbin Lace Fan, mounted à l'Anglaise on pink Mother of Pearl, a central panel of dark cream gauze painted with birds and butterflies amidst blossoms on slender branches, a further spray of flowers and foliage to the side. Signed near the top border Evelas? Guard length 14 inches or 35.5cm. Together with a maroon covered card fan box, the fan shaped label for ''Natalie 169 Sloane Street London'' adhered to the lid interiorVery good, clean and sound. The leaf needs to be partly re-secured to one guard. The box is somewhat battered, and the lid is almost detached.
A Large Late 19th Century Bone Fan, the monture lightly carved with delicate and mainly floral designs, the leaf of Brussels bobbin lace, unbacked but containing a painted gauze central panel depicting a young lady elegantly dressed in white, carrying a fan, smiling at Cupid who is shooting his bow. Most probably a marriage fan. Guard length approx. 35cm. Contained in a card fan bearing the label for the retailer, J Duvelleroy, LondonGood. Two ribs broken. Glue residue on the lower guard. The gauze is not splitting, one small glue stain on the edge of the gauze. No signature noted. Box strong.
An Ivory Fan Dated 1887, mounted with a double velum leaf, depicting a Mediterranean stone balcony beside an ornate stone arch, with colourful woven rugs hanging over the balustrade, a panel carved with initials (KS?), the verso painted with scrolling, two vignettes containing the dates 1877 and 1887, a further larger vignette containing the initials MC. Guard length 13.75 inches or 35cm. Together with a cream card fan box, the inner lid bearing the adhesive label for Maison Ernest Kees, ParisGood strong colour, generally clean, the verso being lightly marked at the top end of at least seven folds. The box lid is defective at both ends.
A Dainty Circa 1755 Ivory Cabriolet Fan, the monture finely painted with flowers, butterflies and Chinoiserie figures, the upper guards with carnations and lilies. The recto shows outdoor scenes of leisure and relaxation, and one couple riding in a horse-drawn carriage. The verso repeats the rural theme, one panel depicting a shepherdess. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cm. Together with a modern black card fan boxThe upper guard has broken at the lower panel level, all parts present. Slight damage to the leaf to the side of this point. Some rubbing to the folds
A Pair of Early 19th Century French Shaped/Rectangular Face Screens or Fixed Fans, each seemingly cut and shaped from a single piece of wood, both rectos painted, one with a crab, oysters and other fish, the second with monkeys in human clothing, grouped around a fire in a bowl, two with long handled pipes, ''The Figaro'' newspaper in the foreground. Both handles are integral and at the shoulder are shaped to form a lyre, each having scrolling designs to border the central scenes, The versos are equally interesting, one with a rural scene of two young women talking to a young man with a donkey loaded with paniers, the second with a hunter on horseback with gun primed, his dogs ready to retrieve. Overall height 15.75 or 40cmBoth screens are slightly warped. The one with the crab has damage to the lyre shape, is generally somewhat rubbed, and the varnish is scuffed in places. It also has been damaged at the head and is now supported by a wood panel on the verso at this point. The fan with the monkeys is in much better order.
A Regency Printed and Hand-Coloured Fan, the double paper leaf mounted on basic and plain dark wooden sticks. The recto depicts a lady wearing early 19th century dress reading a letter which has either been just delivered by, or indeed written by, a young man in breeches, boots and buttoned waistcoat of the period. The scene is bordered with a classical leaf design. The verso is plain. Guard length approx. 8.5 inches or 21.5cm; and A Late 18th/Early 19th Century Printed and Hand-Coloured Fan, the double paper leaf mounted on basic wooden sticks, plain and light to the gorge, plain and dyed dark brown and polished for the guards, with bone thumb guards. The main body of the recto depicts a rocky countryside clearing with tall trees and unusual bushes, mountains in the distance and possibly rural Italian buildings to the bottom left. Centrally, country people take refreshment, one petting a dog. Above and surrounding the scene are 2 borders, one in pale yellow featuring birds attempting to prey upon large insects and snails. The upper border, in cream, has a simple leaf design. To the lower border a very thin pink panel is printed with ''gravé par J B D????on''. Guard length approx. 9.75 inches or 25cm (2)Fan 1 - Very good. One very minor loss to the lower edge of the leaf and some slight marks on the verso, plus at top border level and seen from the right side of the verso, some very very slight staining. Fan 2 - Very good.
