JIM SULLIVAN | WALES RUGBY LEAGUE 1930s An exceptionally rare 1930s Wales Rugby League jersey match-worn by record breaking – and code breaking, Jim Sullivan (1903-1977). The jersey in traditional red body with white collar. Bears a red shield crest stitched to chest having embroidered three feathers. Label to collar for ‘Fast Dye Guaranteed’. Black number 1 to white panel stitched to the back. This example is still caked with the mud of an evidently wet pitch 90 years ago! Provenance: purchased by vendor from an UK auction of Jim Sullivan items, in 2008 Some rugby historians have credited Jim Sullivan as being the greatest rugby player to be born in Cardiff. Born in Splott on December 2nd 1903, Jim’s father was a butcher from Ireland. Jim went to St Alban’s School and played rugby union for Cardiff at 16. At 16 years 10 months, Sullivan had played for the Cardiff first team and went on to make 35 appearances. He was a powerfully built full-back who doubtless was schooled in hard knocks around the streets of Splott. At 17 years four months he became the youngest ever play to represent the Barbarians RFC. At this time he was apprenticing as a boiler maker.Sullivan also represented Wales in Baseball and was said to be able to club balls out of the local parks in true American style. Because of lack of employment, six months before he turned 18, Sullivan signed a 12-year contract with Wigan Rugby League in the north-West of England, for a record equalling fee of £750 in June, 1921. If Sullivan had remained an amateur ‘…he would most probably have become Cardiff’s greatest of all full-backs’, according to the late Danny Davies, historian at Cardiff RFC, He joined Wigan and won the first of his then Welsh record 26 rugby league caps eight days after his 18th birthday. His final appearance came at 36 and he led his country 18 times. Sullivan won four Rugby League Championship finals, the Challenge Cup twice and the Lancashire Cup three times. He played 25 Tests for Great Britain, three for England and six for Other Nationalities. In his 60 international appearances he scored 329 points. He coached Wigan between 1946 and 1952, guiding them to two Challenge Cup wins at Wembley, six successive Lancashire Cups and three Northern League Championship finals. He switched to St Helens at the start of the 1952-53 season and immediately steered them to the League Championship title in 1953 and to their first Wembley triumph a year later. He has been appointed to the Rugby League, Wigan and St Helens Halls of Fame and is included on the Welsh Sports Hall of Fame ‘Roll of Honour’. The sheer size of the numbers involved in the rugby league career of Jim Sullivan still amaze. By the time he hung up his boots after 922 first-class games on 23 February 1946, he had scored 6,001 points. He played for Wigan for 20 years in 774 matches, scoring 4,883 points.
