Town planning in London post the Great Fire ms letter dated July 14th 1667 sent to ‘Mr John George^ Citty Plumer at his house... London...’1p sm 4to with integral address panel. The letter says that George was to attend a meeting of ‘the Lords of the Counsell and the rest of you Brother Cittizenry...’ Attached to the letter is a copy of an order signed by Lords Clarendon^ Manchester and Ashley indicating that the business to be discussed was about a building which Antony Selby was continuing to erect in St Dunstans Hill ‘contrary to ye Act of Parlament and contrary to his Maties pleasure signified to ye Lrd Mayor and as we are informed contrary to ye command of ye Ld Mayor himself...’ and saying that they were meeting to discuss taking steps to pulling down the building unless Selby makes good account of himself. This letter was written in the wake of the Great Fire of London when tensions on building houses were running high. Following the first^ the Government passed strict laws as to the types of houses which could be built – and outlawed flammable aspects of house building^ such as thatched roofs for ever.