An Early 19th Century Wooden Fan, mounted with a sea green double paper leaf, completely plain save for a silver top border. Guard length 9 inches or 23cm; A Late 18th Century Carved And Pierced Wood Brisé Fan, the top half of all sticks carved and pierced with classical designs, some colour highlights. A central applied vignette of a gravure on paper shows a pensive lady in classical flowing robes, a dog at her feet. To each side, a rectangular vignette painted onto the sticks, containing stylised swags and flowers. The verso is plain. Bone thumb guards. Twenty-eight inner stick plus two guards. Guard length 9.5inches or 24cm; A Late 18th Century Wood Brisé Fan, carved and pierced throughout with roundels and a central shield containing initials. Twenty-seven inner sticks and two guards. Guard length 10.25 inches or 26cm; and A Late 18th Century Wood Brisé Fan, with Chinoiserie style decoration, the twenty four inner sticks and two guards carved and pierced and featuring 6 ovals. Centrally, the applied paper panel depicts a rural scene with rocks, stylised trees, a bridge spanning a river on which basic boats are travelling. A multi storey pagoda style building sits atop the rocks. To the left, however, is a much more European style building with a stone tower, and castellated walls behind. The verso is plain. Guard length 11 inches or 27.5cm (4)Fan 1 - Generally good, some rubbing to the folds. Fan 2 - The ribbon needs replacing. One stick is broken at the tip and repaired on the verso. Several of the stick tips have loss. Fan 3 - The upper guard has part of the next stick in stuck to it, and the guard itself has damage. The lower guard has 2 metal plate repairs. At least 3 of the inner sticks have losses. The ribbon needs replacing. Fan 4 - At least 2 sticks are missing, the large ovals are missing one stick at each side.
A Fine Fan by Alexandre, circa 1880, believed to have belonged to the Infanta Maria de la Paz (1862-1948), daughter of Queen Isabella II of Spain and her husband Francisco. In 1880 The Infanta married her first cousin, Prince Ludwig Ferdinand of Bavaria, a member of the Bavarian Royal House of Wittelsbach and a General of Cavalry. Following the marriage, the couple lived outside Munich in the Nymphenburg Palace. The couple visited Paris on their way to Munich which presents the possibility of the fan being purchased then. The double velum leaf, painted with a charming and amusing scene of a wealthy couple in fine costume taking tea in the garden, the lady reading a letter, younger family members noting that the gentleman is snoozing and tickling him with a flower to rouse him from slumber. A further group of adults, possibly including clergy, are in discussion to the side. A stream and woodland next to a fine country house complete the scene. Signed M de Garay in red on the recto, bottom left, the leaf is mounted on carved and pierced blond tortoiseshell sticks. The upper guard has a panel left plain for a monogram. The verso is painted with PAZ underneath a coronet and is inscribed ''Alexandre'' to the left border. Guard length 11.75 inches or 30cm. Together with a lilac silk covered hinged fan box, lined with lilac, the interior of the lid stamped with a scrolling design in gold that could contain the word ''éventail'' and perhaps more, but is hard to distinguish Provenance: Lot 774 in Sotheby's sale in Amsterdam entitled ''Of Noble and Royal Descent ...'', held on 18th-20th February, achieving a hammer price of 3317,00 eurosSuperb detail to the costumes including the quilting to the petticoat worn by the lady to the left. Light wear to the folds. Some brown staining to the verso. The exterior silk of the box has faded in comparison to the strong interior colour
A Late 19th Century Point De Gaze Needle Lace Fan Mounted on Ivory, the sticks gilded, the guards elaborately carved with cupids, flower baskets, a bird and the initials ''LB''. The Belgian lace surrounds a central cream gauze panel painted with a portrait of Emile Blavet, signed beneath ''th Ballervy''? The verso is unadorned. The needle lace is of fine quality with varied and intricate fillings. A large elaborate cream silk tassel incorporating metal threads is attached. guard length 14 inches or 34.5cm. Together with a fine and substantial cream silk fan box bearing the initials ''LB on the lid exterior, and Geslin fan label within. The interior of the box is padded and quilted Provenance: Collection of Mrs Blavet, featuring a portrait of her husband. Emile Blavet was a French writer and journalist, with several novels to his credit. He contributed to many French newspapers, the Figaro perhaps being the most well-known, and was Editor in Chief at others. He married his second wife, Lucie Dupuis, a soprano, on July 4th 1888, in Paris. This may well have been her betrothal fanThe monture is sound, the gauze is strong. Some brown spotting on the lace and the gauze but not extensive. No retailer label in the box.
A Circa 1880s Bone Fan, the monture carved and pierced, perhaps in the fashion produced by the tabletiers of Meru, France, with flowers and leaves carved to the guards and a central more elaborate panel to the gorge. The double silk leaf, in cream, is mounted with a leaf in handmade Mixed Brussels lace, the major part in bobbin applique with a top border featuring needlelace; A Smaller Early 20th Century Lace Fan, of Bruges Bobbin lace, not backed, mounted on bone sticks which have been painted where flowers feature; and A Third Fan, the bone monture carved and pierced with roundels, the black gauze leaf, mounted à l'Anglaise, applied with a floral spray of Brussels bobbin lace. Guard lengths 28.5cm, 22cm and 23cm respectively (3)Mixed Brussels fan, the gorge is missing a stick. The Bruges fan appears in good general order, and the applique fan has some slight loss to the delicate piercing, with four of the gorge sticks being reinforced from the verso
