The United Feature Syndicate copyright notice is affixed to the board in the first panel.Charles Schulz grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota, and fostered a love of comics throughout his childhood. He spent his later teen years studying drawing and cartoon work through a correspondence course with Art Instruction Schools. Following deployment in Europe during WWII, Schulz returned to St. Paul and got a job working as an instructor for the Art Instruction Schools. After a short lived comic strip for the St. Paul Pioneer Press, he hit it big with Peanuts in 1950, which was syndicated by United Features. The strip quickly became an enormous success, with legions of fans across the countryñand worldñfalling in love with his quirky cast of characters and charming illustrations.The present lot typifies the characteristics for which Schulzís comics were best-loved. It shows the charactersí personalities, always distinctive and lovingly mocked by Schulz. Here, Lucy, the ìcrabby face,î is at her crabby finest, and Snoopy is lively and impetuous, torturing Lucy with the dog germs she so hates. The strength of the character depictions, together with Schulzís crisp, mobile linework, makes this a wonderful example of a Peanuts daily strip and of Schulzís facility with character.Sight; height: 5 1/4 in x width: 26 1/2 in. WILLIAM KENNEDY (SCOTTISH 1859 - 1918),CATTLE WATERING BY A RIVERSIDE AT DAWNoil on canvas, signed, titled label versoimage size 50cm x 60cm, overall size 78cm x 88cm Framed. Label verso: Cyril Gerber Fine Art, Glasgow.Note: William Kennedy was born in Paisley, where he attended the Paisley School of Art. In the early 1880s he moved to Paris, where he attended the Académie Julian and studied with artists such as Jules Bastien-Lepage, William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Raphaël Collin, Gustave-Claude-Etienne Courtois, and Tony Robert-Fleury. Among the Glasgow Boys studying in Paris in the early 1880s, Kennedy's style was a synthesis of Whistler's and French and Scottish painting. William Kennedy became a prominent member of the Glasgow Boys and in 1887 he was elected President of a society formed by the group's members. Thirty-six documented examples of Kennedy's paintings are held in UK public collections including at all the major Scottish public galleries. His works now rarely appear at auction and our most recent example was lot 1504 in The Scottish Pictures Auction of 14th December 2016 when a 25.5 x 36cm oil on panel (The Glasgow International Exhibition 1901) sold for £9000 (hammer).

* JOHN MACLAUCHLAN MILNE RSA (SCOTTISH 1885 - 1957),CAFE, PARIS oil on board, signed image size 25.5cm x 34cm, overall size 46.5cm x 54.5cm Framed and under glass. Label verso: Thomas Murray & Sons, Dundee.Provenance: Private collection, Edinburgh.Note: A rare Paris painting from between 1920 and 1922 when Milne lived in the French capital. Seeing Cezanne's work for the first time was a eureka moment for Milne who until then had painted much like his father in a sedate and traditional style. He discovered a completely new freedom and walked the streets and sights of Paris painting what he saw, en plein air and with rapid, bold brush strokes. Above all, he discovered ''colour''. This very distinct Paris period saw Milne producing some of his most spontaneous and desirable work and usually on smaller scale artist boards. By 1922/3 he had moved to the French village of Lavardin and by 1924 he was in Cassis with Peploe, Cadell and Duncan Grant. Milne is often referred to as ''the fifth Scottish Colourist'' and yet his quality is at least the equal of much of the output of the other four. As well as enjoying the company of the Scottish Colourists and exhibiting alongside them, Milne shared many of their patrons. William Boyd, the Managing Director of Keiller’s marmalade firm, became one of his most important patrons. In Boyd’s home at Claremont, several works by William McTaggart, Peploe, Hunter and Milne were displayed. His collection of French paintings included Monet, Sisley, Van Gogh, Matisse, Bonnard, Vuillard and de Segonzac. Alexander Keiller, head of the marmalade firm, was another important patron. He paid Milne a stipend – so that he could spend the summers in France – in return for paintings. The collector, Matthew Justice, was a close friend of George Leslie Hunter as well as being his agent during the 1920s. Justice owned around a dozen of Milne’s paintings; his sitting-room was hung exclusively with works by Peploe and Milne and his drawing-room contained eleven Peploes, three Marchands, one Hunter and five Milne’s. The Justice collection also included works by Vuillard, de Segonzac, Moreau and Matisse. Justice was friends with William Boyd and James Tattersall, another important patron of Milne. Even though Milne's paintings were widely exhibited in his lifetime at the very best venues to great success, it's probably because he never established a long term relationship with any one gallery or dealer that his paintings have been undervalued for many years. It took until 1987 before the first Milne painting reached the £20,000 mark at auction when ''Busy Paris Street Scene with Figures (1922)'' was sold by Christie's, Glasgow (lot 664, 28th April 1987 £20,000 hammer). The John Maclauchlan Milne Estate is now represented by Tom Hewlett's Portland Gallery (London) and unsurprisingly, his profile and values have been growing. A major exhibition ''Milne And The Colourist Connection'' was staged at Portland Gallery (London) 21st September -13th October 2017. On 30th August 2017 we sold "A Paris Scene (a 35cm x 26.5cm oil on panel) for £25,000 (hammer) and in The Scottish Pictures Auction of 24th September, 2021 lot 2005 (Green Pool, Iona) sold for £29,000 (hammer).

