Cecily Brown b.1969- Untitled, 1993; oil and enamel on metal panel, 183x56.5cm., (unframed). Provenance: Purchased by her tutor, the artist Ron Bowen at her final year degree show at The Slade School of Fine Art, London. Ron Bowen recalls: 'Cecily's final exhibition at the S lade was both like and singularly unlike any of the work she had previously made. All the works were on metal (the leftovers, I believe, from some sculpture that Bruce McLean was working on at the time), relatively narrow and in landscape format, painted in a mixture of oils and enamel. The long horizontals suggested a sort of 'moving through' as if one were in a slowly moving limousine. Taken together they conjured up a certain kind of ominous urban landscape. Attack dogs, guns, sexy pigtailed girls, guys, hangin', cars drifting by, all drawn or painted, in slightly cartoonish attitude, with a sort of loose decorativeness. The paint attack was extraordinary assured, the world evoked, entirely convincing, at the same time incredibly casual and highly charged. I thought they were simply terrific'. 'I think the painting on metal certainly came from Bruce McLean. The imagery, including the attack dogs and the distortion perhaps from Jock McFadyen - she was talking a lot to him then - I'm not sure about my own input, but I was collecting up images in similar fashion from various sources then, talked with her about this collagist approach, and lent her quite a few images from my collection'.
