A suite of oak Aesthetic movement bedroom furniture, third quarter 19th century, Collier & Pluncknett, Warwick & Leamington, with painted and gilt panels throughout, comprising; a breakfront wardrobe, 245cm high, 191cm wide, 60cm deep, a breakfront compactum wardrobe, 245cm high, 191cm wide, 60cm deep, a washstand, with Japonisme tiles above the variegated grey marble top, 123cm high, 135cm wide, 69cm deep, a writing table, with glazed superstructure, 148cm high, 133cm wide, 60cm deep, a half-tester bed frame, with heraldic lions to the footboard, 253cm high, 206cm long 161cm wide, and an overmantel or wall mount, 140cm high, 175cm wide, 25cm protuberance, some elements with maker's labelProvenance: Berwick House, Shropshire James Plucknett was originally in partnership with Frederick Collier with showroom in Leamington Spa and workshops in Warwick. The firm advertised in various trade directories between 1872-1880 and gained many commissions from well healed local families as well as from further afield. They advertises themselves as '...Manufacturers of rich carved furniture in the peculiar styles characteristic of the Gothic, Tudor and Elizabethan ages' Perhaps Collier and Plucknett's best known commission was for Tyntesfield, the celebrated Victorian Mansion, which was re-modelled for William Gibbs (1790-1875). Collier and Plucknett supplied much of the Gothic revival furniture to Tyntesfield. Today Tyntesfield is owned by the national trust and as well as examples of furniture visitors can also view the fully fitted Collier and Plucknett bathroom of Matilda Blanche Gibbs. A Regency mahogany library bookcase, circa 1815, of breakfront outline, the moulded cornice above glazed bookcase doors, the base with arrangement of cupboard doors, 236cm high, 251cm wide, 56cm deepProvenance: Berwick House, ShropshireCondition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Old splits and chips. Section of moulding to one side of the cornice is an ebonised old replacement. Some opening of the joints at the edges of the panel to the doors of the lower sections. Some fading and variation in the colour of the timber between different sections of the bookcase. The sides are darker and have a more 'dry' surface than the front of the bookcase. This is likely from where the piece was placed in a room and the sunlight has caught different areas. The flame mahogany used in the bookcase is of impressive quality. One key present and operates lock to central lower doors. No key present for other locks. All are open except for the central upper doors where the lock is seized in the closed position. The central upper doors can still be opened and closed though. Some of the doors catch slightly on the hinges of the adjacent doors when opening. Two of the upper glazed doors with a panel of replacement glass each (old glass has been used). Some screws lacking to the hinges and various later screws are securing hinges. Escutcheon and lock plate to one side lower door is lacking. Some minor wood worm to underside and back. Very slight gap between the two pairs of central doors when closed (not flush). The bookcase disassembles into nine pieces; cornice, three glazed sections, three lower section, the 'waist', and the plinth base. Condition Report Disclaimer