Provenance: Compass Gallery label verso.Note 1: Undated but from the "Vine & Pit" series circa 1963.Note 2: Painter and teacher, born at Yoker, Glasgow to Irish parents. William Crozier grew up in the quiet seaside town of Troon, Ayrshire and regularly visited Ireland. He studied at The Glasgow School of Art, 1949–53. From the mid-1950s he travelled widely in Europe. He then taught at Bath Academy of Art, the Central School of Arts and Crafts and Winchester School of Art. He retired as head of fine art there in 1987 to devote all his time to painting. From 1957 Crozier had a series of solo exhibitions at Drian Galleries (London), abstracts with landscape references. He was influenced at this time by American Abstract Expressionism. His later work employed more obvious landscape references, but vibrant colour and vitality continued to be key elements. He typically painted with rapid, expressive brushstrokes, in bright, contrasting colours, often disregarding traditional rules of perspective and structure. Solo exhibitions included Arthur Tooth & Sons, London (1959, 62, 63, 64); Drian Galleries, London (1958, 60, 61, 62, 65, 68, 70); The Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh and London (1985, 89, 90); Compass Gallery, Glasgow (1969, 75); Richard Demarco Gallery, Edinburgh (1968, 83), Madeleine Gallery, Paris (1960); National Museum, Gdansk (1990); Taylor Galleries, Dublin (1991); and career retrospectives at the Royal Hibernian Academy’s Gallagher Gallery and the Crawford Municipal Gallery in Cork (1990). The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art gave him an important show in 1995, with another at Fenton Gallery, Cork, Ireland, 2002. In the 1980s he started living part-time in West Cork. He celebrated his 80th year with a large exhibition of his current work at the Flowers Gallery (London) while a concurrent exhibition of his paintings of the 1950s and 60s at the Pyms Gallery, also in London, triggered a reappraisal of his early painting. Acquisitions of his work by the Tate Gallery and the National Gallery of Ireland quickly followed. William Crozier's work is held in public collections in Ireland, the UK, around Europe and in the US.

School of ALBERTO DURERO (Nuremberg, 1471-1528), 16th century."Christ in Limbo, 1510.Oil on panel.It shows faults and damage to the paint layer.A pigment study has been carried out which confirms the period of the panel.Dated in the upper left corner.Measurements: 104 x 74.5 cm.This is an important painting from the Renaissance period on panel, whose scene is inspired by one of the burin engravings that formed part of Dürer's so-called "Little Passion" (1512) (to distinguish it from the "Great Passion", another series that the German master produced a year earlier, in 1511, on the Death and Passion of Christ). The print in question shows Christ in Limbo, surrounded by demons and Adam and Eve, whom he has come to rescue. Jesus carries the banner of Victory and bends his body to save other inhabitants of that intermediate realm. Several hellish creatures surround them. The passage is recorded in the Apocryphal Gospels, specifically in the Gospel of Nicodemus, which narrates the Resurrection of Christ. In the present painting, which is of excellent quality, the elongated canons of Adam and Eve are derived from the Dürerian ideal of beauty, characterised by long, moulded muscles, supple torsos and long necks. Subtle shades of tanning turn the contours, here we can see the fusion of the Durerian school with the Florentine tradition of the time, derived from Leonardo and his technique of sfumato. Adam's aged face, with its long, kinky, cottony beard, contrasts with the soft flesh tones of Eve. The gallery of characters stands out: the variety of expressions and human types, some of them resolved with bold strokes, and others with soft and tender features (such as Jesus and Eve). Drawing and colour dialogue with success. Compared to the original print, subtle changes can be seen in its transfer to this magnificent canvas. If we compare this painting with the engraving, we see here a demon depicted with singular imagination and expressive resources that did not appear in the engraving, where other demons lurk from the top of the arch, their diabolical heads poking out of the lower part. It seems likely, moreover, that the present painter based his work on the print of the same name from the other series by Dürer (the Great Passion), which shows a figure (probably Saint Jerome) holding a cross. Here, too, the detail of the cross has been introduced, held by two figures looking at each other, hopeful and aged, perhaps Saint Jerome and The Baptist. It is evident that the artist who painted this oil painting was thoroughly familiar with the cycles of The Passion painted by Dürer in various versions. The engravings by the German master were works in their own right, but they also played a very important role in teaching and disseminating his work. His prints were a source of inspiration throughout Europe, especially in Italy and Spain.

Flemish school of the 16th century."Virgin of the Milk".Oil on panel.It has a grid in allusion to San Lorenzo de El Escorial.Measurements: 49 x 38.5 cm; 67 x 55.5 cm (frame).In this panel the painter offers us a tender and intimate image of the Virgin and Child, within the iconography of the Virgin of the Milk, which has a long tradition in the history of art. Although this theme began to disappear in the Baroque period, it is fully in keeping with the interest of the artists of the time in depicting Jesus in his most human aspect, as well as the Virgin. Here even all allusion to the future sacrifice, which often appears with the presence of fruit or red flowers, disappears. The piece is notable for the modesty of its representation: the Virgin's breast is not visible, but is covered by the pink cloak.

The author's first novel and the first to feature the character James Bond, according to the Cape archives, '4,760 sets of sheets of the first printing were delivered, but only 4,728 copies were bound up, many of these went to public libraries and we believe that less than half of the first printing was sold to the public'.
