A Spanish Damascened Steel Casket, by Placido Zuloaga, circa 1880, of domed rectangular form with twin loop handles, decorated with arabesque, foliage and scrollwork within strapwork panels, on bun feet, engraved PZ monogram, 19cm wide See illustration Zuloaga (1834-1910) was a leading exponent of the damascening technique in Spain during the second half of the 19th century, when old techniques and styles of metalwork were being reinterpreted by specialist craftsmen of the day. A Brass Four Glass Striking Mantel Clock, circa 1890, urn shaped finial, bevelled glass panels, scroll and floral corner mounts, hoof shaped feet, 3-3/4-inch enamel dial with Roman and Arabic numeral chapter ring, recessed centre with a visible Brocot escapement, twin barrel movement with striking on a gong, twin tube mercury pendulum, 43cm high see illustration 22.02.17, Brass surfaces a discoloured throughout, back door glass panel with one small chip to the bottom corner, dial with a chip and has been restored next to the strike side winding hole, movement is dirty and needs cleaning, both spring barrels are fully wound, strike is working correctly, pendulum is discoloured and the mercury tubes are discoloured.

Richard Weatherill (fl.1870-1900) Sylvan in Whitby Harbour Signed, oil on panel, 22.5cm by 37cm See illustration The Sylvan was built in Hobkirk in 1857. Her owner was Smales Bros. and was registered in Whitby in February 1858. Sold in June 1881 to Isaac Whitfield of Sunderland. Sailed from the Tyne on 25th Jan. 1883 and became a missing ship.

From a historic ‘Victorian Museum’ collection; from the stock of Gregory, Bottley & Lloyd (1981-2014); formerly with Gregory, Bottley & Co. (1932-1981) and previously with J. R. Gregory & Co. (1898-1932); originally in the collection of the famous James Reynolds Gregory (1858-1898"). A beautiful marble urn inscribed for Marcus Antonius Gemellus1st – 2nd century AD; alt. cm 48; A white marble cinerary urn, with a lid and rich decoration executed in high relief. Two eagles and two griffins are depicted on the lid of the urn, which is pediment-shaped. Between the griffins is a tripod with leonine paws and upon which sits a fluted cauldron. On the front of the urn is a panel with an inscription, from Marco Antonio Proculo, in memory of his deceased father, Marco Antonio Gemella, whose ashes are within:Diis / Manibus / M(arci) Antoni / Gemelli / M(arcus) Antonius / Proculus filius / patri bene / merenti.On either side of the panel are pairs of eagles and sphinxes, the centre of the lower register meanwhile is adorned with a shell, between two dolphins and two candle holders which sit in each corner. The shape of the urn and its cover, the decoration and paleographic characteristics would suggest that it dates from between the end of the 1st and first half of the 2nd century AD.PROVENANCE:Ex ACR Auctions 17 (London, 30 June 2015), lot 67; formerly in an European collection formed in the 1980s.
