Anglo-Saxon Bronze Strap End with Interlaced Panel 7th-9th century AD. A robust one-piece strap end split along the upper edge of the plate; two slight flared lobes below the piercings for the attachment rivets; central panel ornamented with a length of tight interlaced knotwork and a zoomorphic terminal with triangular ears, bulbous eyes and a ribbed square snout. 8.47 grams, 38mm (1 1/2"). Indian Deccani Silver-Gilt 'Hand of Fatima' Staff Finial 19th century AD. An alam in the form of the hamsa or 'hand of Fatima' with supporting bands, dragon-head terminals; the front with repoussé detail and foliage, the four fingers with verses from the Qr'an (1, 112, 113, 114); to the palm a central roundel with the Nada 'Ali quatrain and twelve surrounding roundels with the names of the twelve Shia imams; beneath the fingers, an invocation of Fatima al-Zahra, to the thumb, an invocation of the prophet; leaf-shaped panel to the base attached to the tubular socket. 2.3 kg, 59cm (23 1/4"). Acquired on the London art market before 1995. See Christie's, sale 4204, 12-13 October 2006, lot 454 (realised £3120 hammer price) for a very similar, slightly less ornate example, possibly from the same workshop; with a printout of the Christie's piece. He served as Chief Justice of the Turks and Caicos Islands from 1998 to 2004, and then as Chief Justice of Bermuda until his retirement in 2012. Highly regarded in legal circles for his decisiveness and impeccable integrity, he was awarded the OBE in 1991 in recognition of his services to the Cayman Islands, and was made a Knight Bachelor in 2012 for services to justice in Bermuda. He had a passion for the natural world and worked alongside his wife, fellow lawyer Lady Ground, to found the National Trust for the Cayman Islands, as well as publishing several volumes of wildlife photography. Roman Silver P-Shaped Brooch 2nd-3rd century AD. A delicate bow brooch comprising a round-section arm with knop finials, tightly-wound spring and chord, round-section pin; the arm passing through a pierced lug at the top of the D-section bow with chamfered panel below, returned foot and catchplate, extension wrapped around the lower bow. 8.75 grams, 46mm (1 3/4"). A domed discoid pendant with thick suspension loop, granulated borders and granule above; rosette to the junction with the dome, with cabochon garnet insert; central quatrefoil panel with cabochon garnet, granule detailing; band of granules with four cabochon garnets to the quarters, band of arched fillets and pellets, billetted border, with granule cluster below. 9.3 grams, 46mm (1 3/4"). Viking Silver Contorted Beast Pendant 10th-11th century AD. A Smolensk-type concave-section pendant with integral suspension loop; the openwork plaque with three-band border and four florid panels, internal stylised zoomorph with hatched panel to the hip, gripping hands to the body and border, facing mask below the loop with pellet eyes. 8.49 grams, 37mm (1 1/2"). From an old Munich collection; acquired on the German art market before 2000. Cf. Korshyn, V.E. Yazicheskiye Priveski Drevniye Rysi X-XIV Vekov, Moscow, 2013, items K.1.02 - 04. There is a class of discoid pendants with banded borders and contorted figures found in the hinterland of the Baltic region, associated with the influence of Scandinavian settlers. The design of these items recalls specific elements of Scandinavian art - for example, the 'gripping hands' motif is a feature of the Oseberg Style named after the famous Norwegian ship-burial. Oseberg Style is associated with the beginnings of the Viking age, and was current in the 9th century when Scandinavian settlers began to establish centres of trade and political control in the area of the rivers Dnieper and Volga. The motif has been interpreted as a horse and linked with various legends and mythic figures. Very fine condition; some usage wear.

A matched pair of earrings in the form of amphorae, each a thick wire loop with textured discoid panel, two wire junctions connecting to the handles of the amphora; each amphora with ribbed neck, carnelian bead to the shoulders and conical body with pellet detailing and knop finial. 30 grams total, 80 - 82mm (3 1/4"). A cast bar with pierced lugs to the lower edges, D-shaped central panel pierced vertically, inlaid niello 'W' to one face, 'A' to the reverse; incised text along the bar '(A)VE MARIA G(R)ACIA PLE(NA) and to the reverse A DOMINU(S) TECUM (Hail Mary full of grace / Lord (be) with thee'); both tips lost in antiquity. 54 grams, 11.5cm (4 1/2").
