A 15th century silver gilt iconographic ring, the hoop with flat inner section, the moulded ridge above centred with a rectangular concave panel between two transverse ridges, incised with a crowned female figure, possibly St. Margaret of Antioch, holding a cross in her right hand, her left hand held against her chest, between incised upright foliate detail, the foliage extending down the shoulders to either side of a central ridge of pellets continuing around the shank, shank misshapen, diameter 22mm. £300-£500 --- Provenance: This ring was discovered by a metal detectorist in 2014. It has been recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database (Ref. ESS-0544C7) and disclaimed as Treasure (Ref. 2014T585). St. Margaret of Antioch was the patron saint of childbirth and pregnant women. She is honoured with a Feast Day on 20 July. Condition Report The ring is slightly misshapen with several cracks visible to the shank - one lateral crack across the hoop and damage to the edge of one shoulder. but the detailing is sharp. The gilding is largely in tact. Dimensions: Bezel: width: 10.5mm, thickness: 2.01mm. Shoulders: thickness: 2.3mm. Hoop: thickness: 1.9mm. Gross weight 4.8gm.

A Chinese jade butterfly brooch, the carved wings and abdomen mounted in a textured gold setting with beaded border, the reverse with impressed artist seals / signature, (jade untested), width 38mm. £300-£500 --- According to a PMI test on an XRF Analyzer, the brooch is testing as 18ct gold. Condition Report One jade panel has a prominent crack and both show several other hairline fractures; a deep green hue with some mottling and general surface wear. The mount shows general surface wear. One antenna has been repaired and the brooch fitting replaced. Jade is untested for treatment or enhancement. Gross weight 10.7gm.

Dame Ethel Walker, British 1861-1951 - Portrait of a Lady in front of a piano (with 'Donkeys on the Beach in Robin Hood's Bay' on the reverse); oil on panel, 33.3 x 24.7 cm Provenance: Christie's, London, 20th Century British Art, 30th June 2005, lot 52; private collection, purchased from the above Note: this is classic example of Walker's style, with its subtle gradations of chalky paint and quiet, almost breathless atmosphere. The intimate handling of the scene and the gentle contrast between fluid paint and bare contract are reminiscent of French artists such as Edouard Vuillard. Other works on this theme are in public collections including the Government Art Collection, Manchester Art Gallery and The Courtauld, London. The artist exhibited widely in the UK during her lifetime and was the subject of a major retrospective at the Tate in 1951, alongside her contemporaries Gwen John and Frances Hodgkins and organised by John Rothenstein. More recently, her work was central to Tate Britain's 'Queer British Art 1861-1967' in 2017. She will be the subject of a Spotlight exhibition at Tate Britain later in 2023.
John Luke RUA, Irish 1906-1975 - Carnival, 1930; oil on panel, signed lower right 'John Luke', 57.5 x 83 cm (ARR) Note:Luke painted two versions of Carnival. He was known to make two versions of some paintings (see Shaw's Bridge (1936 and 1939) and The Road to the West (1939 and 1944)). A version of this work was included in major exhibitions of Luke, including the Ulster Museum 1978 & 2012. It was sold recently in 2022 at Sotheby's, London for £25,200 (including buyer's premium).A work under the title of Carnival was exhibited at the Leger Galleries, London in October 1930, and while it has been thought it was the aforementioned work, it is possible it is the present lot, as it is in keeping with his work at the Slade School of Art around 1930. He won the Dunville Scholarship in 1927 to study at the Slade under Henry Tonks. Of the work exhibited in 1930, the art critic P.G. Konody (Daily Mail 3rd October 1930) described it as "one of the most attractive features of the exhibition". The subject is unusual for Luke so it may have been produced for a specific Slade competition. The glow of the carnival lights in the background demonstrates his technical skills as a young artist. Alfred Wolmark, British/Polish 1877-1961 - North End, Old Hampstead; oil on panel, signed, tiled and inscribed on a sheet of paper attached to the reverse 'Alfred A Wolmark Old Hampstead (destroyed in 1940)', 36.2 x 26.2 cm (ARR) Provenance: Christie's, March 1985 (according to the label attached to the reverse); Louise Kosman, Edinburgh; private collection Note: Wolmark was famed for his bold colour palette, influenced by French Modernism, and in an early exhibition in the 1910s at the International Society of Artists, his work was placed beside Vincent Van Gogh, as the only artist of comparable intensity. Wolmark exhibited at the influential 'Manet and the Post-Impressionists' exhibition at the Grafton Gallery in 1910, organised by Roger Fry. Wolmark has been referred to as the 'father' of the Whitechapel Boys. He was the only artist to be included in both the Whitechapel Art Gallery's 1906 'Jewish Art and Antiquities Exhibition' and in David Bomberg and Jacob Epstein's 'Jewish Section' at the 1914 exhibition 'Twentieth-Century Art: A Review of Modern Movements'.
