Condition ReportThe two larger rubies are likely to be replacements. There is some glue residue on the main pearls, but it could be from the round cut rubies, which seem to be glued to the setting.

Major Pierce Thomas Chute served in the Burmese Expedition of 1885-89, Indian Medal two clasps, Major in 1896, 1899-1902 he served in the Boer War, Nilge River, Transvaal, Rhenoster Kop, Orange River, Bethlehem, Wittebergen, Cape Colony, QSA two bars, KSA two bars, Mentioned in Despatches 1901, and DSO in 1901 in recognition of his services during operations in South Africa and went on to serve in the First World War as Lieutenant Colonel.

It has been suggested that the initials may stand for the Royal Westmorland Militia.
33cm fullered blade with faceted back edge, etched with scrolling foliage, thistles, battle honours, HIGHLANDERS, 74th, regimental badge, ASSAYE with Elephant battle honour, maker's panel for JOHNSON & FOLKARD, owner's initials JOT and a crowned VR cypher, regulation gilt hilt, the lower mount decorated with the regimental badge to either side and flanked by thistles, the pommel decorated with thistles and a band of acanthus scrolls, faceted stone, carved basket weave wooden grip set with yellow metal studs, in its gilt mounted leather wrapped wooden scabbard, the mounts decorated with thistles, St Andrew, 74 and ASSAYE battle honour, complete with matching companion fork. The initials are those of Major James Otway Toler, Ensign 1867 rising to Major in 1894. Sold with a small quantity of research and a copy photograph. Bi-knife lacking.

The midmount of the dirk incised W to the reverse.
